The Los Angeles Police Department has confirmed that Melyda Corado, 27, who was killed in a shootout in Los Angeles, was shot by police return fire. The standoff occurred on Saturday at a Trader Joe’s store where Corado was an employee. Suspect Gene Atkins held those inside the store hostage after shooting his 76-year-old grandmother and kidnapping a 17-year-old female. Corado was shot exiting the building. ___ “I know that it’s every officer’s worst nightmare to hurt an innocent bystander during a violent engagement. I spoke with the officers this morning — they’re devastated. They were devastated in the immediate aftermath of this event,” said Chief Michael Moore in a press conference Tuesday.
