TO BE KILLED – 6/20/2019
If Pablo is terrified at the shelter, just read his notes. This poor boy was surrendered as a stray, but apparently he was not taken off the street, but out of the home of the person who he had been living with for (and these are mixed notes!) either 2 months or 2 years. He must have been doing something right! Now Pablo has been dumped by the person he trusted most in the world, and they didn’t even bother to leave any notes that would tell us about his wonderful qualities, or what his favorite toy is, or what his favorite activity is. They simply walked away. How is Pablo to shine on a list with 13 other dogs? How is he to speak to us so he can say “I am a good dog, I am a sweet boy, please give me a chance?” He can’t. So we have to do it for him. Please share Pablo far and wide for a home. Or if you are an experienced foster or adopter in an adult only home who can give him shelter, hurry and message our page or email us at MustLoveDogsNYC@gmail.com for assistance fostering or adopting this adorable boy with his curious eyes, loving heart, and cutest ear set on earth.
PABLO, ID# 65156, 3 Yrs. Old, 63.6 lbs, Unaltered Male
Manhattan ACC, Large Mixed Breed, Gray / White
I came to the shelter as a Stray, 6/11/2019
Shelter Assessment Rating: New Hope Rescue Only
AT RISK NOTE: Pablo has displayed distance increasing behaviors at the care center and has remained fearful, not allowing for handling. Pablo would be best suited for placement with a new hope partner that can provide the necessary behavior modification. Medically, Pablo seems healthy.
SHELTER ASSESSMENT - Date of assessment: 6/15/2019
Summary:: Staff members have not been able to safely handle Pablo since he arrived at the care center. He was lunging, barking, and growling when he first arrived and when approached in his kennel, he begins lunging and barking at the handlers. Therefore, he is not a safe candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Pablo so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to the level of defensive aggression Pablo has displayed at the care center around staff and handlers, we recommend an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Pablo has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression, Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Pablo has been very uncomfortable at the care center and has shown a high potential for defensive aggression. He has not allowed handling by staff and lunges and barks at handlers when they approach his kennel or attempt to handle him. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Bite history (dog): The previous owners report that Pablo bit the other small dog in the home about 2 years ago. This bite resulted in the removal of one of the small dog's eyeballs. Please see handout on Bite history.

*** NEW NYC ACC RATING SYSTEM ***
Dogs with Level 1 determinations are suitable for the majority of homes. These dogs are not displaying concerning behaviors in shelter, and the owner surrender profile (where available) is positive.
Dogs with Level 2 determinations will be suitable for adopters with some previous dog experience. They will have displayed behavior in the shelter (or have owner reported behavior) that requires some training, or is simply not suitable for an adopter with minimal experience.
Dogs with Level 3 determinations will need to go to homes with experienced adopters, and the ACC strongly suggest that the adopter have prior experience with the challenges described and/or an understanding of the challenge and how to manage it safely in a home environment.
