TO BE KILLED - June 8, 2019
"I WILL TAKE MY LAST STEPS SOON IF NO ONE WILL GIVE ME A LOVING HOME" :'( People who surrender their pets to shelters seem to think life is sweet and that abandoned pet will find a happy new home but that's not always the case. A lot of highly adoptable dogs never make it out alive and we don't want Vincenza to be one of those statistics. She's a beautiful three year old girl with a winning smile and an endearing head tilt. Upon arrival, Vincenza was terrified, and who or what wouldn't be in a strange and scary place? Dogs are resilient though. We all know that. And Vincenza is warming up and making friends but she needs something more consistent - a kind and caring new owner and a safe and secure home - before it's too late. Vincenza is out of time at the Manhattan shelter and badly in need of lots of attention and shares. Please help us get her story out there so she can find her happy ever after before it's too late.

Date of initial:: 5/27/2019
Summary:: Tucked tail, quiet, sedated for exam
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Vincenza so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children: When first arriving to the care center, Vincenza was very fearful. She allowed only minimal handling and bit a staff member on the hand when he was trying to take her out of the police car. This bite resulted in broken skin and a puncture. Even though she has warmed up to handlers at the care center, this shows that she has the potential for defensive aggression when she feels uncomfortable. For these reasons, we recommend an adult-only home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human)
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: When first arriving to the care center, Vincenza was very fearful. She allowed only minimal handling and bit a staff member on the hand when he was trying to get her out of the police car, which shows a potential for defensive aggression when she feels uncomfortable. She will need a slow approach in order to acclimate to her new environment. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.
Bite history (human): Vincenza bit a staff member on the hand when he was trying to get her out of the police car. The bite resulted in broken skin and one puncture. Please see handout on Bite history.

* NEW NYC ACC RATING SYSTEM *
Dogs with Level 1 determinations are suitable for the majority of homes. These dogs are not displaying concerning behaviors in shelter, and the owner surrender profile (where available) is positive.
Dogs with Level 2 determinations will be suitable for adopters with some previous dog experience. They will have displayed behavior in the shelter (or have owner reported behavior) that requires some training, or is simply not suitable for an adopter with minimal experience.
Dogs with Level 3 determinations will need to go to homes with experienced adopters, and the ACC strongly suggest that the adopter have prior experience with the challenges described and/or an understanding of the challenge and how to manage it safely in a home environment. In many cases, a trainer will be needed to manage and work on the behaviors safely in a home environment.
PLEASE ADOPT. DON'T SHOP. FOSTERS ROCK TOO. :)
