"American Fascism will get nowhere without a dictator. Somewhere he exists; somewhere in the murky valleys of politics lurks the American Hitler. Soon or late, he will appear. Let us pray that when he comes, he will have the mark of the beast set on his brow, so we shall know him."
- Philip Dunne, 1936
I want to be very clear, I was raised to be racist. Among the white Kentuckians I grew up around, you hear, 'I don't have a racist bone in my body.' Yeah sure, because it's in your marrow pal. A lot of caucasians learn from their church that all you have to do is go confess your sins in church and all is forgiven. With racism, a caucasian can use racist epithets and that's not even considered a sin in any church in the land. I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone use those epithets and in the next breath they'll say, 'I'm not racist.'
I was on a grand jury once in 1988. I grew up in the whitest suburb you can imagine in the richest county in Kentucky. This one bill of indictment we had was a black man who was accused of shoplifting a car stereo from Walmart. The prosecutor made his case and stepped out as we decided whether to indict him or not. The vote was eleven to one so he was indicted. Afterwards one of the jurors said, 'these savages just can't exist in a civil society.'
****THAT'S NOT RACIST!!!****
Because anyone can be a savage right? These are the kinds of pedantic word play that racists have used since it has become taboo to use the N-word anymore but everyone knew what he meant and they all voted accordingly. In the jury room is where you will find all those 'I'm not racist' types being as racist as they can be and if you aren't sure about this verifiable *fact*, you can head to the nearest reformatory and let your lying eyes see the truth.
Five years ago, we all watched in horror as a NYC police officer choked Eric Garner to death using an illegal choke-hold to suffocate him for selling loose cigarettes. Afterwards there was a lot of support the police banter from one side of the aisle. You know the breed, they like to call themselves 'pro-life' except when it's a white police officer summarily executing a black man with many other white police officers looking on without stopping their fellow cop from taking a life. That cop murdered him.
Today was the deadline to file charges against that murderer ended today with Bill Barr refusing to charge that murderer. Literally nobody is surprised by that decision. Our black brothers and sisters have gotten the message loud and clear for centuries now; black lives do not matter.
No white person can absolve themselves of the crime of racism by simply declaring they are not racists. It feels good to feel that you are better than some people especially when in your heart you know you are not better. What caucasians need to understand is that racism hurts all of us. I've heard all the racist tropes about 'welfare queens' driving Cadillacs but those same people don't think about how our racist drug war has decimated black families for half a century now. You will hear them now complaining about the opioid holocaust we are experiencing now because now they are becoming aware that this is not problem that can be solved by law enforcement, it can only be dealt with as a health problem.
Does this mean people are going to start voting to end this evil drug war? Of course not, because the people afflicted with the disease of racism cannot see that it harms all of us. We tell people of color every single day that they are more valuable to us as a society as prisoners than they are students because we will spend $795 a day to lock them up but won't spend a nickel to send them to college. We'll call a black woman a 'welfare queen' and ignore the fact that we put her husband in prison for smoking cannabis.
But worst of all, half this country will stare at children of color and say, 'the President isn't a racists' after he recites racists tropes said verbatim in Klan rallies since its inception. Anyone who isn't happy with this president should 'go back to where they came from' but of course they don't think when they called president Obama every name in the book *they* should leave because this is hypocritical racist dogma at its putrid worst.
Now the racist-in-chief has appointed himself the arbiter of who and who does not love this country. Of course this means anyone who does not agree with him hates their country. The danger of this despicable rhetoric cannot be overstated. This is how wars get started, civil wars. The cowardice of the Republican party is now absolute. Congressional Republicans are so afraid of Trump that they would not dare speak the very obvious truth that Trump is a racist. They are the party of white privilege and white people so naturally they are not going to step out of line and say aloud what we all know is true.
Republicans are now watching Trump murder the ideals that this country was founded upon and that is something they must never be forgiven for. We must make them wear the mark of the beast like the scarlet letter, they are murdering the American dream before our eye and we must make a stand against these complicit traitors. This far, no farther.
