Reik, a retired Secret Service dog, may well hold a record for the longest-lived dog from the agency. His handler, who escaped Cambodia during the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, says Reik has made it this far in decent shape in great part because Reik's diet is and has always been homemade Cambodian food. (I ate at Reik's house once and I can attest to how good he has it!) In addition, he kept Reik "in the game" after the dog's retirement, occasionally hiding a little black powder for him to sniff out -- just like the good old days of detecting explosives while protecting the president.
Happy birthday, sweet boy!
