The story last season was injuries. They signed RB Jerick McKinnion in the off-season and lost him to an ACL tear. Matt Brieda stepped up and played well but it seemed like every game he was “carted off the field” only to come back the next quarter. They also lost QB Jimmy Garoppolo to an ACL tear. CJ Beathard was in-effective and Nick Mullens had moments but just wasn’t enough. Pierre Garcon couldn’t stay on the field and neither could Marquise Goodwin. This opened the door for WR Donte Pettis to get an opportunity and he shined.
They brought in RB Tevin Coleman to compete with Jerick McKinnon for the top RB spot but RB has become a 4 headed monster with Coleman, McKinnon, Brieda and Mostert. The only WR Free Agent signing was Jordan Matthews, so WR will need to be addressed in the draft.
With one of the worst defenses last year, they attacked that need in the off-season. They signed LB Kwon Alexander, and traded for Edge Dee Ford. They signed CB Jason Verrett and DB Jimmy Ward. If they can draft Nick Bosa opposite Dee Ford that front D-line will be one of the best.
This team has potential, especially if they can draft another WR. They have to stay healthy and even though the Los Angeles Rams are the team to beat in the West, the 49ers could easily surpass the Seahawks and become a Wild Card contender.
