Hello, my name is Buddy.
My animal id is #44316.
I am a neutered Chihuahua at the Manhattan Animal Care Center.
The shelter thinks I am about 6 years old.
I only weigh 16 lbs.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 13-Oct-2018.
To FOSTER or ADOPT scared little Buddy, SPEAK UP NOW & Save a Life, APPLY with rescues OR message Must Love Dogs - Saving NYC Dogs IMMEDIATELY!!!!
The general rule is to foster you have to be within 4 hours of the NYC ACC approved New Hope partner rescues you are applying with and to adopt you will have to be in the general NE US area; NY, NJ, CT, PA, DC, MD, DE, NH, RI, MA, VT & ME (some rescues will transport to VA). ✔Pledge✔Tag✔Share✔Foster✔Adopt✔Save a life! Thank you for caring!
"Rescue only" means a foster or adopter must live within the Northeastern states and must apply to rescues already approved to pull from NYC ACC shelters. Rescues can't do anything without APPLICATIONS! If your application is approved, rescue will arrange transport.
When approached, Buddy got scared and began to bark and hide under the chairs.
Coordinator was able to take the leash and leash him up.
While trying to remove his harness, Buddy began to show teeth and tense.
Coordinator was able to remove the harness slowly.
In shelter behavior:
When an attempt to remove Buddy from his cage is made, he runs to the back trembling, scared, and will not come out.
Out of concern for his stress levels, he is not a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
At the care center, he displays a medium level of activity.
Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner. Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Buddy is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Buddy as not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only some handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Buddy is very fearful at the care center and has snapped at handlers. It is important to always go slow and give Buddy the option to walk away from any social interaction. Buddy should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Buddy’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Buddy would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
