Summary:: Due to Oreo's overall fearful behavior displayed in the care, he is not an appropriate candidate for an assessment at this time.
Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to all the concerns reported in his previous home environment, we believe Oreo would be best set up to succeed in an adult only home.We recommend allowing Oreo to have a period of decompression so that he can acclimate to his new home environment so that his behavior can be more thoroughly assessed before placement into a permanent home. Guidance from a professional trainer or behaviorist is highly advised. Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity, risk of future aggression. Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Oreo escalates quickly to snapping, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Oreo needs careful behavior modification and management. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Oreo as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. He is also reported to growl and snap when restrained or brushed. It is important to avoid to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Oreo to be more comfortable with this.
