Her name is Sandra Pascoe Ortez. The material she has produced mimics many of the useful properties of plastic. It biodegrades in about a month in soil, but only takes a week to biodegrade in water. It’s also nontoxic and technically edible, so it isn’t dangerous to wildlife.
Sandra Ortez is currently researching which species of nopal cactus is most efficient to make the material from. You can learn more about her work in this video from the BBC series People Fixing the World.
