U.S. Drops “Mother of All Bombs” in Afghanistan – blogged by @MsJennyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Around 7 p.m. local time, the United States military dropped a GBU-43-B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb, otherwise known as MOAB “the mother of all bombs,” in Afghanistan. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The MOAB is the country’s largest and most powerful non-nuclear bomb, weighing in at 21,600 pounds with a radius blast of over 300 meters. The bomb was tested 14 years ago, however, it had never been used in combat before Thursday. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to CNN, the military’s intent was to target ISIS tunnel complex in the Achin district of the Nangarhar province. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “As [ISIS’] losses have mounted, they are using IEDs, bunkers and tunnels to thicken their defense,” the Commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan, John Nicholson, revealed in a statement. “This is the right munition to reduce these obstacles and maintain the momentum of our offensive against [ISIS].” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Nicholson signed off on the use of the bomb, which is said to be 20,000 pounds heavier than each Tomahawk cruise missile that was launched at Syria last week, reports state.
