TO BE KILLED - 5/9/2019
PLUTO'S parent became ill and was hospitalized and her mother dumped her dog at the shelter citing behavior. Except for one key thing -- poor Pluto seems to have a neurological issue that causes his head to tilt and for him to spin in circles. This kid needed understanding, he needed vet care, and at the very least he needed kindness. Instead he was dumped to die, even though he is gentle with children and great with dogs and even CATS!!!! How could anyone expected him to be ok when he not only lost his parent who he adored, he is also most likely in need of care himself. Please don't let the meanness and the heartlessness of a human being stand in the way of his happiness. Foster or adopt Pluto now. You need to message our page or email us at MustLoveDogsNYC@gmail.com for assistance.

PLUTO, ID# 61452, 2 yrs old, Unaltered Male
Manhattan ACC, Medium Mixed Breed, Black / Brown
Surrender Reason: Brought in by owners family member
Shelter Assessment Rating: NEW HOPE ONLY
No children (under 13)
Medical Behavior Rating:
AT RISK NOTE: Pluto has remained anxious at the care center, displaying barrier reactivity and distance increasing behaviors around new people. Pluto would be best suited for placement with a new hope partner that can provide the necessary behavior modification. Medically, Pluto may may have a neurological condition and is recommended for follow up care.
OWNER SURRENDER NOTES - BASIC INFORMATION:
Pluto's owner is in the hospital and left the dog with her mother. Her mother can no longer care for the dog because of his behavior issues. Pluto lived with 1 adult. Owners mother stated the dog does not like strangers and will try to nip at them. When taking the dog out of the transport van the dog was growling, hard barking, and giving wail eyes. Owner's mother stated the dog is good with kids and Is gentle with them. She also stated the dog is good with other dogs. Owners mother owns cats and stated the dog plays well with them. Pluto does not guard his resources. He has no bite history. He is not housetrained and has a high energy level.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 5/5/19: Pluto remains at the back of his kennel upon approach and is slowly leashed after some coaxing with treats. While walking in the yard, he keeps a tucked tail and pulls hard away from the handler, often turning around to try returning back inside. When spotting another dog, he crouches low and runs in the opposite direction. In the hallway, Pluto continues to display frightened behavior (tail tucked, laying down) and snaps at a volunteer when offered a treat.
SHELTER ASSESSMENT SUMMARIES - Date of assessment: 2-May-2019
Summary: In the assessment room, Pluto began repeatedly spinning in circles. This behavior was able to be briefly interrupted, but then returned. For this reason, a handling assessment was unable to be preformed. Please see his owner surrender profile for a full report of his behavior in his previous home.
PLAYGROUP NOTES - DOG TO DOG SUMMARIES:
5/2: When introduced off leash to dogs in our care center, Pluto keeps mostly to himself. The previous caretaker reported him to be 'good" with other dogs, but did not provide details.
