TO BE KILLED – 6/13/2019
Given up for “no time” a beautiful, big hearted, affectionate boy and his sister (Karma) are slated to die! ☹
“A big lovable bear and lap dog,” gushed Blue’s parent, just before they walked out the door on him, citing “NO TIME.” A low energy sweetheart, all he wanted was to lay around, be held, pet, and adored by his parent. He would follow this person around, just wanting to be near. With his sister Karma, he was the submissive of the two, and would look to her for cues on how he should behave. Blue loved his life, and he thought that it was secure, and that his parent would love him forever. So it’s incredibly hard for him at the shelter, and he has not been allowed to acclimate – he’s been there only TWO days. We are certain that if Blue was back in a family home, he would be his big mushy self, because that is the true spirit of this big gentle giant. He asks only for love, he asks only for safety and commitment from the person he gives his heart too. He has a wonderful resume, too! So please, if you are an experienced foster or adopter in an adult only home (no kids under age 13) message our page or email us at MustLoveDogsNYC@gmail.com for assistance fostering or adopting this big hearted, kind and loving boy.

SHELTER ASSESSMENT SUMMARIES - Date of assessment: 6/11/2019
Summary:: The previous owners report that Blue is uncomfortable around some strangers and will bark at them. At the care center, Blue was reported to hard bark at handlers when they attempted to leash him and remove him from his kennel. He also was reported to bark and lunge at strangers while on leash outside. Erring on the side of caution, we feel that Blue is not a safe candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Blue is described as having a low level of energy.

Recommendations comments:: No children: The previous owners report that Blue barks at some strangers and used to bark at children. At the care center, he was seen barking and lunging at strangers while on leash and hard barked at handlers when they attempted to remove him from his kennel. Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend an adult-only home for Blue. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home and shelter environment, including barking and lunging at strangers, and hard barking at handlers when they attempt to remove him from his kennel, the behavior department recommends Blue be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: The previous owners report that Blue is only partially housetrained and may have accidents in the home. Please see handout on House soiling. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Blue is reported to bark at some strangers, bark at children at times, and hard bark at handlers when they attempted to remove him from his kennel. This suggests that his is uncomfortable around some strangers and with handling, displaying a potential for defensive aggression. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.

*** NEW NYC ACC RATING SYSTEM ***
Dogs with Level 1 determinations are suitable for the majority of homes. These dogs are not displaying concerning behaviors in shelter, and the owner surrender profile (where available) is positive.
Dogs with Level 2 determinations will be suitable for adopters with some previous dog experience. They will have displayed behavior in the shelter (or have owner reported behavior) that requires some training, or is simply not suitable for an adopter with minimal experience.
Dogs with Level 3 determinations will need to go to homes with experienced adopters, and the ACC strongly suggest that the adopter have prior experience with the challenges described and/or an understanding of the challenge and how to manage it safely in a home environment.
