Child Support, Fail, and Jail: Jay-Z and Roc Nation to Invest $3 Million in App That Combats Mass Incarceration @balleralert Jay-Z and Roc Nation to Invest $3 Million in App That Combats Mass Incarceration-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Jay-Z and Roc Nation will reportedly make a $3 million investment in an app called Promise, that combats mass incarceration. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ According to the website, the app was created by Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins and Diana Frappier to “get people out of jail and provide ongoing support and supervision to help keep them out.” The hope is that the platform will exist as an alternative to incarcerating individuals who cannot afford bail or who miss court dates by mistake. It will provide services to users that will help them log upcoming court dates, counseling appointments, and drug tests. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ When it comes to rehabilitation, Promise plans to provide programs to users that assist with job training and getting information about housing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ As a rapper, Jay-Z has used his platform to consistently speak about how the jail system is designed to fail those of low class and people of color. Last year the rapper wrote an opinion piece on Father’s Day about the exploitative bail industry. For many individuals, they are jailed due to their inability to afford bail, despite not being convicted of crimes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ During an interview with TechCrunch, Ellis-Lamkins spoke on the small infractions that lead to many people of color ending up behind bars. “People are going to jail because they look at a piece of paper and misread it, or are going to jail because they can’t afford a class because they’re instead paying child support. If we’re putting people in jail because they’re poor, brown or black, we’re spending money the wrong way.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “We are increasingly alarmed by the injustice in our criminal justice system,” Jay-Z said in a statement confirming his involvement with the app. “Money, time and lives are wasted with the current policies. It’s time for an innovative and progressive technology that offers sustainable solutions to tough problems. Promise’s team, led by Phaedra, is building an app that can help provide ‘liberty and justice for all’ to millions.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀

Bailey Jay, College, and Drive By: 2 hours ago 545 Likes Brazilian rights activist Marielle Franco assassinated in drive- by shooting Rio city councillor Marielle Franco was killed in a targeted shooting on Wednesday night. She was an outspoken critic of police violence and deploying the army into poor neighbourhoods of Rio MarielleFranco Rest in power! 💔🙏🏾 . Via The Root: "Marielle Franco, 38, a black politician from Rio de Janeiro, died fighting for the rights of women and favela dwellers. As a councilwoman from the Maré favela, she denounced the police brutality that favela residents, most of them black, regularly experienced. . On Wednesday around 9:20 p.m., armed men gunned the councilwoman down in her car in the center of Rio de Janeiro with nine shots—four to the head. Her driver, Anderson Pedro Gomes, also died. She had just left an event that she organized about black women’s empowerment. . Her death touched so many people that supporters organized vigils and protests in more than 20 cities across Brazil. Most of these protests were against the genocide of black people in Brazil. For Afro-Brazilians, Franco proved that a black person from a favela could be educated, have dignity and also fight against the social injustice that they suffer from every day. For women, she proved that they could overcome sexism and machismo in Brazil. But her death is hitting Afro-Brazilian women, who suffer the most from Brazil’s violent, racist and sexist society, the hardest. . “She died because she was a combative black woman,” said Lua Nascimento, an Afro-Brazilian college classmate of Franco’s who attended a protest on her behalf in Salvador, Brazil. “She was executed because she was a black favela dweller who fought against the murder of black favela dwellers. The genocide of the black population continues in this country. ” . Thousands of people gathered in front of Rio de Janeiro’s council chambers to pay homage to Franco, who was buried Thursday night. To show their digital support for her, Brazilians are changing their Facebook profile photos to those of Franco and using the hashtag MariellePresente, which translates to “Marielle is here.” . Amnesty International, the longtime leader of a campaign against the genocide of black people in Brazil, demanded that her death be rigorously investigated. With those nine shots, Franco became one more statistic in this genocide. Just over 50 percent of Brazil’s population of 200 million is black ... [Continued in comments]

DeMille Award’ at the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The 63-year-old lit up the night when she delivered a thought-provoking acceptance speech that made the moment even more powerful. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Following the recent launch of the TimesUp anti-sexual misconduct group, hundreds of industry heavy-hitter women graced the red carpet in all black as a silent scream for justice against sexual assault and abuse in Hollywood. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ During her speech, Winfrey expressed how overwhelming it was to be granted such an esteemed award. But, she wasted no time in shedding light on something that it has often been dimmed on-abuse. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “It's the insatiable dedication to uncovering the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice. To tyrants and victims, and secrets and lies," she says. "What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A victim of sexual abuse herself, Winfrey admits that she has been inspired by all of the stories of the women who have come forward. She later highlighted Recy Taylor, a woman of color who was brutally raped by six white men in 1944. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “She lived as we all have lived, too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men. For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. America, Fresh, and John Legend: John Legend and Jesse Williams Teanm Up For 1968 Olympics Protest Documentary @balleralert John Legend and Jesse Williams Team Up For 1968 Olympics Protest Documentary – blogged by @MsJEnnyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Amid the recent controversy surrounding NFL players' rights to protest during the national anthem, JohnLegend and JesseWilliams are teaming up to highlight one of the most famous protests in sports – TommieSmith at the Games of the XIX Olympiad in Mexico City. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Legend and Williams, who have both been very vocal about racial injustices in America, will be joining forces to executive produce a documentary about Smith’s world-renowned protest for racial injustice and human rights during the national anthem. The documentary, titled “With Drawn Arms,” will focus on Smith’s strength and John Carlos’ courage to join in, despite the consequences. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, as the protests of the national anthem resurface in sports, both Legend and Williams believe Smith’s story deserves to be told. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “We are excited to collaborate with true artists in Glenn Kaino and Afshin Shahidi to bring this powerful story to the world in a fresh and compelling way,” Legend said. “In this current climate we are once again being charged to stand up to bigotry, fear, and hate. We are inspired by this story and honored to be a creative partner on this film.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Tommie Smith is more than an iconic poster or risky act of defiance that inspires people the world over,” Williams said. “He is a living man, whose incredible journey is worthy of examination. I couldn’t be more excited to join forces with this team of film makers, to share his reality and challenge our notions of heroism in the process.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to Deadline, the film is expected to be released October of next year, for the 50th anniversary of the raised fist by the now-73-year-old Smith.

Africa, Ali, and America: u/ZeroTenenbaum 2d i.redd.it happiest camper Our parents and grand parents had Muhammad Ali. I don't care if they lived in America or Africa or China or India - they knew about Muhammad Ali and they saw him take his stances against injustice and whether they liked him or hated him, he started a conversation. When Colin Kaepernick took a stand, he was sidelined. Maligned. The overlords tried to end his career and shut him the fuck up. In March, Donald Trump - the most powerful man in the world by a wide margin - said that no team will sign him because they don't want to get a nasty tweet from him if they do. But then the unthinkable happened. Other NFL players started saying "enough is enough - there is injustice in our society and we need to address it". He started a movement. Dozens of players are now taking a stand. Michael Bennett is drawing attention to profiling. These are players who were told explicitly not to ever take a stand, and now they're participating in a debate. It's just talking! The best ideas will win! But before Kaep, you couldn't chime in without being penalized - badly - professionally - that's over. Kaep took a risk and sacrificed everything and, in doing so, changed everything. And for all of u who are gonna pop off saying Kaep is racist...bear in mind that his adoptive parents Rick and Teresa are a rural white couple from Wisconsin and cheer him on at all his games and love him and support him in his mission so good luck with that! Everybody needs heroes and he's one of mine. Bless up 🇺🇸

Life, Memes, and Common: HOLD ON TO YOUR SALAH BECAUSE IF YOU LOSE THAT YOU LOSE EVERYTHING GARDENOFTHEPIOUS A common habit among many Muslims today is to abandon salah, especially the dawn and evening prayers. This poisonous habit of abandoning prayers, whether due to laziness or deliberate negligence, will cause many people to enter the hellfire on the Day of Judgement. - When a person starts neglecting the prayers, other negative effects follow, such as failing to perform good deeds and regularly falling into sinful acts. Such people deny the final day and continue with their defiance until death overtakes them, but by then it will be too late to repent and to be forgiven for their disobedience. - To neglect salah, is to be de-linked from Allah and deprived of His mercy, for it is a remedy for all the diseases of the heart and for what corrupts the soul. How can we hope to patiently fight against injustice and oppression, if we can barely stand up for any of our five prayers. It is no wonder then that the Ummah today lags behind in almost all areas of life, and is constantly humiliated. - “...and establish regular prayer, for prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds, and remembrance of Allah is the greatest thing in life without a doubt. And Allah knows the deeds you do.” (Quran, 29:45) - May Allah make the five daily prayers the coolness of our eyes and a source of salvation in the Hereafter, Ameen. - @gardenofthepious
