Animals, Bad, and Cats: vet-and-wild The weird wavs l 've accidentally trained my cat to wake me up I can't stand animals that are obnoxious in the mornings when they want to get up and be fed. So, l've taken a pretty hard stance on ignoring obnoxious morning behavior to avoid reinforcing it. However, Garrus is a very fast learner, and he's noticed that there's a few things I'm really bad at ignoring. I've created the most bizarre alarm 1. Chowing on my phono oord. Ho only dooo it in tho morning when he wants me to get up. I've never seen him do it any other time. It's really hard for me to ignore my cat chewing on something plugged into an outlet. And so I have accidentally trained him to chew on it when I'm being stubborn and I don't want to get out of bed. Solution: unplug the phone and go back to sleep. 2. Swatting at my curtains. He likes to do it when he has the night zoomies and l'm trying to sleep instead of giving him attention. It's a really annoying sound. Like, REALLY annoying. And in my half-asleep state, my initial response was to grumble and tell him to knock it off. Didn't work so well for a cat that is doing an obnoxious behavior to get attention He didn't care that I was yelling at him-he was getting the attention he wanted. The one time l was just too exhausted to deal with him and didn't respond, he gave up pretty quickly. That'o whon I roalizod ho'd boon playing mo. Now I juot ignore it and he stops pretty fast. 3. Changing the temperature on my snake's HerpStat. I don't even know how he started this one, but one day I was lounging in my bed in the morning and I heard the HerpStat beeping like it does when the temp has been changed. And l panicked because I didn't want my snake being burnt to a crisp! Big mistake. My sudden movement out of bed reinforced Garrus, and for the next few days l'd wake up to beeping. I don't know if he was biting it, or nudging it, or what but my attempts to scold him only caused him to make happy "murrrrp" noises because I was acknowledging his presence. I have now placed the HerpStat in a high open drawer so he can't reach it. But I'm still kind of in shock that he learned to do this. Little punk. l think Pavlov is laughing at me clickercake Accidentally reinforced behaviors are an absolute riot clickerpunk Omg my mornings are EXACTLY like this. But my cat has discovered that if she scratches the floor i shoot out of bed because i dont want her peeing on the floor or something.. The moment i sit up in bed she goes "brrrp!" because im awake.. Damn smart cats Source: vet-and-wild 287 notes Cat training

Being Alone, Children, and Comfortable: IA THEMETAPICTURE.COM Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour iods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene. One warm afternoon the man by the window describeda parade passing by. Although the other man couldn't hear the band -he could see it. In his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words. Days and weeks passed. e morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed.. it faced a blank wall The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you," she said. Epilogue There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all of the things you have that money can't buy. And share it. Africa, Community, and Facts: A man in Africa named Yacouba Sawadogo single handedly stopped the desertification of his region by reviving ancient farming and irrigation techniques despite being ridiculed by his community Ultrafacts.tumblr.comm athelind: imaginemedrawinglife: soundssimpleright: ultrafacts: Yacouba Sawadogo is an exceptional man – he single-handedly managed to solve a crisis that many scientists and development organizations could not. The simple old farmer’s re-forestation and soil conservation techniques are so effective they’ve helped turn the tide in the fight against the desertification of the harsh lands in northern Burkina Faso. Over-farming, over-grazing and over population have, over the years, resulted in heavy soil erosion and drying in this landlocked West African nation. Although national and international researchers tried to fix the grave situation, it really didn’t really make much of a difference. Until Yacouba decided to take matters into his own hands in 1980. Yacouba’s methods were so odd that his fellow farmers ridiculed him. But when his techniques successfully regenerated the forest, they were forced to sit up and take notice. Yacouba revived an ancient African farming practice called ‘zai’, which led to forest growth and increased soil quality. (Fact Source) Follow Ultrafacts for more facts The way it works is really cool! You can read about it here. There’s been a documentary about him, too @solarpunk-aesthetic Something 19th and 20th century Western science consistently overlooked is that a lot of traditional methods are exquisite examples of the scientific method in action, the product of testing hypotheses and comparing results and control groups iteratively, over a period of hundreds or even thousands of years. Respect ancient wisdom. Respect ancient science.

Books, Children, and Dating: kamorth: nerdygirlnoodles: Okay, but seriously on the topic of straight people being so overly concerned about their children being exposed to homosexuality As some of you know, I am a makeup artist in a holistic beauty boutique in a very wealthy area of eastern New York. The week before Halloween I was offering simple costume makeup designs for both adults and children. So my last client of the evening was a 15 year old girl who came in to get her makeup done for the Halloween dance at her school. I was enjoying a conversation with both the girl and her mother when suddenly the topic of transgender came up. I got a little nervous because I have a hard time keeping my mouth shut when I hear people speaking negatively about these sorts of topics and as I mentioned, my store is in a very upscale, white conservative area Anyway, the girl starts telling us that her friend prefers to be a boy now. She says it very simply and comfortably and it made me happy to see her talk about it as if it was really no big deal Her mother says How does she even know what transgender is though? She's a little young to be making a decision like that. I really think the media is taking things too far with all this gay stuff. I'm not against it or anything, but didn't you just tell me two boys in your class are dating too? The girl said that yes, two boys she knew were dating and another boy she knew was gay also. (And she also corrected the pronouns her mother used for her friend) nl don't mind that she knows that homosexuality is," the mother said But I don't think it should be taught at such a young age. Did you know it's on Disney channel now? It took me a moment to respond, I just kept painting the girl's face until I could figure out what I wanted to say, Well," I said. "We tend to teach heterosexuality literally from the time a child is born. Most children's books and movies are even centered around a romance of some kind like a Prince and a Princess for example. There's rarely a children's movie that comes out where the main male and female character don't end up marrying each other in the end. If we don't have a problem flooding our children's minds with heterosexuality from the time they are able to sit up and watch a movie on their own, what is so wrong with showing them two boys or two girls being in love? We aren't showing them sex. We aren't showing them anything inappropriate. Since when is love inappropriate? If we show them love in all it's forms (be it gay or straight) from an early age, they will see that it's all perfectly normal and natural and maybe we can finally put homophobic the past.." The woman considered this for a second and then said "I just feel like they see it and then they start to think that they might be too And maybe they are. But isn't it better for them to know that it's okay? They aren't hurting anyone." Then the girl said. "No ones going around just thinking they are gay because they know what gay is, mom. I know what a chicken is, that doesn't mean I'm going to wake up tomorrow and start clucking." I loved this kid. I hope she does well in all of her endeavors I'm not going to wake up tomorrow and start clucking Teach them well and let them lead the way.

Teach them well and let them lead the way.
