sonic hedgehog: fuckingflying I hate linguistic anthropology. Why? One of the most influential experiments in linguistic anthropology involved teaching a chimp asl. One of the most influential linguistics is named Noam Chomsky. You know what the chimp's name was? Nim Chimpsky Fucking monkey purn And this is in textbooks, in documentaries, everywhere. And everyone just IGNORES THIS GOD AWFUL PUN cause of how important the experiment was. But BUT LOOK AT THIS SHIT. FUCKING NIM CHIMPSKY. I HATE THIS WHOLE FIELD. dendritic-trees Its not just the linguistic anthropologists. There's a group of very important genes that determine if your body develops in the right shape/ organization... they are called the hedgehog genes, because fruit fly geneticists are all ridiculous. The different hedgehog genes are all named after different hedgehogs. And then someone decided to get clever and name one "sonic hedgehog" because this is just what fruitfly geneticists do. Well sonic hedgehog controls brain development, and now actual doctors are stuck in the position of explaining to grieving parents that their child's lethal birth defects or life-threatening tumors are caused by a "sonic hedgehog mutation". And this is why no one will invite the fruit fly people to parties error-404-fuck-not-found Biogeochemical scientists, upon discovering the complex mechanisms that govern the storage and use of molecular iron on our planet, decided to call this cycle "the ferrous wheel" We groaned about that for at least five solid minutes. callmegallifreya The phenomenon of sneezing when exposed to sudden bright light is called an Autosomal-dominant Compelling Helio Opthalmic Outburst. Oh man. 2016 is so poppin. It鈥檚 only January鈥︷煒 And everyone is going to appropriating like beyonce for spring. Tell your little cousins that want to be like her that this isn鈥檛 okay The Idea that appropriation is okay starts with kids emulating or their parents allowing them to dress up as other cultures unchecked Oh no the fuck she didn鈥檛鈥*massages temples*鈥o no and no. mood: 鈥淗OW DARE YOU ?!! WE WERE ROOTING FOR YOU ! WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU!! 鈥 2 things. 1. I get that it鈥檚 cool to be up on all the social justice lingo. It鈥檚 hip to toss around words like appropriation. BUT PLEASE be sure that in the midst of using the term, it鈥檚 used properly. There is a difference between appropriation and appreciation. The director Ben Mor ( an INDIAN MAN) discussed that his goal in choosing a direction for the video was to make sure a love and appreciation of Indian culture came through loud and clear. 2. Misdirected anger makes me giggle. People mad at Beyonce as though she designed and directed the video. This is Coldplay鈥檚 song and video. They gave the green light in the directors vision鈥 You鈥檝e nothing to say about that. The videos (Indian) director as well as the designers involved created the Vision and concept鈥. You鈥檝e nothing to say about that鈥. It鈥檚 like some of y'all were just waiting for your chance to tell black people they鈥檙e guilty of appropriation too. Its Funny how each time we鈥檙e vocal about a social justice cause we constantly get hit with a rebuttal consistently trying to point out a fault of ours, while excusing other parties involved. And if I鈥檓 wrong鈥. Why is the discussion in a song beyonce is only featured on, centered around her versus the director/Coldplay鈥.. I welcome outrage, but misdirected bandwagon outrage is a waste of everyone鈥檚 time鈥.. Yeah 鈥 I think the cultural appropriation discussion on tumblr is way too simplistic. Many people within certain cultures actually consider it an honor for outsiders to wear their clothes, dance like them, etc. my family in Colombia gave my white friends ponchos and told them to wear it in America 鈥渢o remember us鈥 yet some white girl was horrified at how appropriative it was 鈥 Like what do we do in that situation? My mother almost married an Iranian/Turkish guy and people in his circle gave her traditional clothing and even DVDs on how to belly dance (I wish I were making this up lol). My best friend when I was little was Pakistani and the mom would dress me up in their traditional clothing and I would even eat with my hands with them and my dad and grandmother were given tons of jewelry and traditional clothing and were pushed to wear it lmaoo . I鈥檓 not even defending Beyonc茅 all I鈥檓 saying is that the discussion of cultural appropriation is extremely simplistic. In your noble attempts to be anti-imperialist I think some of you lose yourself in your theoretical mental acrobatics , disregarding other points of view that are shared by many people in said groups you鈥檙e supposedly defending. It鈥檚 called theory induced blindness and all I ask is to simply be slightly more open minded in different perspectives. Once again I鈥檓 not even defending Beyonc茅 , this is more about the discussion of CA in general on this one sided ass website. My only critique of the above statements is that you strip Beyonc茅 of any agency when you blame Coldplay and the director like she鈥檚 worth almost half a billion dollars and if she knew something was wrong she could have said something it鈥檚 BS to make her the victim IMO she鈥檚 a powerful woman legit one of the most influential and powerful singers in history. BUT the director who is of said culture I think personally has a right to promote his culture even if it鈥檚 someone who isn鈥檛 of that culture. This notion of you must only adhere strictly and purely to your own culture no exceptions is unrealistic and I think misguided in understanding how cultures work and function historically but Idk maybe it鈥檚 Cus I studied culture in a more scientific sense so I struggle to really take this CA talk a la tumblr seriously and I鈥檓 sorry if this comes off as problematic but I鈥檓 trying my best to be open minded and I鈥檓 listening. I just think there needs to be more nuance and allowance of gray area on this website. But I鈥檓 always in the minority when it comes to that opinion. : jgotjuice27: the-troynicole-experience: thechanelmuse: dynastylnoire: sauvamente: iverbz: juugmayne: suvnny: This is not ok. This is not ok. POC can appropriate culture too.
