Advertisement AdChoices In speaking with film site HeyUGuys.com, the 12-year-old actor dished on his early career aspirations to become a football player and a scientist in search of a cure for cancer. “In middle school I didn’t know what to do with my life,” he said. “I was a bit of a bad child, I’d always get in trouble because I had a lot of movement. But the drama program settled me down, I can use my movement for good.” The South Florida-native has earned praises from critics and co-stars for his performance of Little, a younger portrayal of the film’s lead character Chiron, who struggles growing up in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood. Hibbert’s “Moonlight” co-star Mahershala Ali called Hibbert the “best” scene partner he’s ever worked with. Now with a bright acting career on the horizon, Hibbert went on to tell the site that he plans to put his earnings towards science. “Football is out of the question now, but scientist-wise, I’m going to take most of my money… Wait, some of my money, and build a lab,” he said. “And I’m going to take the best scientists to work on curing cancer and stuff like that.” Kudos to Alex for making the world a better place! @lt_or_bust 17thsoulja blackexcellence BlackIG17th supportblackart supportblackyouth: 12-Year-Old 'Moonlight' Star Wants To Spend Acting Money On Cancer Research soul ja4 “Moonlight” actor Alex R. Noeli Zarate, a senior at Santa Ana HighSchool, surprised everyone, even herself, when she received a perfect score on her AP Spanish Language and Culture exam. "I was surprised by the results considering the complexity of the exam," she said, according to a SantaAna Unified School District news release. "I honestly did not study much because you can't really prepare for it." Zarate is a native of Guanajato, Mexico and has a GPA of 4.6. The Harvard Law Review has elected the first black woman to serve as president in the legal journal’s 130-year history. ImeIme A. Umana, a native of Harrisburg, Pa., will serve as the 131st leader of the organization. The Harvard Crimson reports that as an undergraduate at Harvard, she double-majored in government and African-American studies. She graduated in 2014 and is expecting to receive her J.D. in 2018, according to her LinkedIn profile. In an email to the Crimson, outgoing Law Review President Michael L. Zuckerman wrote that he is excited to see where Umana takes the publication in the coming year. “ImeIme is one of the most brilliant, thoughtful, and caring people I’ve met, and the Law Review is in phenomenally good hands,” Zuckerman wrote. Umana was selected from a field of 12 candidates, eight of whom were women and eight of whom were people of color, according to Zuckerman. All candidates for president must answer questions from a forum of editors, write responses to submitted questions and participate in mock editorial activities. “ImeIme’s election as the Law Review’s first female black president is historic,” Zuckerman wrote. “For a field in which women and people of color have for too much of our past been marginalized or underrepresented, her election is an important and encouraging step toward a richer and more inclusive legal conversation.”In her job as president, Umana will oversee the work of 90 student editors and staff members as well as communicate with a group of writers that includes faculty members. “Knowing ImeIme, I can’t wait to applaud her in a year’s time for the extraordinary work that I am certain she will do,” Zuckerman wrote. The Crimson reports that Umana’s election comes just as the Law Review seeks to accept editors from a wider variety of backgrounds. Last year it elected the most diverse class of editors in its history. In addition, in 2013 the journal expanded its affirmative action policy to include gender as a factor in its admissions process. 17thsoulja BlackIG17th blackexcellence: Harvard Law Review Elects 1st Black Female President in Its 130-Year History 17th soulja4 The Harvard Law Review has elected the first black woman to serve as president in the legal journal’s 130-year history. Inhabitat.com- Seattle could pull billions of dollars out of its longtime bank because of its role in the construction of the Dakota Access oil pipeline DAPL. On Wednesday, a Seattle City Council committee voted unanimously to divest nearly $3 billion of the city’s funds from Wells Fargo, one of 17 financial institutions involved in financing the contentious project. Although the bill still has to undergo a procedural vote by the full council on Tuesday, it is “widely expected to pass,” activist Shaun King wrote in the Daily News. During the hearing, councilwoman Debora Juarez said that committee members all agreed that divestment was the city’s “goal.” Should the legislation push through, Seattle will not renew its contract with WellsFargo when it expires in 2018. Neither will the city be allowed to make new investments with the bank for three years. The proposal would be a major victory for the pipeline’s opponents, who returned to the site of last year’s monthslong protests at StandingRock after President Donald Trump ordered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to expedite the completion of the 1,000-mile-long oil pipeline. “You faced down attack dogs, blizzards and rubber bullets,” councilwoman Kshama Sawant, who co-sponsored the bill, told a crowd on Wednesday, referring to the thousands of Native Americans and activists who faced off with law enforcement during last year’s standoff. “If we do not fight we will not win. Let’s build on this, make sure other cities move to divest from Wells Fargo,” she added. Baller Alert's Black History Month Facts - blogged by: @eleven8 Christina M. Jenkins, born in 1928, is credited with inventing the hair weaving technique. Christina, a native of Louisiana, began researching ways to secure wigs and hairpieces while working for a Chicago wig manufacturer in 1949. In the early 1950’s Jenkins invented the process of interweaving strands of live hair and strands of commercial hair, with cord like material to permanently join the strands thereto. It was time consuming, but lasted longer. She received the patent for this process in 1951. Though wigs and hair pieces had been worn for thousands of years by people of different races, it was Christina Jenkins who came up with this particular idea. Prior to the Christina inventing the process of sewing weave onto the hair, people would put the weave hair on to hair pins placed on the scalp. Christina was married to a jazz musician named Herman Duke Jenkins. The couple lived n Ohio where they formed their company “Christina’s Hair-Weev.” People loved the look and technique so much that they would pay Christina to travel across the country to teach them how to apply a hair weave. christinajenkins blackhistory blackhistorymonth bablackhistory: BA Black History Facts MO 4A 15 INVENT Christina M Jen. How do you sleep at night? Your body is resting but your soul is troubled. I use writing to show you that I am a whole person. I know that between what is meant & not said & what is said but not meant, much of love is lost. While some people face more suffering than others, I will represent the oppressed, I will define myself on my own terms as the fluidity of the f*ckry continues to exist. It is not for anyone else to define yourself but you & a culture that loves you. Some days I am a black man, Some days I am an African man, Some days I am an African woman, Some days I am a Palestinian child, Or an animal trying to stop the unnecessary slaughter of life for capitalism. Some days I am a tree in a rainforest about to be destroyed, some days I am a native trying to stop a pipeline... when we work together we can achieve whatever. Some days I have no money & I am fighting against governmental cuts, as I need to feed my family. Some days I am a labourer in a coltan mine, or on an avocado plantation, somedays I imagine myself working in Barbados on the sugar plantations, picking tea in Sri Lanka, or rice in China. Some days I am from West Papua, or an aboriginal Australian forced into a concentration camp some call a reservation. Some days I am homeless on the streets of London, other days I am a woman who is a victim of sexual violence & police brutality. Everyday I am me, I wish that we could just all be one, just another member of the global human race, but you are reading this in English, my post colonial tongue appeals to you because I was educated in the Uk & have a western passport, because of the violence carried out by the colonisers who created borders. Yet those refugees in the camp in Calais, who only speak Arabic & not french don't matter to many, this is why you have to be the voice, of those silenced by the systems that benefit a few but destroy many others. Today I might be a sex slave in Romania or a tortured man in Guantanamo bay, tomorrow I might be a political prisoner in Angola... 10-Year Old Creates Device to Prevent Hot Car Deaths-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Bishop Curry V is only 10 years old and is already leaving his mark on the world with his latest creation. The young Texas native is now making headlines for his latest project which is a device that could potentially help prevent children from dying in hot cars. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ NBC Washington reports that overall, the number of children who have died in hot cars has made a huge increase over the last year, with Curry's home state having the highest number of cases. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In addition to the epidemic affecting his hometown, it also has had a personal affect on Bishop. Last summer a baby died in a minivan near his home right outside McKinney. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ His father, Bishop Curry IV, knew the exact location of the house. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Sometimes babies fall asleep and they’re really quiet, so if you’re rushing home from work or you’re rushing to the grocery store, I could see how somebody could forget,” said Curry, who is an engineer for Toyota in Plano, Texas. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Bishop used the horrific incident as inspiration to create a device called “Oasis,” which would attach to a car seat and detect if a child is left inside the vehicle, causing it to blow cool air into the vehicle until the parents or the police arrive. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “It would be a dream to have lots of inventions that would save many lives,” the tech savvy 10-year-old told the news station. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While the device is still in the design phase, it’s development is off to a great start.
