College, Disappointed, and Best: Tweet Duolingo e @duolingo This year, we achieved a 50:50 gender ratio for new software engineer hires. V Next up: 50:50 companywide. This Women in Tech Week, we're proud to celebrate all of the incredible women who make Duolingo great #2018:WITW Tweet your reply Luis von Ahn @LuisvonAhn Duolingo just tweeted about how we achieved a 50% female ratio of new engineering college graduate hires. We're very proud of this. I'm disappointed that the top comments were all from men angrily arguing discrimination, and that we should hire the best people instead. Idiots. Luis von Ahn @LuisvonAhn T he women we hired had either perfect or near perfect GPAs from the best universities in the world, with stellar recommendations, and aced our very thorough interview process. We've gotten over 90K applicants for jobs throughout time, and we've made offers to under 250. 10/11/18, 9:42 AM 120 Retweets 880 Likes Luis von Ahn @LuisvonAhr We achieved a 50% ratio not by lowering our standards or by discriminating against men. We did it by only actively recruiting fronm colleges with higher female ratios in their computer science programs. These were also not shitty colleges -- CMU, MIT, Duke, Cornell, Harvard, etc. 10/11/18, 9:44 AM 244 Retweets 1,227 Likes Luis von Ahn @LuisvonAhn If other companies do this, colleges will be incentivized to have more diverse graduating classes. I'm amazed that it's 2018 and I still have to defend gender equality. 10/11/18, 9:44 AM 125 Retweets 1,259 Likes

It’s called “head pressing” and it occurs in dogs and cats.  Head pressing is characterized by the compulsive act of pressing the head against a wall or other object for no apparent reason. This generally indicates damage to the nervous system, which may result from a number of varying causes, including prosencephalon disease (in which the forebrain and thalamusparts of the brain are damaged), or toxic poisoning. http://www.petmd.com/cat/conditions/neurological/c_ct_headpressing http://www.vet.cornell.edu/FHC/health_resources/toxoplasmosis.cfm (head pressing is listed as a symptom) http://sevneurology.com/patients/clip-multilobular-osteochondroma (About a dog’s brain tumor but head pressing is listed as a symptom) YOU JUST SAVED THE LIFE OF MY CAT THANK YOU! SPREAD THIS LIKE WILDFIRE. THIS COULD SAVE YOUR KITTIE’S LIFE! IT SAYS IT OCCURS IN DOGS TOO SO LET’S JUST SAVE AS MANY ANIMALS AS POSSIBLE. always reblog for a dog or cat Reblogging again~~ The links don’t appear to be working anymore so here’s the first plus a few others: http://www.petmd.com/cat/conditions/neurological/c_ct_headpressing (Cats) https://purrfectlove.net/2015/03/head-pressing-in-cats/ (Cats) http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/neurological/c_multi_headpressing (Dogs) https://wagwalking.com/condition/head-pressing (Dogs) https://animalwellnessmagazine.com/head-pressing-warning-sign/ (General) IMPORTANT!! My elder cat had head pressing as one of her symptoms when she had toxoplasmosis. Many people, dogs and cats have this, and the vast majority never get sick, but when it arises as clinical disease, it usually presents as neurological problems and brain damage. HEAD PRESSING IS A SERIOUS SYMPTOM OF BRAIN ISSUES, DON’T IGNORE IT! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Internet, Shit, and Target: The Morris Internet Worm source code This disk contains the complete source code of the Morns Intemner worm program. It was written by a student at Cornell University, Robert Tappan Morris, and launched on November 2, 1988 from MIT. It’s trapped on a floppy tho this is some dark shit it has been denied its purpose forever bound to this obsolete storage am i glad it’s in there and we’re out here people reading fantasy novels ask “why did the ancient ones seal the evil away for ten thousand years instead of just killing it” but then we go ahead and do this shit We have learned nothing from every fantasy novel ever O.O The best part, from the wiki article: “According to its creator, the Morris worm was not written to cause damage, but to gauge the size of the Internet.” It was intended to do good, but the programmer made a mistake and it got out of hand, becoming viral. College, Girls, and Memes: cience | guff.com This woman proved the existence of dark matter Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science. 👩‍🔬 In the spirit of today, @Science wanted to honor Vera Rubin, an amazing American astronomer! How’s that for alliteration? She was born in Philadelphia and grew up with an interest in astronomy. Rubin eventually earned her BA in astronomy from Vassar College and tried to enroll in the graduate astronomy program at Princeton, but they refused to send her a catalogue because women weren’t allowed in the graduate astronomy program...until 1975. Let’s let that sink in for a second. She ended up studying at Cornell University, learning quantum physics from Richard Feynman and quantum mechanics under Hans Bethe. While studying the Andromeda Galaxy with fellow astronomer Kent Ford, Rubin noticed that objects on the outer parts of the galaxy were spinning at the same speed as those on the inside, which was antithetical to the belief objects at the center of a galaxy move faster than those on the outskirts. It turns out that she discovered the existence of the unseeable stuff that affects the movement of galaxies! . .
