rhube: rockyp77: GREAT SEA STORY The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought Captain John DS. Phillips, the result. The Warrimoo’s position was LAT 0º 31’ N and LONG 179 30’ W. The date was 31 December 1899. “Know what this means?” First Mate Payton broke in, “We’re only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line”. Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime. He called his navigators to the bridge to check double check the ship’s position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark. Then he adjusted the engine speed. The calm weather clear night worked in his favor. At mid-night the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line! The consequences of this bizarre position were many: The forward part (bow) of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere in the middle of summer.  The rear (stern) was in the Northern Hemisphere in the middle of winter.  The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899. In the bow (forward) part it was 1 January 1900. This ship was therefore not only in: Two different days, Two different months, Two different years, Two different seasons But in two different centuries - all at the same time! What an absolute ledge. : SS WARRIMOO EQUATOR INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE rhube: rockyp77: GREAT SEA STORY The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The Birchwood: saurons-optometrist Follow siniristiriita Having a phone with an internet is such a fucking luxury, though? Like, in the 1980's, if l on a saturday night suddenly needed to find out whether birch trees and the Wendingo myth were native to the same areas, Iwould have to wait until the library opens on monday, go in hoping they have books on trees that happen to mention where birches have spread globally, and then ask if they have any books on the myths and folklore of native americans, receive a weird look from the librarian, find our that there's one book in another library next town over, but it's being borrowed by someone else, wait two weeks to get it, and then read the entire damn thing only to discover that this one doesnt mention wendingos at all And I just got my answer with two google searches, in less than two minutes The answer is yes vegansamstudies kcough coughk where did this question come from??? siniristiriita Well, I'm from Finland, and as a first thing, if there's one thing to know about Finland, it's full of birch trees. Also, at this time of the year, the sun sets early so it's completely black out there at 4 pm. These things do happen in the northern hemisphere. I couldn't get a proper picture, but this is roughly what a birchwood looks at night It's actually way, way creepier when the sky is black and everything is dark, and it's freezing cold because Mother Nature does not love us. Also, humans are good at pattern recognition and creeping the shit out of themselves. Now consider Source: siniristiriita 38 notes The Birchwood

An Aurora is an incredible natural phenomenon. This spectral display is created when electrically-charged particles from the sun enter the Earth’s atmosphere. The changes in color are from the types of gas-particle colliding. According to the Northern Lights Centre, “The most common auroral color, a pale yellowish-green, is produced by oxygen molecules located about 60 miles above the earth. Rare, all-red auroras are produced by high-altitude oxygen, at heights of up to 200 miles. Rhodotus palmatus is recognized as one of the most beautiful mushrooms ever. It is a circumboreal species, meaning it is found in the Northern hemisphere, specifically in Canada, Alaska, Russia and thereabouts. The caps of the Rhodotus palmatus are typically scored over with ridges and veins, which is technically called being sulcate (having parallel grooves) or reticulate (a netlike vein system). The mushroom is adnate, meaning that the gills on the underside of the cap are largely attached to the stem. The netted Rhodotus, like the one pictured, can "bleed" a pinkish, reddish liquid. Penguins are aquatic, flightless birds that are highly adapted to life in the water. Their distinct tuxedo-like appearance is called countershading, a form of camouflage that helps keep them safe in the water. Penguins do have wing-bones, though they are flipper-like and extremely suited to swimming. Penguins are found almost exclusively in the southern hemisphere, where they catch their food underwater and raise their young on land. In general, penguins closer to the equator eat more fish and penguins closer to Antarctica eat more squid and krill. Penguins can spend up to 75% of their lives in the water. They do all of their hunting in the water. Their prey can be found within 60 feet of the surface, so penguins have no need to swim in deep water. They catch prey in their beaks and swallow them whole as they swim. Some species only leave the water for molting and breeding. Mating Season: Varies depending on the species, though most breed during spring and summer. Incubation: Varies from 1 month-66 days depending on the species. Number of offspring: King and emperor penguins lay one egg. All other species of penguin lay two eggs. 🥚🐧: Medical Building 2 3 5 I pass this every day and it always seems like someone caught in a lie. "Where do you work?'" oh the... medical... building.. While vegetarianism and veganism are on the rise in the African-American-Black community; it’s still a relatively new frontier for our people, especially African-Americans. Vegetarianism was relatively low in West Africa, home to our ancestors, so changing your entire diet to a plant based one can be challenging. Following the coronation of Haile Selassie I as Emperor of Ethiopia in 1930, Black vegetarians in the western hemisphere began to rise in large part due to Rastafarianism—a religion developed in Jamaica in the 1930s and rawfoodist such as famous African-American comedian Dick Gregory. Both these factors were contributing forces to the early stages of Black dietary shifts in the U.S, in addition to the phenomenal soulful flavors used in creating African and Caribbean inspired vegan and vegetarian dishes. Vegetarian Restaurant by Hakin, located at 73 NE 167th Street in North Miami Beach, FL 33162 is continuing the delicious tradition of vegan and vegetarian soulful innovation. Just steps away from all three major highways and Jackson Hospital North, the restaurant sits right off 163rd street in an unassuming strip mall with a gigantic sign outside that reads VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT. To be honest, I have driven by this place a trillion times and never stopped. I just wasn’t interested in Vegetarian food in my 20’s, but now, I want to live so I made that stop out of curiosity and have been a customer since! Various organic and natural products are on display near the entrance and to the right, there is a full fledged mini health food store. I was even able to pick up some shea butter and organic oils for my dreads! The restaurant has been in continuous operation for over seven years in the same location. A recent expansion will allow for larger dine in parties in a semi private dining space. Remember 5 Seconds of Summer? Those four southern hemisphere blokes who sang about American Apparel (R.I.P.) and loved Pokémon? They're still alive, and they just might have a new album for us by the end of 2017. _ The band offered a video update on Twitter last week claiming that they were hard at work on LP3, but cruelly offering no further details. _ But last night, Ashton Irwin just may have let slip that the album is due sometime before the end of the year. The drummer posted a photo of himself posing contemplatively with a guitar along with the caption, "Insert album Due Date 00-00-17." _ We're assuming that "17" means 2017, a.k.a. this year and not a hundred years from now, although some 5SOS fans aren't so convinced. _ So what do we know about the mysterious forthcoming LP? Not much, but Ashton has said that he'd like it to be "legendary." He also shared a photo of himself with Dragon Ball Z hair and alluded vaguely to the idea of exciting things happening in the summer. _ We'll believe it when we hear it. _ by Sasha Geffen: LOOKS LIKE 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER WILL FINALLY DROP THEIR "LEGENDARY' THIRD ALBUM NEWS Remember 5 Seconds of Summer? Forget fireworks this New Year's Eve and get your binoculars ready to see the C-2016 U1 NEOWISE comet. NASA has announced that the comet zooming through the inner Solar System *could* be so bright over the next week that you can see it with binoculars and maybe even with the naked eye between now and January 14. Although the prospect of being able to see a comet zoom past might sound scary, don't worry, comet C-2016 U1 NEOWISE has already made it through the closest pass of Earth on December 13, at a distance of around 106 million km (66 million miles).
