e-e-e-s: dudeinpyjamas: anadiableau: Okay but honestly fucking shit like this when they show Zuko’s scar side when talking about Sozin and then having the bar pass and have his non-scar side when Iroh says Roku is his great grandfather if EXACTLY the kind of shit that elevates this show to where really no other show has ever come and probably never will I mean if you frame it in a photo it looks much better, in reality it was a moving shot. Still nice but not amazing. What really is an amzing shot is this Who is realy imprisioned here? The way this shot is framed makes it clear that Zuko is in a prison of his own mind. In fact you can look at how Zuko and Iroh are generally framed in this scene Zuko: and Iroh: Even in shots where Iroh is framed together with the iron bars he is far removed from them while Zuko is right in front: What takes the cake though is the following shot sequence: When it shows Iroh it zooms in from this: To this: While with Zuko it’s the exact reverse. It zooms out from this: To this: Say what you want but man Avatar had some amazing shot composition.  Also the reason The Last Airbender was better than Korra is because atla had Zuko and Iroh, while Korra didn’t. Fight me. In addition to this scene being very well done, the whole The Avatar and the Firelord episode is just genius. It just makes the parallels between Zuko and Aang so much more powerful in retrospect. They weren’t on parallel paths just because. They were on parallel paths because they’re two parts of one lineage: Roku’s Fire Nation lineage and his spiritual-mediator Avatar lineage. And throughout the series the two of them are paired up through visual language, and the show even goes as far as match-cuts between the two of them as they’re in different locations and different fights. I forget where, but I KNOW there’s a shot where Aang is dodging in a fight and basically running towards the viewer and it cuts straight to Zuko doing the exact same thing, like they’re two enactments of one story. And the twin blades? Zuko himself says they’re two halves of a single weapon, and shouldn’t be thought of as separate. The twin blades which we really first see in The Blue Spirit storyline, in which Aang asks Zuko if they COULD HAVE BEEN FRIENDS. It’s been stated that the blades represent the good and evil parts of Zuko, but isn’t that just a direct result of him grappling with his lineage, which is directly tied to Aang? In conclusion: I am not ok and will never be ok. Thanks Avatar. : e-e-e-s: dudeinpyjamas: anadiableau: Okay but honestly fucking shit like this when they show Zuko’s scar side when talking about Sozin and then having the bar pass and have his non-scar side when Iroh says Roku is his great grandfather if EXACTLY the kind of shit that elevates this show to where really no other show has ever come and probably never will I mean if you frame it in a photo it looks much better, in reality it was a moving shot. quentyl: lb-lee: avatarsymbolism: Zuko and Mai v Mr. Boomerang. One of the reasons Avatar is one of the few epic fantasies I’ve actually liked is that nobody is above indignity. This is a thing a lot of genres do, but epic fantasies seem to be impressively devoid of any sense of humor, and often cave to the temptation to make the villains or heroes so badass that nothing embarrassing or stupid ever happens to them. In Avatar (the last airbender, anyway, haven’t seen Korra), everyone has stupid shit happen to them.  Even Fire Lord Ozai has his moments– “No, Fire Lord Ozai, YOU aren’t wearing pants!” Azula gets covered in mud.  Zuko has… well, getting conked in the head by a boomerang is only the beginning of the stupid undignified shit he experiences. (Though he still doesn’t compare to Sokka, the emperor unto perpetuity of Shameland.) And I love that.  Because in life, sometimes you get covered in mud.  Sometimes you get conked in the head when you’re trying to be brooding and dramatic.  STUPID SHIT HAPPENS TO YOU.  And in real life, you still manage to be badass, or terrible, even in your moments of human frailty. I wish I saw that more often. Yes! This, so much. That’s definitively something I’ve noticed too, and I love it! Actually, in a way, I think it’s kind of addressed in the show itself: Zuko was publicly humiliated, punished and banished for speaking out of turn at a meeting. This was considered a personal offense to the Fire Lord: they were so strict and enamored with their “dignity” that the slightest misstep by a child could turn into some sort of great insult. And if you’re insulted the proper response is to defend your honor in Agni Kai, a duel to the death (with a child if need be). In contrast, among the Air Nomads, it was okay to throw mud pies at the head monks and laugh your ass off. It was even encouraged: creativity, fun and humility were seen as the most essential qualities. No one was above pranks - neither being pranked nor even doing the pranks. And it didn’t mean they didn’t know respect - we know Aang had enormous respect for his elders and their teachings. It’s actually a much truer form of respect than what you could find in the Fire Nation, where fear kept you silent. So, I think there is a lesson here, that maybe we should learn not to hold our dignity in such high regard, that it’s good to know how to laugh at yourself? And when ATLA has fun with its serious characters, it’s also a way to illustrate this idea - the show is all the richer by not taking itself too seriously. : quentyl: lb-lee: avatarsymbolism: Zuko and Mai v Mr. Boomerang. Top badass bei fong: Wellit soundslike a sheet of paper but lquess you are referring to whats on the sheet of paper girl steer the giant arship ha would retu 曺ithE 0 e n thisisvodka beeftony Toph's blindness was one of the most excellently handled aspects of AtLA because it wasn't treated like a disability. So often in shows and especially children's animation) disabled characters are limited to apperances in "very special episodes" where the main characters have to learn a lesson that these people are capable "in spite of" their handicaps, like that episode of Kim Possible wherein Kim constantly stumbles over herself around Felix. This approach is often just as insulting as making them the butt of jokes, because it's patronizing and it limits the amount of roles disabled characters are allowed to have Avatar challenged that stereotype with Teo, and then sent a giant middle finger its way by introducing Toph. She's turned what would otherwise be a disability into an advantage, and she's not afraid to crack jokes about it. She functions well enough that the other characters often forget that she is blind, but at the same time it's an integral part of her bending and allows her to be the greatest earthbender ever. It sends a powerful message that having a disability does not make you less of a person, and often affords you a unique perspective that the so-called "normal" people never get to experience. One of the many reasons I love this show. l've reblogged this before, but I'm reblogging it again. Best character <3 Top badass bei fong
