Being Alone, Chill, and Chris Evans: potofsoup: rainnecassidy: cynics-and-romantics: chris-evans-and-his-pizza: shanology: verysharpteeth: I have to comment on the fact that when it comes to the serum, Bucky is souped UP on that stuff. Steve probably tones back how much he’s hitting normal humans, but GOOD LANDS. Bucky’s not just knocking someone down, he’s getting them air borne. With a kick. We know the cyborg arm is really strong, but BUCKY is insanely strong. Reminds me of the comic where he throws an arrow through someone’s face with his good arm, not even the cyborg one. Bucky is scary ramped up in the strength department. This is why when people talk about Bucky having received an “inferior” version of the serum, I kind of raise my eyebrows. The overall effects of Zola’s serum might have differed from Erskine’s, but it certainly doesn’t seem to have left Bucky physically weaker. There are a lot of fics that assume Bucky would not be a match for Steve if Steve were actually willing to fight him, but Bucky more than proves his strength in Winter Soldier. This should also make people realize that he isn’t some lost puppy. He can take care of hisself, even if he doesn’t have memories. He got the Smithsonian by himself right? He got those clothes himself right? He can take care of himself. He was manipulated to be a predator. He is strong enough, swift enough to take down prey. He is intuitive enough to find who or what he wants. Even before The Soldier, Bucky was smart as a whip and could hold his own in a fight. But now? Now he is the perfect weapon, whether or not he wishes to be. He adapts, he fights, he wins. You know what else bugs me? When people act in fics like he’s just going to snap and kill everyone around him. Bucky is not a violent person. I don’t think the Winter Soldier is a violent person either. He killed because he was ordered to, but if he wasn’t ordered to? TBH I think the Winter Soldier would probably be pretty chill and quiet. Like, you wouldn’t want to startle him or whatever, because yeah, scary ninja personification of death, but if you were just, like, sharing a train car? Or sitting in a waiting room? Not a randomly violent guy. No homicidal urges. Probably largely just wants to be left the fuck alone to, like, contemplate Dostoevsky or something. I recently re-watched Cap2, and this scene — it’s basically Bucky’s equivalent of what Steve did on the Lemurian Star — he takes out a whole squadron (???) of pilots single-handedly. And it’s … stunning how brutallly effective he is. No fancy Cap parkour. Just straight up killing machine. Which I think gets at the above meta/commentary — WS is not just a soldier, he’s a highy trained Super Soldier. He can go toe-to-toe with Steve on basically everything — hand-to-hand combat, leading a team (he leads a team when he’s tracking Nat/Steve), and taking down a large # of machines/men single-handedly. The difference, then, is the drive. Which is that WS has none. He is a ghost that simply follows orders (and when he doesn’t, he gets wiped.) Bucky has no direction, so he goes where he’s pointed. One thing I find so interesting about mcu!WS is how neutral he is. There’s no Soviet brainwashing (we see Pierce giving him The Talk, but he doesn’t seem to actually care), no misguided sense of right or wrong. Just … nothing. Of course, Steve was like that, too, at the beginning of the film — just following orders and muddling through life. But Steve knew enough to be dissatisfied by that, to Want Out. Which is why he’s Steve. And this is one of the larger themes of CA:TWS — it’s about a bunch of highly skilled people who no longer find satisfaction in following orders, and want to find meaning outside of their jobs. Sam did it, Nat and Steve are looking, and Bucky is just starting.

The total firearms murder rate that year was 0.3/100,000. From 1980-1995, Australian firearms deaths dropped from 4.9/100,000-2.6/100,000 without the implementation of firearms laws. This is a rate of decline that has remained fairly constant; Looking at 1996-2014, in which the rate has dropped from 2.6-0.86, it shows that the decline has been slower in a longer period of time since the law’s passing. Likewise, homicides declined more quickly in the 15 years prior to the firearms laws (0.8-0.3) than in the 18 years since it (0.3-0.1). This just indicates that firearms deaths haven’t been noticeably affected by the legislation you’ve claimed has done so much to decrease gun crime.

It should also be noted that around the same time, New Zealand experienced a similar mass shooting, but did not change their existing firearms laws, which remain fairly lax; even moreso than some American states like California, New York, or Connecticut. Despite this, their firearms crime rate has declined fairly steadily as well, and they haven’t experienced a mass shooting since.

The “australia banned guns and now they’re fine” argument is really old and really poorly put together. Gun control is little more than a pink band-aid on the sucking chest wound that is America’s social and economic problems. It’s a ‘quick fix’ issue used by politicians to skirt around solving the roots of the violence problem in the United States, which are primarily poverty, lack of opportunities, and lack of education.

You could ban guns tomorrow nationwide and gun violence and overall violent crime would not be reduced at all.

[this segment brought to you by cerebralzero]

In 2005 the head of the New South Wales Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, Don Weatherburn,[37] noted that the level of legal gun ownership in NSW increased in recent years, and that the 1996 legislation had had little to no effect on violence

In 2006, the lack of a measurable effect from the 1996 firearms legislation was reported in the British Journal of Criminology. Using ARIMA analysis, Dr Jeanine Baker and Dr Samara McPhedran found no evidence for an impact of the laws on homicide.[40]

A study coauthored by Simon Chapman found declines in firearm‐related deaths before the law reforms accelerated after the reforms for total firearm deaths (p=0.04), firearm suicides (p=0.007) and firearm homicides (p=0.15), but not for the smallest category of unintentional firearm deaths, which increased.[43]

Subsequently, a study by McPhedran and Baker compared the incidence of mass shootings in Australia and New Zealand. Data were standardised to a rate per 100,000 people, to control for differences in population size between the countries and mass shootings before and after 1996/1997 were compared between countries. That study found that in the period 1980–1996, both countries experienced mass shootings. The rate did not differ significantly between countries. Since 1996-1997, neither country has experienced a mass shooting event despite the continued availability of semi-automatic longarms in New Zealand. The authors conclude that “the hypothesis that Australia’s prohibition of certain types of firearms explains the absence of mass shootings in that country since 1996 does not appear to be supported… if civilian access to certain types of firearms explained the occurrence of mass shootings in Australia (and conversely, if prohibiting such firearms explains the absence of mass shootings), then New Zealand (a country that still allows the ownership of such firearms) would have continued to experience mass shooting events.”[44]

We see the same trend in The UK.

And Ireland and Jamaica…

And on and on and on… Gun control simply does not create a safer society and often times actually has the opposite effect.

At this point I should also probably point out that Australia’s gun laws have not even reduced gun ownership in Australia. In fact, gun ownership in Australia is actually higher now than in 1996.

All of these inconvenient facts aside, we haven’t even touched on the cost of implementing Australian style gun control in America.

I keep hearing people say that the US should adopt Australia’s gun control policy and I don’t think they have really thought about the big picture of that plan.

Australia had far less guns per person and people in their country did not live in a society that was brought up respecting The 2nd Amendment. The culture of Australia is very different than that of the culture of America when it comes to gun ownership and self defense.

Because of this, the Australian government was able to buy back 631,000 guns at the estimated price of about $500,000,000. You read that correctly, 500 MILLION.

And even after all of that, it still did nothing to prevent violent crime and criminals in Australia still have access to illegal guns, despite being an island country that isn’t bordered by other countries with high violent crime rates and rampant with illegal drug cartels.

There are over 360,000,000 legally owned firearms in America. If we go by Australia’s numbers ($792.39 per gun), these guns would cost our government $285,261,489,698.89 to buy back. Almost 300 BILLION dollars, assuming that every gun owner voluntarily turns in their guns… Which is a very slim to nothing chance.

Who’s going to pay for that? Anti-gunners? I think not.

So, in closing, you want America to put in place gun legislation that will cost the country hundreds of billions of dollars AND has already been proven time and time again to be completely ineffective at protecting innocent lives or creating a safer society?

Seems pretty silly.

Get dunked on, nerd.

Teehee, Mac ‘n’ cheese

Would make it clear that a gv’t buyback has never been on the table. IT WORKS GREAT
sunnysundown:

blackbookalpha:

Taking a break from Gremlin D.Va comics, need to catch up on personal work.

I’ve been looking at a lot of “Mercy Is Evil” theories since I’ve always questioned her design, especially how Overwatch’s concept artists purposely made her into a young, kind-hearted, angelic-looking healer that can do no wrong.

Mercy is possibly an antagonist in Overwatch. If you had the ability to bring people back from the dead, you would never function like a normal human being ever again.

Most doctors in the healthcare field have some level of God complex, surgeons are notoriously well-known for this. When you can fix a person’s body with extreme precision (and get paid a lot of money for it), you tend to become arrogant and have inflated forms of egocentricity and narcissism.

That goes a lot further when a person solves the problem of preventing DEATH itself.

What we know so far:

- Mercy’s motivation to pursue medicine was the death of her parents during the first Omnic crisis. Instead of revenge, she focused on becoming a surgeon, then later made medical breakthroughs that significantly treats life-threatening illnesses and injuries.

- Mercy has achieved a plethora of scientific advancements in applied nanobiology and cybernetics, thanks to Overwatch funding her research. She became the head of their medical research group, healing the injured during the war.

- She is seemingly young-looking despite being 37 years old.

- She was often at odds with her superiors and their goals, which led to allegations where she was later interrogated in court when Overwatch started to crumble from within, highlighting the politics between Morrison and Reyes.

- Mercy was responsible for turning Gabriel Reyes into Reaper, possibly from a failed genetic alteration stated in the Visual Source Book. She’s also the one who brought Genji back from the brink of death without his consent, turning him into a cyborg. Genji hated his new cybernetic body but later found peace after meeting with Zenyatta.

Thoughts:

- Mercy is an advocate of peace and personally dislikes war. Pacifists are often the most dangerous since they create things that deter war entirely. Albert Einstein is a prime example of a pacifist, who later helped develop the Atomic Bomb.

- Mercy disliked Overwatch’s militaristic approach, but joined them since she saw opportunities in advancing her research and personal interests. It’s a doctor’s ultimate dream to work on anything they want that doesn’t follow any conventions, nor bound to the laws of nature or religion.

- Before Overwatch, her research was possibly used by the government in the Soldier Enhancement Program, turning Morrison(S:76) and Reyes(Reaper) and into super soldiers.

- Her young appearance is an extreme form of vanity that contributes to narcissistic traits. We still don’t know what she puts on her body that it physically stops her from aging (possibly from her genetic research that involved human testing)

(Art by @nesskain - who made the official Reinhardt and Pharah comics)

- She fashions her Valkyrie suit in the likeness of an angel, a symbol of peace that also doubles as an outfit for one with a Messiah/Savior complex. People who do this wants to gain people’s trust quickly and convert them into fanatical followers. Valkyries in mythology are also called ‘choosers of the slain’, choosing who lives or who dies in battle.

- Raising the dead is expensive. After seeing Overwatch crumbling from within, Mercy secretly took her research with her, destroyed any traces of it in Overwatch’s HQ (by blowing it up) and possibly found new funding from private corporations and interest groups. She was also not present when their Swiss HQ was destroyed, and possibly used the Morrison/Reyes politics as her scapegoat.

- Reyes was her human guinea pig before she perfected her Resurrection ability through advanced genetic/molecular alteration. Genji was her attempt at creating a well-endowed, cybernetic killing machine. Both had mixed results.

- Mercy’s a master psychologist, forcefully creating living weapons in order to dismantle global threats (saving most for the greater good). In exchange for Genji’s new cyborg body, Genji was tasked by Overwatch to dismantle his own family, after centuries of being in power. The only reason Genji was able to do this was the clan being at weakest without Hanzo’s leadership. Its easy to call this as a Reyes/Reaper tactic, but his methods are more in line of “Getting the job done at all costs”, with little care on how much unnecessary destruction or casualties he’d accumulate during a mission. Mercy’s deal with Genji was a calculated decision, striking a threat with its own kind with surgical precision (and minimal civilian casualties).

- Widowmaker’s blue skin is also a by-product of experimental genetic modification, which parallels Mercy’s line of work (along with creating effective, well-endowed assassasins). Talon was very unsuccessful at assassinating Overwatch agents, until they became brutally efficient by capturing their love ones instead and sending them back as sleeper agents through neural reconditioning.

- She clearly doesn’t want to bring Overwatch back. She has a voice that triggers in Watchpoint: Gibraltar saying “Overwatch was shut down for a reason. Maybe it’s best it stay that way.”

http://overwatch.gamepedia.com/Mercy/Quotes

- Mercy’s “No Pulse” emote has her jokingly checking her vitals, only to find she doesn’t have any.

- Her Devil/Imp skin doesn’t shy away from asking a price when she resurrects fallen heroes.

- Mercy’s possible end game is to prevent the people she loves from dying ever again; being haunted by the death of her parents. Its also the motivating force that drove her to achieve so many medical advancements in a short amount of time. She has a twisted view of saving the majority of mankind; by creating short-term crises that later results into moments of peace. Despite what happens to the world, the rest are just high-paying customers that keep her private life-extension business extremely healthy.

Or… I could be wrong and she’s just a sweet, sinless angel birb mom.

Be nice to Mercy players >:3

i like this Ozymandias-like evil mercy thing

Well, there goes my waifu

That is self-defense. Which is exactly why (along with hunting and sports) that most gun owners own weapons.

Congratulations for showing your stupidity again!

Exodus 22:2-3

Exodus 22:2-3 2 “If the thief is found breaking in, and he is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt for his bloodshed. 3 “If the sun has risen on him, there shall be guilt for his bloodshed.

There are two cases here. In the first case, if someone breaks into your home at night, and you kill him, you are not held guilty of murder. You are not deserving of capital punishment. You do not need to flee to a city of refuge to preserve your life. The understanding is that at night, it is dark, and if someone has invaded your house, they do not announce if they are there merely to steal jewelry and tools. In the dark, you have no way of knowing if someone is coming to kidnap, to rape, or to murder. You are thus blameless if the criminal is killed in that situation. The passage does make it clear that if a man is breaking in at night with the intent of theft or worse (rape, murder, kidnapping, etc.), the defendant can righteously defend himself with lethal force to prevent the commission of the crime).

In the second case, it says “if the sun has risen on him”, and you kill the intruder, you are guilty of his bloodshed. The understanding is that in daytime, there is light, and you can discern the intentions of the home invader. The crime in question here is theft (“if the thief”). It is not legitimate to kill someone who is merely stealing your property. In creating civil laws, we see here that not all crimes are worthy of death.

In the daytime, it is assumed that the intention of the intruder can be discerned. If he is a thief, he may not be killed by the defendant. However, if the intruder is there to commit a different crime—assault, murder, kidnapping, rape, etc.—different laws/rules would apply. Though the crime of theft is not worthy of death, kidnapping was worthy of death (Exodus 21:16, Deut. 24:7) as was murder.

Matthew Henry writes: “…if it was in the day-time that the thief was killed, he that killed him must be accountable for it, unless it was in the necessary defense of his own life. … We ought to be tender of the lives even of bad men; the magistrate must afford us redress, and we must not avenge ourselves.”

Possession of weapons and skills with weapons a good and useful thing

Having looked at a number of passages that deal with weapons and self-defense, let’s spend a little time discussing Scripture’s view of owning weapons and being skilled in their use. The imagery of weapon use and skill at weapons use is often employed in Scripture, and it is often portrayed as a positive or desirable thing. The Lord’s might is something good, and it is often depicted using martial terms (Zec. 9:14, Psa. 7:13, 18:14, 21:12, 64:7, Hab. 3:11, Deu 32:42, 2 Sam 22:15). The Scriptures are a sword (Eph. 6:17; Heb 4:12). A sword comes out of the mouth of Christ (Rev. 1:16, 2:16, 19:15).

Possession of weapons is never discouraged in Scripture. In fact, in 1Sam 13:19ff, it is negatively reported that no spears or swords were found in Israel because of the Philistines:

1 Samuel 13:19-22 9 Now there was no blacksmith to be found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make swords or spears.”… 22 So it came about, on the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan. But they were found with Saul and Jonathan his son.

Let’s look at two verses from the Psalms:

Psalm 144:1 Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:

Psalm 18:34 He teaches my hands to make war, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze

Skill and ability to use weapons here, whether literal and/or metaphorical, is positively portrayed in these verses.

Further, we have accounts of David, not a soldier, not a law enforcement officer, but a youth, employing ranged weapons skillfully (with God’s help) against bears and lions. This is domestic use of lethal weaponry, non-military use, with non-military training. The weapons used by young David are not “kiddie” slingshots. They are powerful enough to kill a bear and lion—in today’s market, we’re talking about a .44 magnum, not a .22, in the hands of someone too young to be in the army.

We might be tempted to think that was just for dealing with animals that could threaten sheep. But aren’t humans worth even more protection than sheep?

We understand that according to Scripture, in matters not of worship or church government, whatever is not forbidden is permitted. I’m not making a claim that ownership of weaponry for the purpose of self-defense is required of the believer. It is not required, but it is permitted by Scripture.

Perspective

Fourthly and finally, keep the right perspective on this. Though we see sanction and even a qualified directive from Christ to possess personal weapons, we must remember three points. First, in the remainder of the New Testament, we have no further examples of believers taking up the sword. Secondly, the emphasis in the remainder of the New Testament is decidedly not geared toward the issues of physical self-defense or righteous use of lethal force. Rather, we see more emphasis on Godly living, suffering affliction and persecution for Christ, and grasping the precious doctrines of Christ and the Gospel. Thirdly, possession of weapons and acquiring the skill to use them in self-defense is permitted but not required by Scripture.

Believers should be conscious that personal self-defense is legitimatized by the Scriptures, just as the use of construction tools, cooking tools, transportation tools are legitimized by Scripture. And these matters of self-defense should hold in our minds and in our affections the same position as those other legitimate, but transitory, matters.

The tendency in some circles is to make the topic of self-defense of primary importance. Though heavenly beings do battle and render judgments with the sword, in the perfection pictured in both the garden of Eden and in the Heavenly city, the primary activities are fellowship with God, fellowship with His people, singing in worship, and living in peace.

That is our destination.

And there ya go. The Biblical explanation in short. The Bible also states that we are to obey the laws of man.

Romans 13:1-5

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience.

You asked for it with your little contrived picture. You got an answer I am sure you will try and construe. Try being the key word.

Check mate. Try again with a new game.

oh snap
