Doctors had told the parents to terminate pregnancy not once but five times. I saw this before some time ago and it just absolutely fascinated me because there was never any other information provided and the little info that was given was tantalizingly vague. Even with 80% of his brain growing surely he had all kinds of severe issues, right? And even if his brain did grow back he might not have lived very long. So I did a little research on him. Everything happened exactly like it says in the pic- the parents were strongly urged to abort the baby five separate times, and they refused all five times, and he was born with two percent of his brain and he does now have 80% of it. What the blurb doesn’t say is that the little boy’s name is Noah Wall and he’s now a very happy, healthy, six year old boy. Doctors said he would be SEVERELY mentally disabled, unable to see, hear, talk, or even eat. The doctors were wrong. He can do all of these things and more. By age two he was sitting up straight and singing; he can play with legos and computer games, he’s learned how to count, he can hold perfectly normal conversations, and he loves painting. He just recently wrote his name for the first time, and he’s trying very hard to learn how to walk (but that’s still a long way off because he’s mostly paralyzed from the waist down). Most of this probably just seems like boring normalcy, but considering he was born with only 2% of his brain he shouldn’t be able to do ANY of this. The fact that he lived beyond his first birthday is a miracle in and of itself. Noah hasn’t had a brain scan since he was three years old, so no one knows if his brain has grown more since then, but all indications are that he’s developing physically at a normal rate, and he’s developing well enough mentally that his parents recently enrolled him in a local elementary school- not any special education classes, a normal, mainstream school. It’s hard work for the parents, there’s tons of medical appointments, regular surgeries with lengthy recovery times, they had to shuttle Noah to a neurophysics center in Australia to help him learn how to sit upright. But they both agree he’s worth it. This is what his mom Shelly has to say:  “I thank him every night before he goes to bed. I say ‘Noah, thank you for such a lovely day. I’ve loved my day.’ And he’ll say ‘I love you, Mummy. Night night.’” https://nypost.com/2019/02/20/boy-born-without-brain-defies-odds-to-live/ https://www.theepochtimes.com/boy-born-with-2-percent-of-brain-defies-odds-learns-to-count-and-surf_2810231.html https://www.cbc.ca/passionateeye/features/the-boy-born-without-a-brain-is-now-a-practical-joker-who-loves-playing-mar I saw a video on him and his parents awhile back and it’s such a happy story. ^^ Just another invalid deformed beyond hope and destined to be a vegetable who should have been killed in the womb, amirite? This really speaks to cases where people think that killing a baby is “the right thing to do” because of probabilities and likelihoods.

Children, Family, and Girls: squ33ble legally-bitchtastic catch-the-ghost monsterkissed here is an idea: normalise the idea that adopting kids is a valid option even for parents who could conceive a child themselves, and not just an inferior backup option for parents who can't Yesterday one of the girls in the unit who's about my age was complaining about her period and expressing a wish for the doctors nearby to "Just take me down to the OR real quick and give me a hysterectomy." Immediately half the nurses (all mothers mind you) start telling her about how she's gonna regret it and she doesn't know yet if she really doesn't want kids, blah blah blalh Anyways, I was walking past so l said, "You know what, you do what you want. If you want end up wanting kids later go adopt some, we've got plenty that get left behind on the second floor [our labor and delivery unit]." All the older nurses shut down so fast and the girl I was talking to suddenly threw up her hands and me and said, "See??? That's what l mean! THANK YOU." NORMALIZE THIS SHIT!! WE REALLY DO HAVE WOMEN COME INTO L&D TO HAVE A BABY AND THEN JUST LEAVE IT HERE AND TAKE OFF. ADOPT!!! Also, don't ask the parents of adopted children if they had fertility problems. That shit is personal. My sister adopted her son and when asked if she is infertile, she likes to ask them what position their children were conceived with, because that's on the same level of appropriateness Like, some people really DO want to experience pregnancy on their own, but that's not the only way to be a parent? On the other hand, some people want kids but DON'T want to be pregnant themselves. Adoption is awesome Birthing a baby is awesome. Hiring a surrogate is awesome. Stop judging parental options, as long as the kids are safe and well taken care of! Family is a choice

Bad, Bailey Jay, and Click: softlyfiercely pervocracy: dysgraphicprogrammer pervocracy: How to hack any hospital computer -Use the password taped to the monitor How to hack any hospital computer (L337 version for advanced security systems) -Use the password taped to the back of the monitor As a computer guy: This is what happens when you have too much security. It reaches a tipping point and then suddenly you have none Security at the cost of convenience comes at the cost of security This is true of so many things in healthcare. Example: our software is designed to automatically alert the doctor if a patient's vital signs are critically out of range. If someone has a blood pressure of 200/130, the doc gets a pop-up box that they have to acknowledge before doing anything else. It makes sense, in our setting But then some mega-genius upstairs realized something: the system was only alerting for critical vital signs, but not for all vital signs that could possibly be bad. Like, yeah, 200/130 is potentially life- threatening, but 130/90 is above ideal and can have negative effects on health. Should the doctors be allowed to just ignore something that could negatively affect a patient's health? Heavens no! So now the system generates a pop-up for any vital signs that are even slightly abnormal. A pressure of 120/80 (once considered textbook normal, now considered slightly high) will create the pop up. We have increased our vigilance! Well, no, what we've actually done is train doctors to click through a constant bombardment of pop-ups without looking. We've destroyed their vigilance and made it much easier for them to accidentally skim past life-threatening vital signs But you can't tell that to management, because you'd have to confess that you are a flawed human with limited attention resources They'd tell you "well, all the other doctors take every abnormal vital sign seriously, it sounds like you're being negligent." And if you're smart, you back down before you start telling the big boss all about your habit of ignoring critical safety alert:s The end result is exactly the same as if we had no alerts at all, except with more annoying clicking this here is an absolutely fascinating overview of how and why this happens A fascinating look at the intersection of technology and healthcare, and how we still have a lot to figure out

Children, Dude, and Fucking: mycravatundone a girl i know told me how a guy she knows once moved out from his parents ate nothing but fries and meatballs for HALF A YEAR, and got scurvy. imagine the doctor's face when this guy shows up with like his gums bleeding and the doc has to fucking say DUDE.... THATS SCURVY.... in this day and age mycravatundone this is turning into a "how a person i know got scurvy" thread and im so here for this, please share your scurvy stories if you have any aquarianconstellations the other day someone posted pics from the reddit page r/zerocarbs where these fools only ate meat and 0 vegetables or fruits and all the posts were about various symptoms of scurvy. i died when one literally read 'i don't want to start the vitamin C debate again but mycravatundone THE VITAMIN C DEBATE elidyce My mother told me all about scurvy when I was five and trying to resist eating pumpkin and let me tell you it's been 35 years and I still get nervous if i go for two days without eating a green vegetable I told my own little picky eater about scurvy, rickets etc and now one of her most frequently requested lunch items is baby spinach, closely followed by carrots I'm not saying everyone should mildly traumatize their children to make them understand that vegetables are vital to ongoing possession of your teeth and organs, but.. no, that's exactly what I'm saying. Go for it. ariadne83 some guys i used to know went on a boys only road trip. they decided they were only going to eat things they could cook on the engine block of the car two of them got scurvy. one of them drank so much jagermeister + red bull that he temporarily lost the ability to see in colour. dexvoarn im sorry he what now Eat yer veggies
