Child Support, Fail, and Jail: Jay-Z and Roc Nation to Invest $3 Million in App That Combats Mass Incarceration @balleralert Jay-Z and Roc Nation to Invest $3 Million in App That Combats Mass Incarceration-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Jay-Z and Roc Nation will reportedly make a $3 million investment in an app called Promise, that combats mass incarceration. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ According to the website, the app was created by Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins and Diana Frappier to “get people out of jail and provide ongoing support and supervision to help keep them out.” The hope is that the platform will exist as an alternative to incarcerating individuals who cannot afford bail or who miss court dates by mistake. It will provide services to users that will help them log upcoming court dates, counseling appointments, and drug tests. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ When it comes to rehabilitation, Promise plans to provide programs to users that assist with job training and getting information about housing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ As a rapper, Jay-Z has used his platform to consistently speak about how the jail system is designed to fail those of low class and people of color. Last year the rapper wrote an opinion piece on Father’s Day about the exploitative bail industry. For many individuals, they are jailed due to their inability to afford bail, despite not being convicted of crimes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ During an interview with TechCrunch, Ellis-Lamkins spoke on the small infractions that lead to many people of color ending up behind bars. “People are going to jail because they look at a piece of paper and misread it, or are going to jail because they can’t afford a class because they’re instead paying child support. If we’re putting people in jail because they’re poor, brown or black, we’re spending money the wrong way.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “We are increasingly alarmed by the injustice in our criminal justice system,” Jay-Z said in a statement confirming his involvement with the app. “Money, time and lives are wasted with the current policies. It’s time for an innovative and progressive technology that offers sustainable solutions to tough problems. Promise’s team, led by Phaedra, is building an app that can help provide ‘liberty and justice for all’ to millions.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀

Apparently, Bad, and Facetime: HERE LIES THE INTERNET 1969 212 2 NET NEUTRALITY UPDATE cornsnoot: sassy-in-glasses: staff: 🚨 The internet needs you 🚨 You’re up again, Tumblr.  Back in 2015 you demanded that the FCC adopt strict net neutrality rules and establish a free and open internet. And you won.  That should’ve been the end of it. But apparently not. The new head of the FCC wants to undo the net neutrality protections you fought so hard for. His proposed changes open the door to your web traffic being slowed down, or even blocked altogether. You could be forced to pay extra to use your favorite apps. You could even be prevented from getting news from the sources you trust. Title II protects consumers and democracy by ensuring all voices can be heard. You know the drill. Here’s what to do: The FCC is taking comments from the public, and dearfcc.org is making it as simple as possible for you to make your voice heard. Go there now 👉 dearfcc.org ✌️ You’ll just need to provide a name, an address, and then say a little bit about why rolling back Title II protections is a bad idea. If you’re not quite sure what to write, here’s something to get you started: I’m writing to urge you to keep our Open Internet rules based on Title II in place. Without them, we could lose the internet as we know it. The proposed changes to FCC rules would allow fast lanes for sites that pay, and force everyone else into slow lanes. We’ve already seen access to streaming services like Netflix, popular games like League of Legends, and communication platforms like FaceTime slowed down, or even blocked. Conditions like this hurt businesses large and small, and penalize the users who patronize them.  The changes also open the door to unfair taxes on internet users, and could also make it harder for blogs, nonprofits, artists, and others who can’t pay up to have their voices heard. Please leave the existing net neutrality rules based on Title II in place. Thank you! If you need more ammo, feel free to quote these experts from our net neutrality Issue Time. TechCrunch and Battle for the Net also have some good starters. Everyone is counting on everyone else here. Do your part and tell the FCC to keep a free and open internet under Title II.  THE ONE TIME I AGREE WITH @staff alright I’ve been hesitant to reblog a net neutrality post to my snake blog but fuck, even staff is on this boat, I hope it comes across as important

Memes, E-40, and Opera: Aaedika Nisso? Series A funding is the first round of financing a startup receives when it does not require seed money. In this round, investors may take a 30% to 50% stake in the company. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ TechCrunch reported that Uncharted Play plans to use the new round of funding to expand its staff and finance future partnerships. The company's main products are a soccer ball that doubles as a generator and a jump rope that doubles as a light. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Matthews' venture deal is significant in an industry where Black women on average received only $36,000 in outside funding between 2012 to 2014, according to a report by ProjectDiane.
