Black History Month, Dancing, and England:
Black history month day 19: Dancer Master Juba

Master Juba was born around 1825, likely to free blacks in Providence, Rhode Island. He was a minstrel dancer active in the 1840s, and one of the first black performers in the United States to play onstage for white audiences and be a member of a white minstrel group. His real name was believed to be William Henry Lane, and he was also known as “Boz’s Juba” following a description of him by Charles Dickens, who wrote about the dancer in his travelogue “American Notes“.

Details of his early life are scant but it is believed that he grew up in a slum that was the home to Irish immigrants and free blacks. The Irish and black communities frequently shared their culture with one another, leading to various dance steps and jigs and musical styles. Many blacks would perform in the local brothels and saloons or on the street corners for change.

Eventually Juba was discovered by PT Barnum and Barnum got him into the minstrel business by disguising him as white minstrel by putting him in blackface. At a later date his race became clear but he still often performed in blackface, and was well known as the boy who beat famed white performer Joe Diamond in a dancing contest. At the time black performer being publicly confirmed as better than white man at anything was unheard of.

Though Juba had success in the United States, he actually became most popular in England.

Definitely, Football, and Friday: Two Texas Teens Kicked Off Football Team for Kneeling During Anthem @balleralert 4 18 Two Texas Teens Kicked Off Football Team for Kneeling During Anthem-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Two Texas high school football players were kicked off the team after protesting the national anthem during a game Friday night. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ At Friday night's game, Cedric Ingram-Lewis raised his fist while his cousin, Larry McCullough, knelt during the anthem before their game against Providence Classical. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ After the anthem, head coach Ronnie Mitchem instructed the teens to take off their uniforms and terminated their participation with the team. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Ingram-Lewis, a sophomore at Victory and Praise Christian Academy, a private school in Crosby, Texas, said the idea to protest had came up in the locker room before the game. The coach had already told players he did not want anyone to kneel, due to his own participation in the military. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ "He told us that disrespect will not be tolerated," Lewis said, recalling the moment after the anthem. "He told us to take off our uniform and leave it there." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Lewis' mother, Rhonda Brady, says she supports her son and nephew's decision to protest. She also says she was surprised by the coach's reaction. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ "I'm definitely going to have a conversation because I don't like the way that was handled," Brady said. "But I don't want them back on the team. A man with integrity and morals and ethics and who truly lives by that wouldn't have done anything like that." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Mitchem says he does not regret kicking the boys off the team, as they left him with no choice. He encouraged the players to protest, but in a different way like kneeling after a touchdown in the end zone or spreading word about the issue through writing.

Bodies , Driving, and Energy: Knee Stabilit The ability to keep the knees in direct alignment with the foot (minimizing any side-to-side movement) SOU AT UMIVERSITY Ideally the knee should track in the exact same position during the entire squat. Here's a great example of an athlete @max_lang_weightlifting with optimal knee stability (squatting 170kg - 374lbs for 10 reps). The knees of some athletes waver slightly (often moving inward toward the toes) on the ascent of the squat, or even worse cave-in completely (called a valgus collapse). The longer an athlete has been lifting with this type of poor movement - the harder it is to break the habit. If they move this way for too long - it becomes a crutch and they unfortunately need to move that way in order to keep lifting as much weight. While a slight knee waver isn’t a horrible technique error it is NOT optimal from a mechanical standpoint. This means improved knee control (less side to side movement) will give you the potential to lift more weight. The knees were designed to bend and straighten - any Lateral movement during the squat is only wasted energy that could be used to drive more weight up! Lifting heavy weights poorly will make you stronger. However, it will make you stronger in the WRONG WAY by reinforcing poor technique. In the end - moving big weight poorly will lead to pain. It's time to teach our athletes that it doesn’t matter how MUCH they can squat, if they can’t squat WELL. While technique perfection is something most of us will never achieve, we should always strive to attain it. __________________________________ Squat University is the ultimate guide to realizing the strength to which the body is capable of. Happy Valentine,s dequanmjones Since we're writing letters and stuff, Ifelt like a response was warranted. Yesterday morning I sent my wife a screenshot of someone who had taken the time to photoshop her face into our picture. We laughed about how funny (and creepy) it was and created a side by side to share with our friends. It was all kicks and giggles until the post surprisingly went viral and people started saying rude things about both my wife and the young lady in the comments. At the end of the day, think it's clear that everyone was joking and that it was all meant to be some Valentine's Day humor. We're glad we could provide some entertainment for y all even though it was never meant to be that deep. Clearly social media is a powerful thing. Memes, Protest, and History: Fla. High School Students Protest to Make African-American History a Full-Year Course TERRY PAR KER H I G H SCHOOL 7thsoulja4 Students at Terry Parker High School in Jacksonville, Fla., staged a sit-in earlier this week demanding a change in the way African-American history is taught in Duval County Public Schools, Action News Jax reports. The organizer of the sit-in, Angelina Roque, said that she and her other classmates wanted to protest because they believed that African-American history is a topic that deserves a full year of class time, which will in turn benefit all of their classmates. Students and their parents met with administrators Tuesday to discuss the topic. According to Action News Jax, the course is currently offered only as a semester-long, or half-year, course.Roque, a 10th-grader, told the news station that the protest was to "make them hear us, make them see us, make them listen to us." She was one of about 10 or so other students who called for a change. “[The other students] risked being in trouble over a cause that we all truly think more people should be concerned about,” Roque said. Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said that the students who raised the issue of the way the class is being taught will not be disciplined. “Historically, Terry Parker and other high schools in Duval County has offered the course, but as a half-credit, not as a full credit … we will, and are certainly willing to offer it as a full-year course starting in the fall," Vitti said. "I respect that students demonstrated self-advocacy ‎and used their voice to signal concerns about their education. If there is student demand for a full-credit and yearlong African-American-history course, then we should and will provide it to students. We will work through the process of developing and offering that course.”Action News Jax investigated how other neighboring school districts taught African-American history to compare. In Clay County, African-American history is currently offered as a half-credit, semester-long elective, the same as in Duval. In St. Johns County, schools offer a different course, African-American literature, which is a yearlong elective course. “Being able to have a full course of African-American history … that will honestly make a big difference. 17thsoulja
