Memes, Boost, and Curtains: HH NEWS R50 VWW Volkswagen Has Teased The Golf R Performance Pack That Will Take The Fight To The New Civic Type R Via @carthrottlenews - Previewed on Volkswagen’s own YouTube channel, the hottest version of the seventh generation Golf has been released and updated through brake and suspension upgrades. The Golf R Performance Pack features adjustable shock absorbers, drilled brake discs and upgraded pads to make it that bit more hardcore, but power and torque go unchanged from its 2.0-litre turbocharged unit. That means 310bhp and 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds using a Haldex four-wheel drive system as a helping hand. - The Golf R has however received a 12bhp boost in its recent facelift, bringing it just 6bhp short of the new Civic Type R. Although the Performance Pack doesn’t build on power, top speed has managed to increase to 166mph compared to the current 155mph limit. Also, a new titanium exhaust system saves 7kg and should increase the bark made by the four-pot engine. - The Performance Pack uses the ‘air curtain’ implemented by the standard Golf R as seen in the promotional video. It uses new front air intakes and side skirts to optimise aerodynamic efficiency as well as a small rear lip spoiler which apparently adds 20kg of downforce once up and running. A rear diffuser also doubles as a housing for the exhaust tips. - With the hyper hatch sector getting more and more crowded in recent times, it seems that Volkswagen is making sure its headline Golf is staying competitive with the likes of the Ford Focus RS and Civic Type R. Sadly, it is not clear whether the Performance Package will be sold in the UK but it will be available soon for the continental European market.

Memes, 🤖, and Arch: NEWS Audi ha revealed a facelifted RS3, packing the updated 2.5-litre inline-five fromthe RS3 Saloon and TT RS Via @carthrottlenews - Audi’s stonkingly fast RS3 quietly went out of production part way through last year, but now it’s back with a (slightly) new face and a new heart. - The ‘heart’ in question is the overhauled 2.5-litre, turbocharged inline-five first seen in the TT RS and the incoming RS3 saloon, putting out 395bhp and 354lb ft - an increase of 33bhp and 11lb ft when compared to the old car. - It’s a lighter engine, shedding 33kg over the old unit thanks to an aluminium crankcase, among other things. There’s a new dual injection system too, plus a valvelift feature “for moderate fuel consumption at low and partial load as well as more spontaneous throttle response and a high level of tractive power at full load.” Lovely. - With its newfound power, the four-wheel drive RS3 Sportback will hit 62mph from rest in just 4.1 seconds - 0.1sec quicker than a Mercedes-AMG A45 and bang on the time of the RS3 saloon. The top speed mirrors the saloon too: it’s the usual 155mph electronic limiter, which can be bumped up to 174mph should you tick the right option box. - Compared to a boggo A3 Sportback the suspension is 25mm lower, with the track by 20mm at the front and the wheel arches flared to suit. The brake discs are 370mm whoppers at the front with eight piston callipers, with 310mm rotors squeezed by monoblock callipers at the rear. If you want posh carbon ceramics rotors, those are optional. - On the inside, you might notice the presence of Audi’s virtual cockpit system, which found its way into the rest of the A3 range last year. You might also notice the automatic gear selector: sorry guys, like the last RS3, it’s powered by a seven-speed ‘S Tronic’ dual-clutch transmission only. - The car will make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

Memes, Reuters, and 🤖: NEws VW's Boss Has Declared That Downsizing ls Dead Via @carthrottlenews - When first perusing the press release for the facelifted VW Golf late last year, the first thing we noticed wasn’t the GTI’s power boost, nor the autonomous-ish tech. No, it was the new 1.5-litre TSI ‘Evo’ engine. - It’s a replacement for the old 1.4, so it represents something of an oddity in today’s downsize crazy car industry: an upsized engine. And it’s something we can expect a lot more of. When we queried the increase in capacity with VW chairman Dr. Herbert Diess at the refreshed Golf’s launch this week, he confidently declared that: “The trend of downsizing is over.” The reason is simple, with Dr. Diess adding: “Emissions tend to go up as engines get smaller.” - While it’s significant for a major industry figure for Diess to admit this, it’s not a surprise. It’s clear from real-world economy figures that while downsizing works jolly nicely on paper thanks to the highly unrealistic NEDC testing cycle, smaller turbo engines just don’t deliver anything like MPG and emissions figures they’re supposed to. - All this follows a report in Reuters last October, citing industry sources that indicated VW and other manufacturers are planning to scrap or increase the capacity of some of their smallest engines. The same report also mentioned Renault’s 0.9-litre H4Bt actually injects excess amounts of petrol to stop it overheating, for example, which is so stupidly wasteful it’s almost funny. - In the case of VW, what’s interesting is that while Dr. Diess concedes “displacements will go up,” he reckons the firm’s dinky 1.0-litre turbo three-pot is safe for now. “We will offer a three-cylinder 1.0-litre which is a very competent engine, but we don’t see any engines below that anymore,” he said. - The world of small engines is set to get quite interesting over the next few years.

Memes, Euro, and Curtains: HH NEWS MUSTANG 2016 FORD CENf612 Ford Mustang Records Shock Two-Star Euro NCAP Safety Score Via @carthrottlenews - The Ford Mustang has been given a totally unexpected two-star safety rating by Euro NCAP. It’s the first car from a major manufacturer to score so low for almost a decade, and it’s not ideal for something that’s not that likely to make it to the end of its life without being crashed at least once. - The punishing Euro NCAP tests showed up major issues with airbags not protecting occupants properly, rear passengers slipping beneath seat belts and a lack of active safety technology like autonomous braking systems. - For comparison, the Dacia Sandero scored four of out five stars. In 2013. - In the frontal offset impact test, neither of the front airbags inflated enough to fully protect the occupants, and in the side impact test the ‘10-year-old’ dummy’s head actually squashed right through the under-inflated curtain airbag and hit the door trim. - Thatcham Research’s Director of Research, Matthew Avery, even went as far as to say that the test result “makes it unsuitable for carrying rear passengers.” - “On top this, it does not have basic life-saving technology like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) that is available even on the Ford Fiesta, and the recently launched Ford Edge,” he said. - Ford has countered with assertions that the facelifted model, to be released in Europe later this year, will score higher. The newer model will have pre-collision assist and lane-keeping assist as standard. - If you already own one, though, you might want to avoid driving into anything solid.

Memes, Porsche, and Chiefs: HH NEWS RX15 PZF Porsche Is Reportedly Cooking Up A 4.0-litre Cayman GT4 RS Via @carthrottlenews - As much as we love the Porsche Cayman GT4, you still get the nagging sense it was held back ever so slightly. - Here was a Cayman that had at last been given the engine it deserves, in the form of the 3.8-litre flat six from the 911 Carrera S. But Porsche still chose to knock 10bhp off the output before dropping it into the Cayman, as some sort of reminder that the 911 is top dog, despite the ‘lesser’ car having the optimum mid-engine layout. But no matter, as Porsche is apparently about to make A Cayman that’s even more powerful. - According to reports in both Auto Express and Autocar, the incoming, facelifted 911 GT3 - which will have a manual gearbox option, by the way - will use the 4.0-litre flat-six seen in the GT3 RS and R, potentially with the same 493bhp if not more. So what has that got to do with the Cayman? Well, both publications are also reporting that - according to their sources - that same 4.0-litre flat-six will make it into a Cayman ‘GT4 RS’. - Porsche admits the previous GT4 was far more popular than expected, so a follow-up of sorts makes sense. And with the 718 Cayman S being considerably quicker than its predecessor, a GT4 RS is going to need a lot of poke to sufficiently elevate it from the rest of the range. - 718 powertrain chief Matthias Hofstetter told us last year that packaging restrictions would make installing the 911 Carrera’s new turbocharged straight-six impossible without massive changes, so the retuned RS 4.0-litre N-A makes sense. It wouldn’t have as much power as the GT3 and GT3 RS of course, since that’d cause all sorts of problems for the track-focused 911s. But, if it gets the 430 or so bhp figure speculated by Autocar, it’d do what the last GT4 didn’t: go beyond the Carrera S in terms of power. - A small Cayman with a really sorted chassis and a screaming 4.0-litre engine? Assuming this all happens, that’ll be one hell of a car.

Dodge Challenger, Memes, and Monster: HH NEWS The 50th Anniversary Shelby Super Snake Mustang IS A 740bhp Monster Via @carthrottlenews - It’s been a pretty big week for shouty American cars with V8s. We had the news about the Ford Mustang facelift, more details emerging about the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and now this: the 50th Anniversary Shelby Super Snake Mustang. - As with the last Super Snake Mustang from Shelby American, the 50th Anniversary car straps a supercharger to the familiar 5.0-litre Coyote V8 to push the eight-cylinder anger well beyond 600bhp. It’s good for 660bhp in ‘standard’ guise, although if you tick the right options (which you absolutely should), that jumps to 740bhp. Lovely. - Thankfully, Shelby hasn’t just chucked a load of power to the rear wheels and left it at that. The 50th also gets upgraded brakes in the form of six-piston front-four-piston rear callipers from Wilwood, along with a new ducting to keep them cool. - The suspension has been given a thorough working over with new dampers, springs, anti-roll bars and bushes, while the exterior has been treated to a whole host of angrier body parts. Plus a smattering of 50th Anniversary badges, obviously. - Naturally this doesn’t come cheap: the total cost including the standard Mustang donor car comes to $69,995, before you tick that 740bhp option. But for a proper Shelby-tuned pony car with a silly power output and an enviable parts list, perhaps that’s not so bad.

Digital Dash, Memes, and Pressure: HH NEW The 2018 Ford Mustang ls Here, With New Tech But No V6 Via @carthrottlenews - We’ve had a little time to get used to the sixth-gen Mustang’s new look thanks to a leak earlier today, but now Ford has given the refreshed pony its full reveal. - So, what’s new? Quite a lot, it turns out. For starters there’s the redesigned front end that’s already the talk of the Internet, plus the new hood scoops, rear light bars and rear wing. But the changes are more than skin deep, with Ford festooning the Mustang with a lot more tech than it had previously. - We’ve always found the Mustang’s suspension to be lacking finesse, but that’s now been addressed with ‘MagnaRide’ adaptive dampers, available with the Performance Pack. Next up on the menu is the optional active exhaust, which will let you decide exactly how shouty the GT version’s 5.0-litre V8 is. - In the cabin meanwhile, you’ll find that the old physical dials are gone. They’re replaced with an all-new digital dash centred around 12-inch LCD screen. - In addition to the optional adaptive dampers, all models get new shock absorbers, a new cross-axis joint at the rear and new stabiliser bars. According to Ford, all that should “bring sharper response and handling.” - In terms of engine line-up, the big news is that the 3.7-litre V6 is no more. The range now consists of only the 2.3-litre Ecoboost and 5.0-litre V8 GT, with the latter engine receiving a few tweaks. It revs higher and is more powerful (although Ford hasn’t said by how much) thanks to a new high-pressure fuel injection system. - If you found the pre-facelift car’s colour pallette a little lacking, we have good news. The facelift brings the choice of more colours, plus 12 different wheel designs. Lovely. - Finally, the last big change for the Mustang is the new optional 10-speed automatic gearbox. It’s available on both the Ecoboost and GT, and comes with a set of steering wheel-mounted paddles. - The refreshed Mustang will be on sale in North America this autumn, arriving in Europe some time after.
