13 MAR: During the huge peatland fires of 2015 in central Kalimantan, Indonesia, more than 800,000 hectares of forest was burnt. But one a small island of lush green trees was saved. This was the work of Januminro Bunsal, a native Dayak man. By carefully constructing wells lining the perimeter, doing social media fundraising and setting up a network of fire lookouts communicating via SMS, Januminro and his local community managed to save his home forest from the inferno surrounding it. This community-based project is poised to expand nationwide and help tackle the urgent problem of forest fire haze in South East Asia.
