Costco, Gif, and Tumblr: COSTCOSCEO EXPLAINSHOW THEYMAKE RECORDPROFITS "WE PAY WORKERS $45K/YEAR, PROVIDE HEALTH INSURANCE, AND LET THEM UNIONIZE THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT WALMART DOES."
runningrepublican:

It’s amazing that people try to compare the two. When you’re essentially in an apples and oranges situation.

Wal-Mart is a retail store while Costco is a wholesale store. This means that the businesses are structured in entirely different ways. Your average Wal-Mart Employee is paid at $12.83 per hour. While the average wage at Costco is $21 per hour. Now if we assume the companies workers have equal productivity, equal sales, equal revenue, and equal operating costs, then sure, Wal-Mart is being exploitative… but the thing is they don’t.

Below is a chart which explains the differences in operations between Costco and Walmart.

Wal-mart employs far more people who have a much lower productivity. Costco employs less because they’re essentially a warehouse. They have lower operating costs, higher worker productivity and more profit per worker. It’s because their workers generate more revenue that the workers can earn higher wages. It’s not because of the generosity of the company, but because the workers can actually do more at costco.

“Wal-Mart Discount Stores average 107,000 square feet, employ an average of 225 associates and offer 120,000 items.”

“But Cotsco’s CEO supports a higher minimum wage”

That’s because he already pays far above the minimum wage. Nothing happens to his company or his employees if it’s raised, however smaller competitors that can not afford to pay higher wages are harmed by the increase. He’s acting out of his own self interest, not for the well-being of others.

Can we all just take a moment to appreciate an informed post about this? Not just “asdfghjkl Walmart is evil raise minimum wage to $15 lolz”
