Good Knight Gothamites! Tomorrow we will continue "50 Tales for 50 Years: A Celebration of Barbara Gordon" with our last 3 stories! Earlier in our session (2 posts back) we discussed Kyle Higgins' 2014 story "Older Wounds" that shed light on the romantic affair between Bruce Wayne and Barbara Gordon. In 2016's DC Animated Film "Batman: The Killing Joke" as a prelude to the telling of Alan Moore's graphic novel, we see Bruce and Barbara in what is now deemed a "controversial" sex scene. While I make light of this scene with an account edit using art from @BossLogic's (Bosslogicinc.com) hilarious condom series "Safety First", executive producer Bruce Timm discussed in an interview the thought process him, screenplay writer Brian Azzarello and producer Alan Burnett had while wanting to explore this dynamic: "It was really important to us to show that both of the characters make some pretty big mistakes...so it's very human; it's a very understandable story." What are your thoughts on Batman and Batgirl's relationship in this animated film and did this portion of Barbara's prequel story help or hinder your experience watching this highly anticipated adaptation? "50 Tales for 50 Years: A Celebration of Barbara Gordon" - 2014: Older Wounds: In the mainstream continuity of Batman comics since Batgirl's debut in Detective Comics 359, the dynamic between Bruce Wayne and Commissioner Gordon's daughter has been platonic. However, in other alternate timelines, such as the animated Batman Beyond television universe created by Bruce Timm and even the extended comic book universe of this future Gotham, it is shown that Bruce and Barbara have had a romantic companionship. In the Batman Beyond comic universe, both Bruce and Barbara's dynamic and the falling out between Dick Grayson and Batman are explored in @KyledHiggins and Alec Siegel's Batman Beyond 2.0 issue 28, illustrated by Phil Hester, Eric Gapstur and Craig Rousseau. As part of the Mark of the Phantasm arc, Terry McGinnis is told about the time when Dick Grayson returns from Bludhaven to Gotham City and the romantic flame between him and Babs reignites. Come to Barbara's surprise, however, she is 7 weeks pregnant but it can't be Grayson's child; he has only been back to Gotham for 3 weeks. Barbara visits Bruce in the Batcave who asks why she hasn't been around for a while. Barbara tells Bruce she's pregnant with his child with his reaction being he wants to stay out of breaking the news to Dick. This quickly changes when Bruce talks to Dick anyway, confesses that while he was gone from Gotham he had an affair with Barbara and now she's pregnant. Enraged and hurt, as Dick gets into a fist fight with Bruce, Barbara is in an alley trying to stop a mugging when she gets hit in the stomach and falls to the ground, ending in her losing the baby by miscarriage. In an interview with DC Comics after this story originally was released, Higgins stated "From Barbaraโ€™s standpoint, itโ€™s like trying to date your ex-boyfriendโ€™s brother. Or, from Bruceโ€™s standpoint, your brotherโ€™s ex-girlfriend. Itโ€™s not exactly a healthy move. Of course, thatโ€™s what makes it so interesting." โœŒ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ“–๐ŸŽจ๐ŸŽ‰: THINGS REALLY WERE PERFECT." HISTORY OFT HEBATMAN I'M ILL HAVE TO CONGRATULATE SEVEN WEEKS DICK. "50 Tales for 50 Years: A Celebration of Barbara Gordon" - 2007: No Joke: Throughout the years, as the guise Oracle, Barbara Gordon would have flashbacks to the day Joker struck her down. As the years went on in DC Comics, Barbara's paralysis became a thing of destiny. In Geoff John's 2007 Booster Gold (Vol 2) issue 5 story "No Joke", illustrations by Dan Jurgens and Norm Rapmund (cover art presented), Booster is sent back over and over to stop Barbara from being shot, but fails every time. In the end, Rip Hunter is informed by Batman that Booster would always fail this mission because this fate was meant for Barbara. A few years later, in Michael Straczynski's 2010 story "Ladies Night" in The Brave and the Bold (Vol 3) 33, Zatanna and Wonder Woman struggle to come to terms with the impending attack on Barbara after Zatanna has a precognitive dream about it. These tales, although hurtful to members of the DC Universe, illustrate that Barbara's tragedy was meant for her to become greater than she could have possibly imagined. โœŒ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ“–๐ŸŽจ๐ŸŽ‰: ใ— ใƒผใ‚บ "50 Tales for 50 Years: A Celebration of Barbara Gordon" - 2007: No Joke: Throughout the years, as the guise Oracle, Barbara Gordon would have flashbacks to the day Joker struck her down. "50 Tales for 50 Years: A Celebration of Barbara Gordon" - 2005: Batgirl Begins: In September 2004, a new Batman centric animated show aired on Kids' WB called 'The Batman', created by Michael Goguen and Duane Capizzi. 'The Batman' follows Bruce Wayne in his apparent 3rd year of being Batman in Gotham City, juggling between fighting colorful villains such as The Joker and Penguin and being a playboy billionaire in his early 20s. Not set within the first DC Animated Universe created by Paul Dini, Bruce Timm, Alan Burnett and others, 'The Batman' featured character designs by Japanese-American concept artist Jeff Matsuda. While keeping the same values the Caped Crusader, his allies and infamous rogues gallery sustained over several decades, Matsuda gave a sleek re-design that still presented a mysterious crime drama for a younger audience to appreciate. The original Batgirl returned to the small animated screen in this series, debuting in the two part episode "Batgirl Begins", originally debuting in September 2005. When Barbara Gordon's (voiced by Danielle Judovits) father, Commissioner Gordon, is tied up in the thorny clutches of environmentalist Pamela Isley aka Poison Ivy, Barbara transforms into the new young vigilante Batgirl in order to save her father and stop her friend. While Batman is reluctant to seek help from this new crime fighter and does his best for Batgirl to not deduce that Bruce Wayne and Batman are one in the same, throughout the series Batgirl cements her place within the Batman Family. โœŒ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ“–๐ŸŽจ๐ŸŽ‰: AMAN "50 Tales for 50 Years: A Celebration of Barbara Gordon" - 2005: Batgirl Begins: In September 2004, a new Batman centric animated show aired on Kids' WB called 'The Batman', created by Michael Goguen and Duane Capizzi. Yesterday in our session "50 Tales for 50 Years: A Celebration of Barbara Gordon" we covered Alan Moore's one shot graphic novel "Batman: The Killing Joke". One of the reasons this comic is so memorable is the fact that the Joker shoots Barbara Gordon, unknowing to him Batgirl, ultimately paralyzingly her from the waist down. At the time, even Moore himself believed the acts of Joker shooting and undressing Barbara was extreme for comic books. In recent news, Bolland's original art illustrated photos of a completely naked Barbara, with the exposure of her breasts, giving critics the illusion that Joker sexually assaulted her as well. In years to come, Barbara would be listed in Gail Simone's "Women in Refrigerators" list, one that has important female characters to superheroes either injured or killed as a plot device; Barbara's tragedy was not the main storyline, but a pawn in the grand scheme of Joker's origin and the defining of insanity between him and Batman. Many saw her paralysis negatively when the book was published in March 1988. Even creators such as Alex Ross and Paul Dini wanting to have a story where she is cured by a Lazarus Pit in the later future. However, the vulgarity in these panels made Barbara Gordon the metaphorical phoenix of DC; to assure she would not end up in complete obscurity, creators John Ostrander and Kim Yale gave Barbara a new persona, the genius computer hacker Oracle, who became one of the most important figures for heroes in the DC Universe until The New 52 reboot in late 2011 (Rafael Albuquerque's cancelled variant cover to 2015's Batgirl 41 presented). We will have more tales of Barbara in her role as Oracle as we continue our retrospect. โœŒ๐Ÿผ๏ธ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ“–๐ŸŽจ๐ŸŽ‰: 41 st: Yesterday in our session "50 Tales for 50 Years: A Celebration of Barbara Gordon" we covered Alan Moore's one shot graphic novel "Batman: The Killing Joke".
