MIT news article on the image and the team: http://news.mit.edu/2019/mit-haystack-first-image-black-hole-0410 From the article: An international team of over 200 astronomers, including scientists from MIT’s Haystack Observatory, has captured the first direct images of a black hole. They accomplished this remarkable feat by coordinating the power of eight major radio observatories on four continents, to work together as a virtual, Earth-sized telescope. In a series of papers published today in a special issue of Astrophysical Journal Letters, the team has revealed four images of the supermassive black hole at the heart of Messier 87, or M87, a galaxy within the Virgo galaxy cluster, 55 million light years from Earth. … The Haystack EHT team includes John Barrett, Roger Cappallo, Joseph Crowley, Mark Derome, Kevin Dudevoir, Michael Hecht, Lynn Matthews, Kotaro Moriyama, Michael Poirier, Alan Rogers, Chester Ruszczyk, Jason SooHoo, Don Sousa, Michael Titus, and Alan Whitney. Additional contributors were MIT alumni Daniel Palumbo, Katie Bouman, Lindy Blackburn, Sera Markoff, and Bill Freeman, a professor in MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. She’s listed as an “additional contributor.”  Topkek. reblogging because ive seen katie boumans name several times but this is the first time ive heard about andrew chael. he deserves to be recognized. 850k lines of code is no joke.

We do not have the funds to buy the class sets of books ourselves. We need our community's help to afford these books. These books will help us create lesson plans that are culturally accessible to our students as well as engaging. The novel "The Hate U Give" is a story that our students are all too familiar with at Savannah High school and we want them to be able to see themselves in the literature we teach. Through being able to see themselves in the novel, we hope to be able to teach them and inspire them. enenkaydoodles: enenkaydoodles: My friend Martha is a teacher at a low-income school that’s short on funds and resources. She’s trying to raise money to buy 2 sets of “The Hate U Give“ for her classroom. So far, the project has raised $200 and needs $600 total. Every little bit counts, so please check out her project, and consider supporting education! PS: If you donate $20 or more, send me a screenshot of your donation and I’ll personally doodle you a random thank you drawing! The project is only $168 away from goal! LET’S DO THIS!!

Africa, Bad, and Comfortable: lubricates: kemetic-dreams: Nigerians Are Building Fireproof, Bulletproof, And Eco-Friendly Homes With Plastic Bottles And Mud By Editorial_Staff -Nov 23, 2015 AFRICANGLOBE  – These colorful homes are bulletproof, fireproof, and can withstand earthquakes. They also maintain a comfortable temperature, produce zero carbon emissions, and are powered by solar and methane gas from recycled waste.Plastic is everywhere. In fact, the environment is so riddled with it, researchers predict that 99% of all birds on this planet will have plastic in their gut by the year 2050. It is not enough to persuade people to use less, plastic needs to be repurposed and reused to be kept out of landfills. Despite informative infographics, emotional statistics, and recycling programs, many nations – especially the United States – continue to toss plastics into landfills without much care. This unfortunate reality has spurred many to get creative with the discarded byproducts of society. Some have used plastic waste to construct marvelous sculptures and raise awareness about the issue, while others are re-purposing it entirely to construct eco-friendly homes. As phys.org reports, the housing crisis has become so bad in Nigeria, nearly 16 million units are required to address the shortage. Because crafting traditional homes would be far too expensive for most, locals adopted the idea put forth by two NGOs and are now building plastic bottle homes. The solution not only cuts costs for building a house, it is beneficial for the environment. Founded by Kaduna-based NGO Development Association for Renewable Energies (DARE), with help from London-based NGO Africa Community Trust, the project is solving two problems at once by addressing the homelessness issue and helping the environment. Not only will there be less plastic in landfills, the house is designed to produce zero carbon emissions. In addition, it is completely powered by solar panels and methane gas from recycled human and animal waste. To create a two-bedroom bottle house, workers fill plastic bottles with sand and then hold them together using mud and cement. This forms a solid wall that is stronger than cinder blocks. That’s not all: These colorful homes are bulletproof, fireproof and can withstand earthquakes. They can also hold a comfortable temperature year round. The buildings can be built to three stories, but no higher, due to the weight of the sand-filled bottles. And, of course, the magnificent diversity of recycled bottles give each house a unique and bright look. A two-bedroom house requires 14,000 bottles to complete. To put this into perspective, Nigeria throws away three million bottles every day. Clearly, there are plenty of bottles which can be repurposed to build every individual in their own abode. At least Nigeria isn’t as wasteful as the United States, which discards 130 million bottles per day. That’s 47 billion bottles every year – nearly 80% of which end up in the landfill. If the United States were to save these bottles and re purpose them into houses like folks in Nigeria are doing, 9,257 houses could be built per day. That is nearly 3.4 million houses a year, reports Off Grid World. With 3.5 million people living on the streets in the U.S., is this the solution needed to remedy the homelessness crisis? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hu0z6zyc2J8 pls spread this is important

Anaconda, At-At, and Bad: theshitpostcalligrapher: morgan1yam: theshitpostcalligrapher: 99daysofr: theshitpostcalligrapher: theshitpostcalligrapher: it fuckin begins my dudes.  for expository context i started working on this bad boy at 1am whilst listening to a fight club audiobook for free on youtube and avoiding readings on international policy so u kno.  same as always.  #why would you dothis to yourself To test my abilities Ok hypothetically speaking how much would it cost for someone to commission something like this. about 3.8 souls on proper conversion rates, but I’m gonna start bidding at around $1500 CAD and we’ll go from there  Okay, so you’re pricing yourself waaaay low there! Not only for the cost of supplies, or time spent making it. But also for the cost on your soul and the cost of this level of quality shitmemeing. You are doing this by hand, and  In most cases, rates for book transcription are approximately $0.01 to $0.20 a word or line, $1 to $3 a page, $10 to $50 an hour, and $5,000 to $20,000 per project, depending on the difficulty of the project and the experience of the transcriptionist. Transcriptionist. Who would just be typing the words out on a keyboard. YOU ARE DOING IT PHYSICALLY. YOU ARE MAKING SHITPOST AAAART. This is effectively the Gregorian tomb of the bee movie, a potential master work. Also, you need to think of how much money you COULD be making during the time that you are spending working on this project. As well as how many months you want to not worry about snacks in the future, or having to pay off the carpel tunnel medication you’ll need for your wrist after this. (Health care is only mostly free.)TLDR: Start your bidding at at least 3 to 5 thousand… at the least. actually i redid the math on this one and you’re actually right. For commissions I charge 35 base plus 20 an hour, with higher base rates if it takes me more than a day in total (100 per day).I can usually do gothic calligraphy at a rate of about 330 characters an hour, give or take. the bee movie is about 40,683 characters in total, which totals me out at roughly 124 hours, rounding up. for just the hourly, that puts us at $2480, but the fact that that total time is over 5 days brings base fee up to 500 dollars. I use black india ink, which i could write whole encyclopedias with with just the 30 dollar bottle i bought 2 years ago, so that’s largely negligible. I use dip nibs which wear like motherfuckers and are always counted as sunk costs bc of how long their work life tends to be. The leather book cost me about 50 bucks after tax. There’s a Canadian tax thing called a “small supplier exemption” whereupon if you have a sole proprietorship entity (ie a small business/freelancing) that makes less than $30,000 a year (which i DEF DO NOT LMAO) you don’t need to register for GST/HST, which is why i don’t charge y’all taxes on stuff. Opportunity cost calculation is tricky, because as sole proprietorship, it’s difficult to quantify the potential gains lost. And in other employment, minimum in my province is 14/hour, and positions w/my degree usually start out at 20/hour anyways so thats a moot point. That totals us out at a starting bid, at cost, of $3030.00 CAD  and of course, for those who feel like it, there’s always a kofi that exists if you would like to donate to and take part in (spiritually at least) of the Tombe Of The Bee efforts
