The trial of Paul Manafort, former Trump campaign chairman, began Tuesday. Manafort was charged with bank fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy after investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller. The Mueller investigation was focused on Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, however, this trial is not related to alleged Russian meddling. The trial is expected to last approximately three weeks. ___ On June 15th Manafort was sent to jail to await his trial on allegations of witness tampering. A grand jury enlisted by special counsel Robert Mueller has indicted 13 Russian nationals and three Russian businesses with interfering in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The charges against the defendants allege conspiracy to defraud the U.S, including using social media platforms to sow political discord in support of President Donald Trump’s candidacy. ____ Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein reminded that “there is no allegation in this indictment that any American had any knowledge.” Rosenstein also noted that the charges do not allege this operation affected the outcome of the presidential election. ___ The indictment says, “Some defendants, posing as U.S. persons and without revealing their Russian association, communicated with unwitting individuals associated with the Trump Campaign and with other political activists to seek to coordinate political activities.” ____ Photo: AP | J.
