Crime, Memes, and Party: amy d @AmyDentata Following yes, even criminals are people that's how human rights work 5:46 PM - 17 May 2018 Full text if you don’t want to swipe: “Yes, even criminals are people. That’s how human rights work. Because once you stop working that way, you can make anyone into a criminal. Dark skin gets equated to ‘gang member.’ Trans gets equated to ‘sex worker’ or ‘pedophile.’ ‘Sex worker’ gets equated to ‘human trafficker.’ And then before you know it, the state cracks down on everybody that isn’t straight, cis, white, and ‘gainfully employed.’ Of course the loophole has always been there, right there in the 13th amendment. The 13th Amendment to the Constitution declared that ‘Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, EXCEPT AS A PUNISHMENT FOR CRIME, whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.' But people say ‘oh it’s about criminals, so that’s okay.’ It’s not okay to dehumanize anyone. And once you let the state dehumanize anyone, they’ll eventually come after you, too. THE LAW DOES NOT DEFINE MORALITY. Slavery was legal. The Holocaust was legal. Only allowing non-criminals to be human means you give up any and all moral authority to the state, which by design has no concept of morality. If you let criminality dehumanize people, you have rejected the very foundation of morality. If you let criminality justify dehumanization, you are always one legislative act away from losing your humanity. The solution isn’t to get meaner, crueler, and more fascist. The solution is to re-humanize our society, de-militarize our police, de-criminalize people who aren’t causing any harm, and always remember the difference between the law and morality. Remember the difference between the law and how the law is enforced. Refuse to let law enforcement be above the law. Refuse to let ‘law and order’ become our core value, when what we need is a moral foundation that isn’t subject to the whims of legislation or theology.” by @ AmyDentata on Twitter.

Bad, Family, and God: Justino Mora @JustinoMora1 Hector Barajas, a U.S. veteran, was deported in 2004. Today, our dear friend Hector won his battle against the U.S. government and will be allowed to return home, become a U.S. citizen, and reunite with his family! Hector will be sworn in as a citizen on April 13th in San Diego. Yass!! 💜🙌🏽😊 Via The San Diego Union-Tribune: "Hector Barajas, who became the face and voice of deported veterans after his own deportation, will be allowed to return to the place he considers home and become a U.S. citizen. Barajas burst into joyous tears seated on a couch Thursday afternoon in front of a large American flag as he read a document informing him that he would be sworn in as a citizen on April 13 in San Diego. “Fourteen years, man,” Hector said, his voice cracking. “Oh my God, this is great. Hallelujah! Hallelujah!”. “I’m coming home, mom!” he added. Barajas was honorably discharged from the Army in 2001 but struggled readjusting to civilian life. He took a plea deal for a charge of shooting at an occupied car in 2002. Because of that conviction, the government took away his green card, and he was deported in 2004 after he finished a prison sentence. “I made bad decisions,” Barajas-Varela told the Union-Tribune last year about that time in his life. “I put myself in that situation... I wouldn’t put myself in that situation again.” Barajas founded the Deported Veterans Support House, known to many as “the Bunker,” in 2013 to support deportees in Tijuana. He became a leader in a push for legislative changes to help U.S. military veterans who had not become citizens avoid deportation and to bring back those who were already removed. He was born in Mexico but raised in Los Angeles from age seven. Since he had a green card, he was able to serve in the Army and was part of the 82nd Airborne Division from 1995 to 2001. At the time, he thought he’d automatically become a citizen, but that was not the case. Members of the military are allowed to apply for citizenship with no waiting period. They still have to fill out the paperwork and pass the tests. Noncitizens who serve in the military are still at risk for deportation if they commit crimes that can cause the U.S. to revoke their green cards."

Children, Future, and Memes: #ProtectTPS @lvanCejaTV #BREAKING A federal Judge has blocked @realDonaldTrump's effort to shut-down DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. He has ordered the administration to resume accepting renewal applications for DACA. Follow @undocumedia for updates on DACA. Repost @IvanCejatv: A federal judge has blocked President Donald Trump's effort to shut-down the Obama-era program that provides quasi-legal status and work permits to foreigners who entered the U.S. illegally as children. In a ruling Tuesday evening, San Francisco-based U.S. District Court judge William Alsup ordered the administration to resume accepting renewal applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, better known as DACA. Alsup said Attorney General Jeff Sessions' conclusion that the program was illegal appeared to be "based on a flawed legal premise." Unless halted by a higher court, the ruling will allow former DACA recipients who failed to renew by an October 5 deadline a chance to submit renewal applications and will also require the administration to allow renewal of applications expiring in the future. The decision does not permit new applications for DACA status. If the judge's order remains in place, it could also roil ongoing legislative efforts on DACA by undercutting the urgency many advocates have expressed, calling for legislation to be passed before large numbers of Dreamers begin losing their protected status in March. Martin, Martin Luther King Jr., and Memes: Martin Luther King Jr. Statue Will Join Confederate Statues At Georgia's State Capital @balleralert Martin Luther King Jr. Statue Will Join Confederate Statues At Georgia's State Capital- blogged by @niksofly ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Georgia's Capitol have a plethora of its confederate soldier statues across its grounds. Confederate general and Ku Klux Klan leader John Brown Gordon and U.S. Sen. Richard Russell, an opponent to the civil rights legislation King wanted, sit as reminders to Georgia's oppressive and racist past (and possible present). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ MartinLutherKingJr. will have a statue in his honor that will sit alongside the very regime he advocated against. Member of Georgia Legislative Black Caucus Representative Calvin Myre stated, "The King statue will inspire and give hope to generations to come." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The unveiling was set before the Charlottesville terrorism, but had since been rescheduled due to the recent moves across states to take down confederate statues. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) feels "this will be a symbol that the state of Georgia is in the business of erecting monuments to deserving individuals rather than focusing its attention on taking down monuments of the past."

At this stage, the Civil Rights Movement had been in motion for over a decade and already achieved legislative success with the Civil Rights Act. However the focus of the movement now became making the promise of equal franchise guaranteed in the Fifteenth Amendment a reality. While African-Americans exercised the right to vote in the years after the amendment’s passage in 1870, discriminatory measures like literacy tests, poll taxes, and grandfather clauses were soon implemented across the country to deprive them of the vote. Thus in 1965 civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. made voter registration the core of their efforts, centering the campaign on the particularly discriminatory Selma, AL. On March 7th - ‘Bloody Sunday’ - as the six hundred unarmed marchers were crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge, they were descended upon by state troopers who viciously beat the protestors. The violence encountered by these peaceful marchers, which was captured on television and broadcast around the world, led to national outcry and caused President Johnson to publicly call for the passage of his administration’s proposed voting rights bill. After securing the support of federal troops, another march was held on March 21st, and with the protection of soldiers the marchers managed to arrive in Montgomery after three days. The marchers were met in Montgomery - the epicentre of the movement and the site of the 1954 bus boycott - by 50,000 supporters, who were addressed by King. Their efforts were rewarded when, in August of that year, Congress passed the Voting Rights Act that ensured all Americans could vote. This was one of the crowning achievements of the Civil Rights Movement, and the Selma to Montgomery march is commemorated as one of the most important moments of the struggle.

“We are on the move and no wave of racism can stop us. The burning of our churches will not deter us. The bombing of our homes will not dissuade us. We are on the move now…not even the marching of mighty armies can halt us.
