The memory capacity of the human brain is 10 times greater than previously thought. According to Terry Sejnowski of The Salk Institute, “We discovered the key to unlocking the design principle for how hippocampal neurons function with low energy, but high computation power. Our new measurements of the brain’s memory capacity increase conservative estimates by a factor of 10 to at least a petabyte, in the same ballpark as the World Wide Web.” For the study, Salk and University of Austin scientists utilized advances in 3D modeling to reconstruct a rat’s hippocampus (memory center of the brain) in order to study synapses at a nanomolecular level. Their findings revealed 26 distinct categories of synapses. The massive computing power of the human brain functions at an energy efficient usage of 20 watts, near the wattage necessary to power a typical light bulb! 🧠💡 brainpower science: The memory capacity of the human brain is 10 times greater than previously thought. He tried to fight teachers, bullied people at random, and generally both gave, and got, a hard time. It was my school's first ever computing class, brand new computer lab and all. How this kid, who I'm almost certain was failing, got into the class I don't know He sat next to me. I didn't care - school bullies were low on my list of things to care about. He was quiet. He took notes. He tried. And I watched him get more and more frustrated, because the teacher never responded when he tried to ask questions, never tried to elaborate for him once everyone else understood. A few weeks in, I saw him trying to read my notes during programming practice. I looked at his screen, and saw what he'd done wrong. I slid my notes across, silently tapped the part he needed, and went back to my work. It took me a long time to realise that he was quite smart, but had some kind of learning disability. And for that entire year, if he had questions, he asked me. I have the ability to explain a single concept six different ways, and would quietly do so until he got it. We never spoke a word to each other outside of that classroom, and I've no idea where he is now, but the teacher announced on our final day that the whole class had passed. permalink source embed save save-RES report give gold reply hide child comments
Wholesome askreddit story via /r/wholesomememes https://ift.tt/2KDcE4F

A group of astrophysicists at the University of Zurich in Switzerland announced on 18 May 2017 that they have created the largest virtual universe ever simulated as part of their research into the “dark side of the Universe,” and their simulation is a bit bigger than your average video game world. Using the Piz Daint supercomputer at the Swiss National Computing Center, the researchers generated a virtual universe of 25 billion virtual galaxies, composed of 2 trillion digital macro-particles that represent the “dark matter fluid” that composes roughly 23 percent of the cosmos. Their research plays an integral role in the European Space Agency’s Euclid space mission, in which the Euclid satellite will be sent to space in 2020 for a six-year data collecting mission to investigate dark matter and dark energy. Euclid will measure the redshift of galaxies and the acceleration of the universe to better understand the expansion of the universe, the formation of cosmic structures, and the nature of this fascinating dark energy. In this image, we see a sliver of the virtual universe nearly a billion light-years across. [x-post /r/geek] via /r/wholesomememes http://ift.tt/2qowQwZ
: April 28, 2017 RIP Perceval the server Perceval passed away peacefully in his sleep last week at the age of 21. Perceval began life as an IBM RISC server running AlX. Early on, it was discovered he had a genetic predis position to compute dates using two digit years. He was able to overcome this in the fall of 1999 by transitioning to Sun hardware. He spent the rest of his life running on various flavors of Sun/Oracle hardware. He lived his final years as a Virtual Machine running on a SPARC-Enterprise-T5120. Perceval chose to run the unidata database. He had other suitors through the years, but stayed true to unidata to the end. Perceval adhered to IEEE standards and was POSIX compliant. Perceval was most proud of his time spent hosting the Personal Lookup Service called PLUS. PLUS allowed students access to their records and registration in the early days of the world wide web. PLUS evolved from a menu based system called CULINE CULINE was based on gopher, a technology that was a predecessor of the World Wide Perceval worked tirelessly behind the scenes loading data from Central Computing into various enterprise systems and campus departmental systems. The Enterprise Directory IDM and the Telecom Management System are a few of these systems Perceval is survived by his peer bercilak and longtime remote host cutransfer. He was tristan, pendragon and roundtable. databases, linux and cloud computing. A private ceremony was held at the OIT Data Center. In accordance with percevals wishes, interment will be performed at the Boulder County center for hard to recycle Perceval always appreciated the support given him by all the developers and sysadms In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Colorado MultValue Users Group.
