Fun fact, sesame street was created to fill the gap in education for children whose families could not afford to send them to preschool. Sesame street taught basic math and phonics as well as interpersonal skills so that children below the poverty line weren’t starting elementary school behind their more privileged classmates. Here sesame street is trying to fill a gap where supportive adults should be. Where there should be a teacher or a family member or a counselor to help, for whatever reason, there isn’t, so Sesame Street is stepping in. This breed of person has always hated Sesame Street. They hated it for showing black and white children playing together. They hated it for giving children of color the head start that rich white families were paying for. They hated it for Bert and Ernie for showing two MEN who LIVED TOGETHER, for the married black nurse who lived on sesame street when it was first released, and for them explaining death. I feel like there was a pregnancy at some point in its early days and they would have REALLY hated that. These days they don’t (usually) say “I’m not letting my kid watch anything with black kids in it” but they sure throw a tantrum in the youtube comments when Sesame Street DARES to show an autistic girl playing with non-autistic children and being treated like shes anyone else. They lose their shit when Sesame Street has to explain incarceration to 5 year olds. And the muppet in south africa with HIV? Hoo boy. They hate everything Sesame Street stands for and tries to provide. They always have. We just have to ignore them and keep supporting the show. So they went on strike in the three stores that the company had opened so far. Cue a shitstorm from the press, and from right wing politicians. But the members were all for it, and other unions started doing sympathy actions. The teamsters refused to deliver goods to their stores, the financial unions blockaded all economical transactions regarding Toys ‘r Us and the strike got strong international support as well, especially in the US. A lot of temporary homelessness is caused by something economist call ‘income shocks”, in other words unforeseen costs that are incurred that break your bank so to speak.  57% of Americans cant even afford an unexpected price tag of $500 and often non-chronic homelessness is caused by simply not being able to afford a car accident or a medical expense or a relatively small expense that wasn’t planned for. The reason why I mention this and mention homelessness is because it is incredibly sad that in this country, you can literally die on the streets if you can’t afford a medical bill, yet our neighbors in Canada treat their citizens with cancer, auto immune disorders, MS, Aids/HIV etc. virtually for free. Another thing that infuriates me is that even Democrats and their leadership and even Hillary Clinton who ran last year as a “progressive” called Universal Healthcare and Bernie’s single payer plan “pie in the sky” despite the fact that these plans work, are less expensive, and give better health outcomes than our system- also despite the fact that the majority of Americans and the majority of Democrats want universal healthcare.  We need to fight for Universal Healthcare now and until we get it. Things like this really tick me off and It’s not political or anything but it’s the fact that you think all that money is there. Here’s what I mean; That weekly check comes to, according to you, 290. Most places DO NOT pay for your half hour lunch that is required by law. So your beginning number was wrong. $7.25 x 7.5 hours a day x 5 days a week only gets you $271.88.  Most people in America get paid bi-weekly, so let’s double it to get the budget. $543.75. That’s GROSS, not NET. Out of that comes anywhere between 10% and 15% taxes depending on state so we’ll low ball it at 10%. Automatically down to $489.38 a pay check. Now health insurance. Usually anywhere from 70-100 a pay check for the cheapest plans. Again, we’ll low ball and go $70. So now we have $419.39 a paycheck. x 2  = $839.  Eight hundred thirty nine dollars. A MONTH. But again, you seem to think that’s fair. So let’s proceed. You say rent is $500? Okay. This person now has $339 left to buy groceries for the whole month, pay utilities, car payment, car insurance, and gas money to get to work.  Those are the bare needs. You have to eat. You have to pay for heat, water, garbage removal, gas and or electricity because apartments do not always include things and rarely all of the above. Most cities in America do not have public transportation. Mine doesn’t despite the fact that our population is over 15,000 people, not counting a taxi. If you have a car, you have to pay that. If you have a car, legally you have to have car insurance. You have to pay that. You have to have gas in that car to get to work to make that money. Now if you can tell me you can get all of that out of $339 you’re lying. You are so focused on rent that you aren’t thinking about everything else people have to pay for. Rent was an example.
