Africa, cnn.com, and Memes: White South African Woman Becomes First To Be Jailed For Hate Speech After Video Of Her Racist Rant Goes Viral; Sentenced To Three Years @balleralert White South African Woman Becomes First To Be Jailed For Hate Speech After Video Of Her Racist Rant Goes Viral; Sentenced To Three Years – blogged by @MsJennyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While racist, hate speech should never be tolerated, it is strictly prohibited in South Africa, as it is specifically excluded from the protection of free speech in the Constitution. In fact, according to the NY Times, back in 2016, the country released a draft law that would criminalize racism, meaning hate speech cases would go to criminal courts instead of civil and would be punishable by up to 10 years in prison. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since then, the nation has moved to implement the new rules and subsequently make an example of a white South African woman. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to CNN, Vicki Momberg was found guilty in November for crimen injuria, better known as the willful injuring of someone’s dignity in her racist verbal attack on a black police officer. The incident was caught on camera and quickly went viral. Since then, Momberg has been prosecuted and sentenced to three years in prison with one year suspended sentence, as she becomes the first South African to be jailed for the offense. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “We’ve had crimen injuria (cases before), but they have always been coupled by other charges. This is the first for a prison sentence for crimen injuria on its own,” a spokesperson said of the sentencing. “We are pleased with the sentence. This sends a clear message to those who undermine other people’s rights.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the incident that led to the sentencing, Momberg was caught on video hurling racial slurs at South African police officers after they stopped to help her after her car was broken into in Johannesburg. According to reports, she repeatedly used words that were used to insult black people during the apartheid. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now, Momberg will have two years behind bars to think about her actions.

Africa, Community, and Empire: Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan Looking to Bring The Story of Mansa Musa to Life @balleralert Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan Looking to Bring The Story of Mansa Musa to Life-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ With the success of their first three projects: “Fruitvale Station,” “Creed” and “Black Panther”, super Director Ryan Coogler and Hollywood Star Michael B. Jordan are already teaming up for more projects. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ According to multiple reports, the duo is now looking to start a project centered around the life of Mansa Musa. Both Coogler and Jordan feel it is important to create influential films that reflect the Black community and the contributions that have been made throughout history. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ “You got to tell stories in today, or in the future,” says Jordan. “Or can we go back even further? There’s always one period that people want to go back to, but can we go back to Hannibal? Or Mansa Musa, destroying economies as he traveled? Can we go back to the Egyptians?” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Mansa Musa was an influential African ruler in the fourteenth century. He was emperor of the Mali Empire, a land filled with gold, which he casually handed out during his religious expedition to Mecca, ultimately causing economic crises to cities that were unfamiliar with such wealth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ In 1324, Musa became the first Muslim ruler to trek almost four-thousand-miles. During his travels, he encountered rulers of the Middle East and Europe, which helped to put Mali on European maps. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ He helped improve Islamic education and he also brought back government bureaucrats and architects. With the development of mosques and a major university, the city of Timbuktu became more urbanized. Musa ruled for 25 years and during that time, Western Africa was said to be at peace. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ While there is no word on when this project will take off, the duo is already in pre-production for another film titled “Wrong Answer,” about a 2006 standardized testing scandal in Atlanta. The sequel to “Creed” is also on the way.

Africa, Dancing, and Family: I am struggling to find the words to express my gratitude at this moment, but i will try Filmmaking is a team sport. And our team was made up amazing people from all over the world who believed in this story. Deep down we all hoped that people would come to see a flim about a fictional country on the continent of Africa, made up of a cast of people of African descent. Never in a million years did we imagine that you all would come out this strong, it still humbles me to think that people care enough to spend their money and time watching our film- But to see people of all backgrounds wearing clothing that celebrates their heritage, taking pictures next to our posters with their friends and family, and sometimes dancing in the lobbies of theaters often moved me and my wife to tears For the people who bought out theaters, who posted on social about how lit the film would be bragsed about our awesome cast, picked out outfits to wear, and who stood in line in theaters all over the world- all before even seeing the film.. Africa, Black History Month, and Community: Petition Asks Marvel to Invest 25% of "Black Panther" Profits into the Black Community @balleralert Petition Asks Marvel to Invest 25% of “Black Panther” Profits into the Black Community-blogged by @thereal__bee ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ As one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, “Black Panther” is expected to break some box office records and bring in millions. But now a petition has begun to have part of the profits be invested in the Black community. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ A petition on Change.org is asking Marvel to invest 25 percent of the profits into Black communities. Creator of the petition, Chaz Gormley wrote, "Through a clever, well-manufactured marketing campaign Marvel Studios and their parent company The Walt Disney Company have targeted the Black community with their advertisements for the upcoming Black Panther film, due to release on February 16, 2018. As marginalized groups have become more vocal, corporations and their savvy public relations departments have turned to catering to these groups - to turn a profit - and this film by Marvel Studios is no different." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Gormley also notes Marvel’s obvious appeals to the black community such as the film being released during Black History Month and Gil Scott-Heron's ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ playing in the film's initial trailer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ The petition is asking those in the Black community to regain their power and demand that Marvel and its parent company, Disney, invest profits back into the community that is most connected with the film and have been faced with “police brutality and substandard living conditions." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ "You have the ability to not only be entertained but to leave the theater in February knowing that a portion of your money will be coming back into your community" Gormley adds. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ "To not only go see a film about a fictitious country in Africa with advanced technology but the opportunity to invest in programs which focus on the fields - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics - that make such advancements possible, in real life.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ What do you think about this idea?
