America, Black History Month, and Chicago:
Black history month day 11: Ragtime composer Scott Joplin.

Stock Joplin was born just three years after the end of the Civil War in 1868, to a former slave man and freeborn black woman. His father worked as a laborer for the railroad and his mother was a maid. When not working, his father liked to play the violin for plantation parties in North Carolina while his mother sang and played the banjo. Joplin was given a rudimentary musical education by his family and from the age of seven he was allowed to play the piano while his mother cleaned.

Joplin was ambitious about learning piano, often practicing after school. He was tutored for a while by German Jew who had emigrated to America. This teacher taught him folk, classical, and opera music, encouraging him to recognize music as an art form. Joplin never forgot the manโ€™s kindness and sent the ill and aging man a gift of money once he had become successful.

Jump and did some work as a real way labor but decided to abandon this in pursuit of a musical career. He soon realized that there were not a lot of opportunities for black musicians, churches and brothels being the primary places he could play piano. But he saw some minor success at the Chicago worldโ€˜s fair and went on to published several significantly popular ragtime pieces.

He composed an opera and move to New York to get it published, unfortunately art music was a field largely closed off the African-Americans. He did not get to see the opera have any success in his lifetime, although it was successfully staged in the 1970s.

America, Fall, and Lets Roll: September 11, 2001..... As I stood before this hallowed place.....16 years to the day when time stood still. When we as a Nation watched the Towers Fall, watched the Pentagon burn and the words "Let's Roll" showed a moment of true sacrifice aboard Flight 93 as REAL Americans prevented yet another hit on American soil. A day when we actually stood together as Americans in the face of despair.... I can't help but think of where we are now! Hate groups running rampant, racial and political divide, calls for monument removals, calls for Presidential Assassinations from elected officials... Where did we go wrong? What happened to us as a Nation? In an age where we are more connected than ever before through technology....it's seems we are further apart than we have ever been. So what are we gonna do America? It's true there is never any room in America for bigotry or hate......but neither is DIVISION! The truth is, We are either together or we're not... We are either all in on this idea that is America or we're out... I wonder what the people who on that day 16 years ago were united as one and were simply Americans would say to us now? Would they be proud of the steps we have taken since the day Americans stood together as one nation in the face of true opposition? Or would they not recognize who we are or what we have become? When I think of that day I don't think of terror. I don't think of weakness. I don't see black and I don't see white. I DO NOT see politics of who is right and who is wrong.... I think of a rallying cry for America and the awakening of what makes Americans truly great.... EACH OTHER!! WE are the problem....BUT we are also the answer! Think about it and NEVER FORGET! AMERICA.....Always! -Graham๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ USA neverforget 911 freedom america
