Memes, Soldiers, and Taken: πŸ“š Gather Round Family Gotta Gem For U. I'll Try My Best To Paraphrase This One. This Is Robert Smalls, Born A Slave In Beaufort, SC On April 5, 1839. It's Speculated That Robert's Father Was His "Massa" Henry McKee Because He Showed Favor Towards Robert And His Mother Lydia(who she raised as well πŸ˜’) His Whole Life, Letting Him Visit Family On A Nearby Plantation Freely. Lydia Used This Favor Shown To Them To Show Robert The Ills Of Their Current State Seeing As He Didn't Quite Have A Hold On The Concept Seeing As He Wasn't Treated As Harsh As The Others On The Plantation. During His Teen Years He Was Rented To A Man In Nearby Charleston Where He Met His Wife And They Had Kids. Fearing For Their Survival And Quality Of Life Robert Began Planning An Intricate Escape To The Union States Because He Had Heard That They Wouldn't Return Any Runaways To Their Confederate Homes. Being The Observant Person That Robert Always Was, He Memorized All Signals And Gestures That Sentry Officers Used Moving Along The Coast Working As A Boat Hand And Often Commandeering The Barges. He Gained The Overseers Trust So Much That They Would Often Leave Him And The Other Negro Hands On The Ship Alone To Go Into Town For Drinks And What Have You. So One Night They Did And Robert Put His Plan Into Play. He Sailed Towards The North Up The Coast Going Thru 5 Confederate Blockades Using Signals And Making Sure Nobody Noticed No Whites Aboard. When He Finally Reached The Union Blockade Him And His Men Raised A White Flag In Surrender And Were Taken Out Of Harms Way By The Union Soldiers. Robert Would Later Be Apart Of Both Houses Of Legislature In South Carolina And The House Of Representatives. 😏 I Could've Literally Typed A Whole Book On It But I'm Sure Somebody Somewhere Is Going To Make A Movie About Him As They Should.
