Does this mean that I as a white man can go to work in California with my natural hair and beard? Like fuck you can.“we still have to pass legislation like this ”  - no you don’t, sorry you were asked to wash your hair W’kanda, but you smell. sure the law is unnecessary, but black people, especially women are still discriminated against for wearing their natural hair, both by other black folks and white folks. This is when you realize the anti-sjw trend is dying when it’s community can no longer think beyond something like this tweet. Tell a young black girl who got her hair cut by her teacher and sent home how this is ridiculous. You’re really just invalidating a struggle you have no idea of “Sorry you had to wash your hair W’kanda” shut your racist ass up 🙄 Women were literally being told they couldn’t wear normal ass braids and fros. If you refused, the teacher would often ridicule you by ignoring you anytime you attempted to speak or participate in class, to the point of saying offensive, false things about your people to rile you up enough that you gave in and picked a white name so the teacher would let you speak and tell the truth. (This is shown in bury my heart at wounded knee). In fact, it is hard to trace records before the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries bc the govt considered the way native peoples often have several different names that they go by in different context and by different people to be too annoying to record them in a census, another reason they were forced to choose white names. Being oppressed for your natural hair and the names you choose is a real thing other poc face and it’s wrong and it’s racist, but this specific post is about what it means to American Indians, and for them it was not only racist stereotyping, but forced assimilation and genocide of their cultures. dude holy shit being ridiculed for not assimilating was the least of your worries in a residential school. i know people who were forced to kneel on sharp rocks in a corner for speaking a single word in their native language some fun facts abt residential schools: • people who went to residential schools were abused physically, sexually, verbally, and emotionally. my mushum went through all of these until he turned 18 and was allowed to leave • boys were not allowed to wear their braids. period. the point of the residential schools was to ‘kill the indian in the child’ and you can google literal before-and-after images of students that the schools would distribute as a source of PRIDE • the government would experiment on the students, starving them to see how long they could go without food before it seriously affected them. officially, over 6,000 native children died in residential schools. our government admits the number was likely much higher • residential schools were literally hitler’s source of inspiration for concentration camps during world war II • where im working right now, there are people in their 30s who were forced to attend residential schools • the last residential school closed in 1996, one year after i was born, two hours away from where i live, twenty minutes from my family’s reserve native assimilation has been the goal from the very start Residential schools may have officially been shut down, but native kids are still disproportionately removed from their homes and while ICWA (the Indian Child Welfare Act) was designed with the intent of ensuring they’re still placed within their community, ICWA was just recently overturned in the courts, which means that these children are being overwhelmingly placed with white families. This hasn’t stopped. They’ve just gotten less overt about it. : 61below: jyuu-chan: something-in-the-way-she-knows: freakishfrollic: psalmsofraven: yokhakidfiasco: stacyfaheyart: Illustration about Native American boys who have to cut off their braids to follow school dress codes. Unlike Elves, who believe the act of cutting their hair is shameful, or Orcs who only maintain their hair until battle (an orcish answer to throwing down the gauntlet), a Dwarf will cut or restyle their hair at certain turning points during their life, such as reaching adulthood, marriage, a major victory loss (but not limited to) or on the battlefield, and death. Youth (50 and below) Simple, Free Ribbons -Beard hasn't come in fully No beads -No braids Usually or in a ponytail are popular with the kids worn loose Adulthood (51-200) (loose) Braids allowed Hair is very long if unmarried Beads can be earned -Improper entírely loose at this point ín life to wear hair AURUstETFe Old Age (200+ -Worn up, if long enough if short, ribbons, horsehair, wool, will be used to emulate longer hair etc Important note: the hair of a dwarf can be cut, but the beard gets left alone. My Grandma passed away a little over a month ago, She was a first grade teacher inner city Akron, OH for 30+ years and never took a single sick day. We found this while going through her FB messages. via /r/wholesomememes https://ift.tt/2M6EHc2: Hi Mrs. I don't expect you to remember me, but I was a student of yours at Lincoln 25 years ago. My name is3 was a voracious reader with long blonde braids, and I grew up in the poorest neighborhood. You were the first person in my life to ever see something extraordinary in me and it made all the difference. I've worked in libraries the last 6 or so years, while putting myself through college. It took longer than it does most people, but that doesn't matter. I'll be 32 in a few months and next fall I plan to begin a PHD program in psychology. I don't know where I'd be if I wasn't fortunate enough to have you for a first grade teacher, but I can imagine. I remember your little corner house in Firestone Park. Sometimes on my lunch break when I'm a sub at the FP library, I walk by it and thank my lucky stars that you showed me l could be more than some inner city statistic. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I will never forget your kindness. My Grandma passed away a little over a month ago, She was a first grade teacher inner city Akron, OH for 30+ years and never took a single sick day.
