After explaining that drag’s political power lies in the dissonance of “men dressing up as women,” Ru was asked if he’d allow a “biological woman” to compete on the show.

“Drag loses its sense of danger and its sense of irony once it’s not men doing it, because at its core it’s a social statement and a big f-you to male-dominated culture,“ RuPaul tells Guardian. “So for men to do it, it’s really punk rock, because it’s a real rejection of masculinity.” When asked if trans women can be drag queens, he brings up season nine contestant Peppermint, who was the first out trans woman to compete on the show. “Mmmm. It’s an interesting area. Peppermint didn’t get breast implants until after she left our show; she was identifying as a woman, but she hadn’t really transitioned.”

The interviewer goes on to ask if RuPaul would allow a trans woman who was actively transitioning to compete. “Probably not. You can identify as a woman and say you’re transitioning, but it changes once you start changing your body. It takes on a different thing; it changes the whole concept of what we’re doing. We’ve had some girls who’ve had some injections in the face and maybe a little bit in the butt here and there, but they haven’t transitioned.”

These statements go to show how antiquated RuPaul’s conceptions of trans identity and the queering of gender really are. For someone who is deservedly lauded as an icon of genderfuckery, the fact that RuPaul still sees drag as a boys’ club is disappointing, not to mention the fact that he reduces trans identity to whether or not a person has had surgery. The notion that the only true power to be found in an art form that has expanded so much since RuPaul came up seems insulting in the face of the incredible female artists — both cisgender and trans — who are doing drag today, largely thanks to the influence of Drag Race.

https://www.out.com/popnography/2018/3/03/rupaul-would-probably-not-let-transitioning-queen-drag-race

Wait… if he won’t let cis women be on the show, then isn’t he just being consistent here by viewing trans women as real women?
: RuPaul Would'Probably Not Let a Transitioning Queen on Drag Race Strai Ta wi Photography: Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP
ithelpstodream:

In a new interview with the Guardian, RuPaul stood firm on his stance that trans women and bio-queens are unwelcome on Drag Race. I do think that Confirmation Bias and news media using misleading numbers are 2 of the biggest problems that people face today. I mean that. Example; If you are reading this, the likelihood of you being shot by another person for basically any reason over your entire life is virtually nil. If you are a soldier or in a gang maybe it increases bit. The thing is, those folks having a higher rate has no real effect on the likelihood of a housewife in Kansas potentially getting shot yet they do effect those averages.

Funny enough, last night I was talking with 2 friends about a study I had to do in college on the rate of Lupus in women with breast implants in the late 80s. There were 2 cases (in the entire US) with reasonable evidence to assume that ruptured breast implants could have been one of multiple factors which resulted in those 2 women to having immune system issues. The thing to notice there are “could have been one of multiple factors” by the way. Also, that these were ruptured silicon implants which were (I think) 10+ year old implants. Anyways, the reason I had to study the case was because within months of this ‘speculation” there was a massive spike in women who had breast implants in hospitals with Lupus-like symptoms. The reason? Oprah did a TV special on the dangers of breast implants. Not ruptured 10 year old implants under specific circumstances mind you. Just implants. She showcased one of these women.

To date, there has never been conclusive evidence to support that breast implants have ever been a major contributing factor as a cause of Lupus. A woman could develop Lupus (much more common in women) and have implants. And implants can at times cause complications and especially in the past, have been dangerous. But, those things were glossed over in favor of creating a public issue. Within months, Oprah had caused a mini epidemic of psychosomatic Lupus in women with implants. It went from 2 cases to over 10,000 mind you, in months.

: The real cause of increasing autism prevalence? 25000- 300000 A Autism 20000 ■ Organic Food Sales 2 200000 8 15000 C E 10000 5000- 100000 a r0.9971 (p 0.0001) Year Sources: Organic Trade Association, 2011 Organic Industry Survey, U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Program Data Analysis system DANS), OMB# 1 820-0043 Children with Disabilities Receiving Special Education Under Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
ronworkman:

5 Ways Statistics Are Used to Lie to You Every Day

As a person that deals with numbers on a daily basis, I can’t pick one of these 5 that hasn’t shaved years off of my life watching people commit.
