Memes, New York, and News: ON THIS DAY IN 1923 King Tut's burial chamber was entered British archeologist Howard Carter entered the inner burial chamber of Tutankhamun's tomb and found the 3,300-year-old sarcophagus and mummy of the Egyptian pharaoh remarkably preserved NIMBLE NEWS NETWORK Tutankhamun (King Tut) was an Egyptian pharaoh who lived around 3,300 years ago. He ascended the throne at the age of 9 and died when he was 19. His tomb was found in an area called the Valley of the Kings, east of the Nile River, in November of 1922. The burial chamber, which housed his mummified remains, was not entered until this day in 1923. Excavators at the time had an agreement with the Egyptian government. They could keep half of whatever they found. The other half went to the government. Intact tombs were the exception. Everything discovered in intact tombs belonged to the government. That rule was not honored. In 2011, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City agreed to return 19 artifacts it had acquired from the tomb. As for King Tut’s mummy, it remained in the tomb and was never put on public display until 2007. Last year, for the first time ever, the tomb and all 5,000 of the artifacts King Tut was buried with, more than three millennia ago, were shown in galleries at the billion-dollar Grand Egyptian Museum (also known as the Giza Museum), located between Cairo and the pyramids.

Advice, Crazy, and God: Quincy Jones Admits to Having 22 Girlfriends, Says They All Know of Each Other @balleralert Quincy Jones Admits to Having 22 Girlfriends, Says They All Know of Each Other - blogged by: @ashleytearra ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After three marriages, QuincyJones is sure that he’s done with the faithful life. In fact, the divorcee has 22 girlfriends to prove it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In an interview with GQ Magazine, the 84-year-old entertainment mogul opened up about his love life, and none of us were mentally prepared for what he had to say. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “I got twenty-two girlfriends,” he chuckles. “I was married three times, man. Was told not to marry actresses or singers. I ended up with two actresses—Peggy Lipton and Nastassja Kinski, and a superstar model. I didn’t listen to all the advice.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However—despite his marital past, Jones doesn’t have any plans to tie the knot again anytime soon, especially since it’d be extremely hard to narrow down such a high number of girlfriends to just one wife, right? We’d imagine so. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When asked if he was serious about having 22 lovers, Jones blatantly says, “Hell yeah. Everywhere. Cape Town. Cairo. Stockholm-she’s coming in next week. Brazil-Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, and Rio. Shanghai, [I’ve] got a great girl over there, too, man.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Surprisingly, all of the women know of each other, as Jones proudly admits that “he doesn’t lie.” And, allegedly, most of them are between the ages of 28 and 42. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So, when the question came up about if he’d ever date someone around his age, Jones was quick to shut that down. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Are you crazy?” He gives the interviewer a startled look. “For what, man? There’s nothing; there’s no upside. You gotta be kidding. I got me some technology out there that keeps [the] fat and old away from here. [It] buzzes if they’re too old. But, you’d be surprised. These women, the young ones, are aggressive now. Oh my God, they’re fearless, man. All over the world.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As you can see, Mr. Jones is still a rolling stone, even in his old age.

And the inciting incident? There was a concert in Cairo by the Lebanese band Mashrou’ Leila (whose lead singer Hamed Sinno is openly gay and an advocate of LGBTQ rights) where someone waved a rainbow flag. The Egyptian government has made as of October 3rd 22 arrests according to the BBC and 33 arrests according to the Independent (both also linked above). Both articles as well as the facebook statement made to the Mashrou’ Leila facebook page made reference to “anal examinations” (which the facebook post correctly calls out as rape), and that some of those arrested are minors, as well as the aforementioned Grindr stalking. Not only has the Egyptian government used this tactic before (from 2016 and from 2014), but it’s the same tactic that has been used in Chechnya earlier this year (and possibly continues to be used; news coming out of Chechnya is rare in the best of times). While both the BBC and Independent articles endeavor to state that in Egypt homosexuality is not technically illegal, the Egyptian government’s use of laws against “debauchery” and “blasphemy” makes clear that that’s just a pretext and a smokescreen. This comes on the heels of the US ambassador to the UN Nikki Harley (a Trump appointee) voting “No” on a United Nations condemnation of the death penalty for LGBTQ people. If there were ever a time to hold our elected officials accountable and demand for an end to the oppression of our LGBTQ Muslim siblings, it’d be now. Timestamp: October 3rd, 2017, 17:20 EST.

This history is hidden from us, because they are women of color.  Their names are Dr Anandibai Joshi, class of 1886; Dr Kei Okami, class of 1889; and Dr Sabat Islambooly, class of 1890.  Dr Joshi was the first Indian woman to earn an MD; her Wikipedia page has the broad details of her life story. She argued that she should go to medical school due to “a growing need for Hindu lady doctors in India”, and was apparently the only student with the stomach to last through a demonstration autopsy of an infant. She died of tuberculosis in 1887, aged just 21 years old, but was such a remarkable figure that her first biography was published in 1888; since then there have been multiple biographies, a novel, a play, and a Hindi serial about her life. Drexel University has quite a few more documents about her in their archives. Dr Okami was the first Japanese woman to earn a degree in Western medicine from a Western university; she also has a Wikipedia page which gives an overview of her life. Among other things she was appointed to head the gynaecology unit at Jikei Hospital in Tokyo, but resigned after Emperor Meiji visited the hospital and refused to receive her because she was a woman. Dr Islambooly is the least well-known; her life was mostly undocumented after she returned home to Syria as the country’s first female physician. She was apparently a Kurdish Jewish woman who later moved to Cairo, where she died in 1941. Here’s an article about their medical school, mentioning some of the other pioneering women who attended it.

America, Facebook, and Family: THE DAILY WIRE Trump Succeeds In Freeing American Charity Worker From Egyptian Prison. Obama Had Failed PRESIDENT TRUMP AT WORK An Egyptian-American charity worker has been released from prison in Cairo after three years behind bars. The American citizen returned home to the United States late Thursday. “President Trump and his aides worked for several weeks with Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi to secure the freedom of Aya Hijazi, 30, a U.S. citizen, as well as her husband, Mohamed Hassanein, who is Egyptian, and four other humanitarian workers,” reports The Washington Post. “Trump dispatched a U.S. government aircraft to Cairo to bring Hijazi and her family to Washington.” According to White House officials, this wasn’t your classic Obama-era quid pro quo transaction or controversial prisoner exchange. Unlike Obama, who infamously traded five senior Taliban Gitmo detainees for U.S. army deserter Bowe Bergdahl in 2014, Trump personally oversaw Hijazi’s release and received assurances from Cairo that the prisoner release was a gesture of good faith.
