Arthur had some extreme meta-references to pop culture. There’s no question the writers on the show were huge fucking nerds. Remember the South Park spoof? South Park. Referenced on a show for eight-year-olds that aired on PBS. I just noticed in the wrestling scene, there are humans, and even Hulk Hogan is not an uncanny-valley aardvarkized caricature of himself. The funniest thing to me about this segment is that in the original show after the South Park segment Arthur gets big mad that the aliens wouldn’t eat him for being too high in cholesterol and argues the point which ends with him shouting “I’m just as edible as anybody!” I remember this episode so well 😂: anscathmarcach: libertarirynn: keeppartyvangoing: thegooftroop: late last night i watched an episode of arthur where buster says “osamu tezuka is the god of manga” in japanese and strangely enough i wasnt dreaming ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? theamazingcaptainspider: hayley566: waveringwannabevalkyrie: libertarirynn: hayley566: I think I know why that is. It’s because Wonder Woman is more fantasy-esque and Captain Marvel is a more harsh reality. Let me explain, Wonder Woman grew up in a paradise without men or sexism and just now entered the world of man and just now experienced sexism. Carol grew up in the world of man and grew up within this system. That and Wonder Woman takes place further in the past, making it easier to think “wow, back then was awful but we’re way better now” while several comic fans grew up in the 90’s, making it feel not that long ago. While I love both films, I do feel like Captain Marvel took more risks than Wonder Woman in this sense and I applaud it for that. Miss me with that nonsense. The Carol we see at the start of the film only remembers her life on a planet where men and women were equally trained combatants and as far as we can tell have the respect of their male peers. Yes she was technically born on earth but until the latter half of the film she doesn’t remember that part. Her personality is shaped by the world that she remembers. And how is it “taking risks” to have a character that’s almost completely invulnerable and whose only “flaw” is not realizing how awesome she actually is, even though she was already practically all powerful? How is it taking risks to have a character who basically never learns or grows and is just already a badass who dispatches all enemies with little to no difficulty? Diana had to face defeat and the possibility that her simplistic belief in justice and the existence of war need to be re-examined. She had to work with others and listen to wisdom and advice in order to make informed decisions. She was powerful, but not invulnerable. She was relatable and likable. She didn’t go around being cold and rude to people for no damn reason and ooze pretension with every word she spoke. Y'all really can’t distinguish fiction from reality huh? I call bullshit on “wOrLd oF mEn” bullshit because CM’s writing was fucking trash. Literally every single fucking man she met besides Nick Fury and the Skrull guy was a complete misogynistic caricature, to the point that her FUCKING DAD’S first reaction to her getting in a go-cart accident was not desperate fear/concern for his only daughter, but to…immediately belittle her? No babe that’s not reality, that’s shit ass writers who have no sense of nuance and no sense of developing villains because “UHHHHH HERO IS WOMAN AND MAN HATE WOMAN SO ALL MEN BAD”.Take another example, the boot camp scene where apparently like 8 white guys have nothing to do except stand around and taunt Carol? Except in real life boot camp no one has fucking time to stand around, your ass is constantly being drilled and harassed by your drill instructor, and all of the recruits are being shaped into a unit to WORK TOGETHER, with everyone being treated equally harshly. (Also, I’m supposed to believe that boot camp back in the 80’s/90’s was unisex?) If it was just Carol training on her own, that again begs the question of why an entire group of guys was just staring at her while she was training instead of I don’t know… doing their own training? Relaxing on base during what little leisure time they had? But those questions don’t matter because the writers didn’t give a damn about reality. They only gave a fuck about pushing their bullshit man hating agenda, strawmanning all men, and creating a situation where Carol was nothing but a poor innocent victim of evil cruel men. They literally only existed to victimize Carol and make all of her behavior seem acceptable because “they were mean to her first, so if she decides to nearly break a man’s hand off and steal his motorcycle later, it’s okay!” That’s not fucking realism, that’s hack writing.Captain Marvel is bad, she’s not even remarkable by the standards of female characters, and quite frankly it’s insulting that you ignore and downplay other, far more iconic and well-written female heroes just because Carol plays to your politics. @waveringwannabevalkyrie “world of man” is a term used in the Wonder Woman comics several times to describe the world outside of themiscrya. That’s why I used it here. I would go over how abusive men do exist, just like abusive women do and how I’ve had my own experiences with an abusive father but from your tone, I think if I explain anymore you would make fun of me or something with the whole “aw you have daddy issues and that’s why you like the movie lol”. I’m so hope you’re not that cruel but knowing the internet, you cannot be safe. I just hope you’re not like those kind of people that I met and are willing to at least understand that just because you don’t experience something doesn’t mean it’s the same for everyone else.@libertarirynn as someone who’s seen the movie, I feel like the struggle was more than just “not knowing how awesome she was.” She was being lied to about her entire life for six years and we even see her have a breakdown upon realizing this. We see her sobbing out in a field over finding all this out. The idea of finally being free from the control of others, whether male or female (people seem to forget that minn-erva was also a villain in the movie) in both a physical and emotional sense. Despite Carol having her memories wiped in the beginning, the audience gets flashes of the sexism she faced growing up. While I love both films, I will say that captain marvel spoke to me more than Wonder Woman because of my own personal experiences and if it didn’t do the same for you guys, that’s fine. I just feel that the movie gets misrepresented or misinterpreted a lot and that it is unfair. It sucks that Wonder Woman is used to bash captain marvel despite the different approaches the movies take towards women’s issues. In fact, that behavior has caused me to like Wonder Woman less and less and I really don’t want that to happen. Not only do I start to see the flaws in the film being put on a pedestal, I become more defensive of the one that’s being misrepresented. I still love the Wonder Woman movie but the internet makes it hard to sometimes.I guess what I’m saying is…I wish fans wouldn’t use one to bash the other. I honestly wasn’t trying to bash Wonder Woman or use captain marvel to do so in my last reply. What's he gonna say exactly? And to whom? Because imagining a haggard and likely shitfaced Pennsylvania construction worker barging through the grocery store like, "HEY!!! THAT BROAD-HIPPED 5'3" EFFEMINATE KID WITH THE CONSPICUOUSLY BIZARRE NAME WHO SPEAKS IN A CARTOONISHLY AFFECTED CARICATURE OF MASCULINITY AIN'T GOT NO DICK!!! "HELLO, I'D LIKE TO REPORT A FRAUD IN YOUR DELI DEPARTMENT. THERE IS NOT SAUSAGE AS ADVERTISED." What the fuck a-fragile-sort-of-anarchy Odds are he's more embarrassed of having a trans ex-kid than I am of being outed at work, so what if I go to his job and tell everyone I'm trans first? What then, coward? grimthetransman That's such a power move dualclock This is exactly the struggle I'm having with my own mother right now and honestly? i sort of did that, but at the church i grew up in. my mom was like "oh so what if i tell the whole church youre trans" as if she had forgotten that nearly everyone who goes to my church is actually gay, like elderly retired gay couples, so i was like "haha okay," and told everyone. And lemme just say, watching a 5'2", 87 year old gay man stop my mother mid-sentance to say "Actually, I think he prefers to go by Aiden now." was the BIGGEST dick energy ive ever seen Source: a-fragile-sort-of-anarchy 168,671 notes That old man has real big dick energy

Lady, i have 2 degrees on this. I literally have walls of books on the history of food. White people didnt rape, colonize, steal, or destroy anymore than the Chinese did. And i doubt you would be okay saying this about Asians. People tended to use less seasoning back ghen because food was bred and grown differently. Things like chicken and beef had way more natural flavor, so additional seasonings werent really needed. In fact, for some places, seasonings were typically used by the poor, who were left with bad tasting scraps. Other places had them solely for the rich, since non native spices were incredibly expensive. Just like with Japanese culture, food culture in European cultures are often rely on tradition. Traditional methods are used, even if obsolete from newly available ingredients. It’s why old traditional methods of wine and cheese making are still used today. In fact, simple flavors and limited seasonings are available in a large amount of African dishes. The whole “white people dont season their food” stereotype originated in the US, and is clearly wrong, since European immigrants brought over tons of well seasoned and loved food like pizza, sausages, gyros, literally a ton of well known french dishes. I mean most southern cuisine came from French immigrants, and African slaves and paid servants (who at the time didnt even have access to most spices) simply copied those. The only real nuance is the addition of peppers and things like nutmeg and corn (originating in the americas) which European immigrants had already been using in their recipes. ( Actual soul food that can be entirely credited to African Americans is limited). The point is that the caricature of white people’s cooking being unseasoned is a very real part of reality for other cultures. Japan prides its traditional food with simplistic flavors. It’s called: antisemitic caricature. I don’t understand what’s Jewish about mother gothel… she has a typical Disney face doesn’t she? Is it the curly hair..? I mean her nose and everything else seem normal? I’m sorry, I’m just trying to figure it out, you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to. dark curly hair - long hooked nose - darker complexion than the blond blue eyed heroine 9and really the rest of the cast - portrayed as greedy and evil. Lisa Edelstein is Jewish.  As are Idina Menzel and Amy Winehouse, both of whom I have seen compared in looks to Gothel.  Gothel’s design is a pretty clear caricature of ethnically Jewish women.   This is a pretty good contrast between Rapunzel and Gothel.  Rapunzel has the “typical Disney face”: Here’s a more close up look at her features. The hooked nose becomes even more pronounced as she becomes “eviler.” If you wanted to claim that there was noting out of the ordinary for Disney animation when it came to Gothel’s features, you would have to find at least one Disney princess or heroine with similar characteristics (long hooked nose and dark curly hair, etc). But here is what we have is - small noses that turn up at the end: wide, flatter noses (though cheers to Disney for not putting button noses on their characters of color, although Esmerelda’s clothing design deserves another essay on Rromani stereotypes and there are some major issues with Pocahontas as well) And then a few misc noses (again, props for Jasmine’s nose not being a button): Apart from just the design of Gothel, there’s also the whole: “obviously ‘other’ (read Jewish) woman kidnaps the pretty blonde (read: gentile) kid to use her for ritualistic/magical purposes” Like that right there on top of the aesthetic Jewish-coding is what pushed the antisemitic caricature over the top for me.  It harkens back to antisemitic blood libel that claimed that Jews stole gentile children for all manner of nefarious reasons. Even when Gothel is in “mother” role to Rapunzel, she’s is shown as nagging and passive aggressive, both antisemitic stereotypes of Jewish women. There is no one thing that makes her an antisemitic caricature, but the design, plus the storyline she plays out, plus her characterization cement the overall character as antisemitic.   Jew-coding a villain is not in itself always antisemitic when there are also Jewish coded heroes. Rapunzel does not have that. Having a villain steal a baby for magical/ritualistic reasons is not always antisemitic as long as the villain is not Jew-coded.  Rapunzel fails this as well. Having a nagging and passive aggressive mother character is not antisemitic provided that she is not, again, coded as Jewish.  Rapunzel fails once again. Hope this helps. EDIT: @ariminak pointed out that some of my wording made it sound like Gothel’s features only stereotypically caricatured Ashkenazi women when in fact that is not the case.  I changed the language to remove that phrasing and make it clear that any ethnically Jewish women can be affected by this type of aesthetic trope. If you reblogged the old version, could you please delete it and reblog this one instead. Spread this version so people recognize that this stuff harms all Jewish women. omfg can y’all chill the fuck out, any race can be portrayed as hero or villain, it’s a fucking kids movie not a political statement So I’m guessing you’re white and a gentile. As such, you’ve more than likely grown up looking at tv and movies and fairytales and seeing your face in those of the heroes. Jewish people don’t get that.  When we are portrayed in live action, our characters are more often than not whitewashed and in other media, our features are used and caricaturized to create “evil looking” villains. You don’t see it because you’ve been ingrained with the idea that “ethnic” features are just “how you make a character look evil.”  You don’t look at Gothel and see your mother.  You don’t see yourself and your people.  You don’t see decades of propaganda aimed at fostering hate against you and ultimately seeking to destroy you.   But seeing how you also seem to think that saying you’re not attracted to an entire race of people ISN’T racist, you really don’t get any say on any of this. So really, you need to chill the fuck out and stop telling marginalized people to stop talking about the tools of our own marginalization. Let’s play a game I like to call: Movie Villain or Antisemitic Propaganda: Many “evil witch” tropes were built on European antisemitic stereotypes, not just in appearance but in the storylines they play out as well. Greediness, stealing children, killing children, hunger for power, etc.  Every time a movie villain design uses stereotyped Jewish features to communicate “evilness” to an audience, they perpetuate the marginalization of the people they are using.  One big issue I have is that Gothel’s didn’t start out as the antisemitic caricature that made it to screen.  Much of the early concept art has a more dark romanticism feel.   They changed the original design. Presumably to make Gothel more “other” from the good characters in the movie.  At some point, a decision was made that dark curly hair and a hooked nose wound better convey their villain. It really doesn’t matter if any of this was intentional, I’d actually bet that it wasn’t.  However, antisemitic tropes are so engrained in our societies that people like you, even when confronted with a step by step break down of what it is, feel comfortable thinking that there’s nothing wrong with it and mocking those calling it out as if we are overreacting. You seem to have completely ignored the majority of my post.  It is the character design, plus the characterization, plus the story line that mirrors blood libel that makes Gothel an antisemitic character.  It’s not just about someone of a certain race or ethnicity being a villain.  It’s about how stereotypes of a certain ethnic group are understood as “villainous” due to villains being repeatedly coded as Jewish over decades of film and tv. And contrary to your naive belief, all media is political to some extent. Every time a historically present minority is not included in film (ex: lily-white Harlem in Fantastical Beasts) or when a minority character is whitewashed, or when the “ethnic” features of a minority are used almost universally to portray bad guys, it is a political and social issue.  When you never see yourselves as the people who play the hero or even see your people existing in a portrayal of a place where they should be, it is not benign. Reblogging again for these additions. I’m not Jewish, but I can imagine seeing yourself villanized again and again must wear on you so hard (like queer coded villains do on me). The stereotypes are so insidious, I didn’t even realize she was Jewish coded until I saw this post for the first time, and since then I’ve been able to pick up on more anti-semitic media. Every time a historically present minority is not included in film (ex: lily-white Harlem in Fantastical Beasts) or when a minority character is whitewashed, or when the “ethnic” features of a minority are used almost universally to portray bad guys, it is a political and social issue.  <b>When you never see yourselves as the people who play the hero or even see your people existing in a portrayal of a place where they should be, it is not benign.</b></p> </blockquote> <p>Reblogging again for these additions.</p> </blockquote> <p>I’m not Jewish, but I can imagine seeing yourself villanized again and again must wear on you so hard (like queer coded villains do on me). They’re picking out things that <i>could be</i> Jewish features or stereotypes and then saying that they are. </p> <p>“She’s greedy and evil” and so are pretty much all other Disney Villains. Ya know… gotta be evil to be a villain. Dr. Faciler, Gaston, The Evil Queen, Maleficent, Jafar, Scar… need I list more villains? Being evil and greedy =/= being jewish coded because evil and greedy are common traits of villains, <i>even within </i><br/></p> <p>“She has dark curly hair” so does Esmeralda and Moana. <br/></p> <p>“Hooked nose.” her nose isn’t even hooked. It’s flat, similar to Maleficent’s. Anytime someone’s head is bent or leaning forward, naturally, their nose will appear more hooked. that’s just anatomy. That happens to <i>everyone</i>. Hell, you can even see in the images <i>her nose isn’t hooked</i>. <br/></p> <p>If you can’t tell the difference between a Jewish caricature and Mother Gothel, then I think that’s a you problem. Stereotypes are not exclusive to one group. In fact, implying that is <i>even more racist and anti-semitic </i>than the character. </p> <p>Hell, in fact, prior to the 20th century, <i>red curly hair</i> was associated with Jewish people. So by that logic, Merida must be Jewish coded… but because she is <i>good</i> and looks like a Disney protag, she <i>can’t</i> be Jewish coded because she doesn’t have enough “Jewish stereotypes”. </p> <p>The stereotype of Jewish people being greedy originates from when Jewish people were legally restricted to being usurers… Which is where the stereotype comes from. However, even in Jewish religion and mythology, greed, as in any other religion, is often portrayed as a negative or bad trait. </p> <p>The irony is that they can only see Jewish stereotypes in <i>villainous characters</i> but can’t see any in the protagonists or heroes.</p> <figure data-orig-width="600" data-orig-height="400" class="tmblr-full"><img src="https://78.media.tumblr.com/5dab9038b1c45aa7d8afd2a14fd57fdd/tumblr_inline_pc3wmuk1ny1tx5uef_1280.png" alt="image" data-orig-width="600" data-orig-height="400"/></figure><p>Esmeralda (from Frollo’s perspective) is associated with sin and temptation… which is another Jewish stereotype (Beautiful Jewess / Belle Juive) and she has dark, curly hair (another Jewish stereotype). </p> <p>Merida has curly red hair, which was a Jewish stereotype before the 10th century. If we’re going this loosely based on stereotypes, you can even argue that Queen Eleanor is “Jewish-coded” because she is nagging, protective, and motherly. Ya know, the Jewish mother/wife stereotype. </p> <p>So you have two arguably Jewish-coded heroines and protags yet no one can see the Jewish stereotypes in them because they are <i>the good guys</i>. Or because they don’t have <i>certain</i> Jewish stereotypes.</p> <p>The thing is, stereotypes, are not all inherently bad, or rather, not all stereotypes are negative. Not all stereotypes originate from oppressors or people that are anti-semitic, racist, etc. Some stereotypes are often used as stock characters by people of a race or culture. Not every stereotype is exclusive to Jewish people either or even originates with anti-semitism. </p> <p>If you can <i>only</i> see yourself in villains then maybe it’s you rather than the creators or characters. If you reblogged the old version, could you please delete it and reblog this one instead.</p> </blockquote> <p>Spread this version so people recognize that this stuff harms all Jewish women. <br/></p> </blockquote> <p>omfg can y’all chill the fuck out, any race can be portrayed as hero or villain, it’s a fucking kids movie not a political statement</p> </blockquote> <p>So I’m guessing you’re white and a gentile. As such, you’ve more than likely grown up looking at tv and movies and fairytales and seeing your face in those of the heroes.</p> <p>Jewish people don’t get that.  When we are portrayed in live action, our characters are more often than not whitewashed and in other media, our features are used and caricaturized to create “evil looking” villains.</p> <p>You don’t see it because you’ve been ingrained with the idea that “ethnic” features are just “how you make a character look evil.”  You don’t look at Gothel and see your mother.  You don’t see yourself and your people.  You don’t see decades of propaganda aimed at fostering hate against you and ultimately seeking to destroy you.  </p> <p>But seeing how<a href="http://aworldinneedofmagic.tumblr.com/post/148709289078/drwhothefuckyouthinkyoutalkinto-gelopanda"> you also seem to think that saying you’re not attracted to <i>an entire race</i> of people ISN’T racist</a>, you really don’t get any say on any of this.</p> <p>So really, you need to chill the fuck out and stop telling marginalized people to stop talking about the tools of our own marginalization.</p> <p><b>Let’s play a game I like to call: <i>Movie Villain or Antisemitic Propaganda:</i></b></p> <figure data-orig-width="726" data-orig-height="446" class="tmblr-full"><img src="https://78.media.tumblr.com/ef40a021948f154c0b106784323660aa/tumblr_inline_oii52q367I1u3hfbm_540.png" alt="image" data-orig-width="726" data-orig-height="446"/></figure><p>Many “evil witch” tropes were built on European antisemitic stereotypes, not just in appearance but in the storylines they play out as well. Greediness, stealing children, killing children, hunger for power, etc.  <b>Every time a movie villain design uses stereotyped Jewish features to communicate “evilness” to an audience, they perpetuate the marginalization of the people they are using. </b></p> <p>One big issue I have is that Gothel’s didn’t start out as the antisemitic caricature that made it to screen.  Much of the early concept art has a more dark romanticism feel.  </p> <figure data-orig-width="750" data-orig-height="453" class="tmblr-full"><img src="https://78.media.tumblr.com/6a26a0b8632d40346b1b4541b6829f02/tumblr_inline_oii6kjyfLA1u3hfbm_540.jpg" alt="image" data-orig-width="750" data-orig-height="453"/></figure><figure data-orig-width="750" data-orig-height="453" class="tmblr-full"><img src="https://78.media.tumblr.com/ad784bf14cf3600fc783cb3f6b9f0c70/tumblr_inline_oii6kjtoI61u3hfbm_540.jpg" alt="image" data-orig-width="750" data-orig-height="453"/></figure><figure data-orig-width="1100" data-orig-height="741" class="tmblr-full"><img src="https://78.media.tumblr.com/8163c91a59863a27fef98dcb16bd8782/tumblr_inline_oii6kk5zKZ1u3hfbm_540.jpg" alt="image" data-orig-width="1100" data-orig-height="741"/></figure><p>They changed the original design. Presumably to make Gothel more “other” from the good characters in the movie. <b> At some point, a decision was made that dark curly hair and a hooked nose wound better convey their villain.</b></p> <p>It really doesn’t matter if any of this was intentional, I’d actually bet that it wasn’t.  However, antisemitic tropes are so engrained in our societies that people like you, even when confronted with a step by step break down of what it is, feel comfortable thinking that there’s nothing wrong with it and mocking those calling it out as if we are overreacting.</p> <p>You seem to have completely ignored the majority of my post.  It is the character design, plus the characterization, plus the story line that mirrors blood libel that makes Gothel an antisemitic character. <b> It’s not just about someone of a certain race or ethnicity being a villain.  It’s about how stereotypes of a certain ethnic group are understood as “villainous” due to villains being repeatedly coded as Jewish over decades of film and tv.</b></p> <p>And contrary to your naive belief, all media is political to some extent. The stereotypes are so insidious, I didn’t even realize she was Jewish coded until I saw this post for the first time, and since then I’ve been able to pick up on more anti-semitic media.</p> <p>Stay cognizant! </p> </blockquote> <p>This is a writing blog so fellow writers! Please take a good look at your villains— even if they’re not Jewish, it can be antisemitic. Thanks. - A Jew™️</p> </blockquote> <p>I have a feeling this is all baseless, and groundless. If you’re assuming a character has to be a negative Jewish stereotype because you stereotype those features as bein Jewish. The one with the issue might be you</p> </blockquote> <p>Mother Gothel has a similar facial structure as Cruella De Vil. You literally picked the bare minimum and made a mountain out of an ant hill.</p> </blockquote> <p>Maybe it’s me, but isn’t that shape of nose called the ROMAN nose? The propaganda ones seem a lot fatter and bulbous to me.</p> </blockquote> <p><i>&gt; They changed the original design. Presumably to make Gothel more “other” from the good characters in the movie. </i></p><p>Why, yes, the child kidnapper and abuser villain whose entire character motivation is based on <b>being different</b> is designed not to look like regular people, especially her “daughter”. Even her clothes are deliberately anachronistic.</p></blockquote> <p>This entire post has been quite a ride.</p>

Black History Facts: Esther Jones blogged by @Msjennyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Did you know, Betty Boop was inspired by a black woman? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The legendary cartoon character was inspired by Esther Jones, otherwise known as “Baby Esther”, an African-American singer and entertainer, best known for her “baby style” singing. She performed at the Cotton Club in Harlem, regularly in the 1920s. Her trademark vocal style, using “boops” and other jazzy scats and sounds caught the attention of actress Helen Kane. After that, Kane began using similar “boops” in her songs, including the “baby style” singing as well. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ten years later, cartoonist Max Fleischer introduced a caricature of the jazz age flapper, which then became the first and most famous sex symbol in animation. However, Kane immediately tried to sue Fleischer and Paramount Publix Corporation, saying that they used her image and style. In turn, video evidence of Baby Esther, provided by Fleischer, showed that the style pre-dated Kane, which lead to a ruling against her.
