And that support crosses political divides, according to the results of an exclusive new NPR/Ipsos poll: Whether they have children or not, two-thirds of Republicans and 9 in 10 Democrats agree that the subject needs to be taught in school. A separate poll of teachers found that they are even more supportive, in theory — 86% agree that climate change should be taught. These polls are among the first to gauge public and teacher opinion on how climate change should be taught to the generation that in the coming years will face its intensifying consequences: children. And yet, as millions of students around the globe participate in Earth Day events on Monday, our poll also found a disconnect. Although most states have classroom standards that at least mention human-caused climate change, most teachers aren’t actually talking about climate change in their classrooms. And fewer than half of parents have discussed the issue with their children. Apparently, Head, and Parents: epochayur people that can swim underwater in chlorine pools with their eyes open are not to be trusted oonabashed This is true. I once did this to cheat at a pool game, and a kid in goggles saw me do it He wanted to know how, so l told him I was part mermaid. He wanted to call bullshit, but I was like, look kid, I can prove t, but you're not allowed to tell anyone under 18. He said what about his mom, I said, sure, but she won't believe you, so it didn't matter if he ratted on me to an adult. He was skeptical but agreed. For the next ten minutes I executed any number of water related feats-I've been swimming since I was 3 and was on the swimming and diving team in high school I crossed the entire span of the pool underwater without taking a breath. I sat on the bottom of the pool for a minute. I lifted him over my head while only treading water. I floated face down without moving for a convincing stretch of time. I did a pretty choice inward pike off the diving board. This was what really convinced him. He'd seen a dolphin show once, apparently, and thought it was pretty comparable So yeah. This kid was straight up convinced I was a mermaid and was losing his shit and trying to figure out how to get around his promise He went over to the hottub to tell all the parents and they all like, smiled and laughed and nodded. He could tell they didn't believe him. He came back and was like You were right about adults." Yeah kid, I know" "Well but, you're the most important discovery I've ever made! I gotta tell someonel" Well. You need to establish some credibility first, I told him. "You have to prove to people that you're a serious scientific thinker, and then when you say stuff like this, they might believe you. He thought about this for a second. "But what if you just showed them?" and I said it was against half memaid rules to show adults anything that could make them suspicious. He took this seriously He spent the rest of his time in the pool following me around. I taught him how to hold his breath underwater without plugging his nose and how to do a backstroke I'm still proud of this, and regret nothing o marky-mark-quack-quack-quack 698,054 notes 14 Times People On Tumblr Told Really Great Stories

Animals, Clock, and England: T-Mobile LTE 6:43 PM 86%( -+ Wolf Nanaki @wolfnanaki Short version: scientist discovers that killing wolves disrupts wolf pack structure, leading to more livestock deaths, and therefore killing wolves doesn't work. He's since been sent countless death threats and has lost his credibility and reputation. The New York Times·@nytimes Rob Wielgus, one of America's pre-eminent experts on large carnivores, had no idea how unpopular he could get until he began to study wolves. His academic reputation is now in shreds. nyti.ms/2KCLSGA 7/7/18, 1:12 PM View Tweet activity 984 Retweets 1,478 Likes Wolf Nanaki @wolfnanaki 5h For the record, farmers and hunter:s who know nothing about how the environment works outside the animals they profit from is absolutely nothing new. It's why wolves almost went extinct in the first place. They wanted that "hunter's paradise". 129 247 Wolf Nanaki @wolfnanaki 5h It was believed that if you got rid of all the predator animals, then the livestock and prey animals could thrive. Turns out instead, the prey animals overpopulate, destroy their environment, and become less healthy overall. Wolf Nanaki @wolfnanaki 5h This is why Yellowstone brought wolves back, for the record. Even then, people were furious at the notion and tried to stop it. But turns out wolves kept the numbers of the other animals in check, and the environment became healthy again. 3 24 257 Wolf Nanaki @wolfnanaki 5h In spite of this, people still care more about their short term personal profits than the long-term damage of their actions, and still want wolves removed. No wonder the Republicans in this article compare wolves to Democrats. wolfnanaki: So one of my tweets kinda blew up. :v We learnt about this in the biology part of our gcse combined science course (you usually have to take gcse science in england). The basics of it is that predators need prey for food, and prey need predators for population control, meaning if the population of either one drops, the population of the other will have a corresponding reaction. Prey population drops - predator population drops - prey population rises - predator population rises - prey population dropsAnd so on.So, when an outside force (disease, humans) interferes, it interrupts the cycle. Imagine if you saw the inside of a clock and went why are there so many cogs? and just started taking them out. The clock wouldnt work. It is the same with any ecosystem. Now imagine if we were in the place of the wolves. We hunt prey and the cycle goes and everything is fine and balanced, but then someone is like no i want more prey and just kill us. The prey population goes up and this is when our (the predators) population would go up. But were being killed off. So prey just keep going up and up and up and the ecosystem goes all out of wack. Their food sourcr decreases, they starve, they die. But there is no external cause so it just keeps happening. Now there isnt any predators or prey. No ecosystem. Everythings dead. Well done.

(link to comic) Sorry this one’s a little late. Trans people have to walk this really fine line with respect to acceptable gender expression. Deviating from what is considered ‘normal’ for their gender results in the credibility of that gender being called into question in ways that just don’t happen with cis people. (while this happens with all trans people,  I’m going to focus on trans women for this post) The truth is, while feminism is making awesome inroads in creating space for women to adopt a range of gender expressions beyond what social norms of ‘women’ have prescribed, so often that only applies to cis women. Trans women who ‘break’ femininity are regarded as essentially  'letting slip’ their ‘actual gender’. This is a symptom of the fact that trans people are largely still considered to be ‘acting like ’ their gender - ‘acting’ being the operative term. People see their gender as being something that sits upon a deeper truth - some less genuine, something deceptive. There’s another side to this, of course, for trans women who adopt non-transgressive expressions of femininity - they’re accused (often within the feminist community) of reinforcing stereotypes, damaging the image of women. So there’s really no way to win. Trans women who conform too much are essentially accused of being in bad drag, trans women who don’t conform enough are accused of a lack of commitment to their gender. That great work we do, where we’re troubling what gender norms are, challenging sexist ideals, and taking control of our bodies? We need to make sure that we’re opening up those opportunities for ALL women. And we need to make that space available for all other genders, as well. I don’t believe in feminism that opens doors to some people while locking them for others.

Memes, Snoop, and Snoop Dogg: Snoop Dogg's Cannabis Firm Raises $45 Million For Investments In Weed Industry @balleralert APE Snoop Dogg’s Cannabis Firm Raises $45 Million For Investments In Weed Industry - blogged by @MsJennyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ SnoopDogg has locked down $45 million to invest into cannabis startups. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Back in 2015, the legendary rapper and weed connoisseur co-founded an ancillary cannabis industry venture firm to invest in the business. However, Snoop’s Casa Verde Capital is not investing in the dispensaries or the actual weed growing process, but into the picks and shovels used for the process, the Grio reports. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now, with the new $45 million fund, which is reportedly the largest in the industry, Snoop is reportedly ready to invest no less than $1 million in each company. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Our biggest investment to date is LeafLink, a marketplace for retailers and brands,” his managing partner Karan Wadhera said. “If you were Walmart and logging onto a platform to order from vendors, that’s what LeafLink has created for the cannabis space. A dispensary can log in and order from vendors on one consolidated platform.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As for Snoop’s involvement though, Wadhera says the rapper is all about their lifestyle media website. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “That’s content. That’s media. That’s Snoop’s bread and butter,” Wadhera said. “He mainly handles the financial modeling. He’s among the most important cultural figures in this industry, which is incredibly important. His involvement lends a lot of credibility and excitement to our portfolio companies. He’s also there for input whenever we need it.”
