Think about it: you're a 20 something post grad with a degree you can't use. You go work at Chipotle every day, maybe get to go out once on weekends, maybe got an SO. Yes, this is perhaps enough to sustain you, but it isn't enough to engage. People need things to work on, things to get better at, to grow with and to strive for. You don't get this from basic labor in a modern context because mechanical efficiency has led to all this jobs become absurdly repetitive and simple. You come home one day, pissed about everything, how your life is going no where, how you have nothing you feel you can even engage with on your spare time because you're to worn out. Then a rich white dude who has been fortunate enough to make money that allows him to pursue higher-concept pursuits (like grand social change) interrupts your Reddit browsing to tell you that Trump is bad Like, yes, a lot of people may agree or disagree, and that'll give them a reason to engage with it. But most people? Trump no trump, whatever. Who the fuck gives this guy the right to Lord himself over me just because he's an actor? How come he gets to set up a high profile event that the entire world sees, and I might get fired if I eat one to many poppy seed bagels before a drug test? Where's the fucking justice? So these people make their own justice, but in today's world where any attempt to actually change your own life is assaulted by those who want to extract any amount of extra value they can from your labor, nobodies got time to seek justice when they need to be working. God knows nobody wants to research voting laws and salary-brackets during their only fucking down time. But you know what somebody can do during their down time that is both novile, diverting, and gives a semblance of a feeling of agency over your life?
