Church, Fire, and Internet: DISORDERLY Oct. 1 - A group of students playing hide and seek in the Harris Fine Arts Center at 11 p.m. caused a faculty member to call the University Police. The police arrived but were not able to find any of the students. deadmomjokes: owl-librarian: #you just made it a higher stakes game of hide and seek Having gone to this University, and having personally played hide and seek in the Harris Fine Arts Center, I guarantee you that NOBODY finds hiders unless they, too, are familiar with the bowels of the HFAC. Once you get down to the practice-room levels, time stops completely and you could walk up the back stair and end up in 1967. The halls change at least 8 times an hour, there’s no way you’re getting back out the same way you came in. When the lights start going off at 10 the whole bottom 3 floors descend into some subsection of the fey realm. I once hid up on the balcony stage access fire-escape thing of a lower-level theater, and 3 faculty walked by under me and not a one of them noticed the hulking, wheezing asthmatic lurking above them, half dangling off a rickety metal ladder that probably wasn’t supposed to be climbed. A fellow hider friend came and found me, and we sat up there for 30 minutes listening to some distant clicking sound before we realized nobody was actually going to find us. We had no cell service, and no internet to reach anyone. We got lost trying to get back out, and once we resurfaced, everyone else was gone, the building was empty, and we just went home to eat ice cream. Nobody knew where we had disappeared to, and nobody bothered to check if we were there before leaving. For all I know, they just assumed we had been lost to the gaping maw of the HFAC basement and when they saw us at church on Sunday it was probably like they’d seen a ghost. None of us ever mentioned it again. Basically what I’m saying is Campus Police had no hope of finding them in the first place and probably lost an officer or two if they actually conducted a real search, because nobody except Senior art majors or veteran custodians actually knows how to navigate that building and make it out in the same dimension they entered from. Not at 11pm anyway.

Apparently, Dad, and Friends: boyduroy My dad told me a story recently about how he was in Boy Scouts or something and they went on a hike and were each given a rifle and one single bullet to practice shooting with (idk, it was the 70s or whatever). One of his friends, whom l'll refer to as Steel Balls for reasons that will soon become clear beckons my dad to a part of the woods and points to a giant hornets nest up in a tree. SB announces that he's going to shoot it, waits for my dad to take cover (as one should in this situation), and fires off his only round into the nest Sure enough, a swarm of pissed off hornets descend upon SB, who stands stoically and perfectly still at the base of the tree. Dad maintains that, despite their buzzing right around him, none of the hornets stung his friend, and they soon calmed down and returned to their newly renovated nest. SB turns back to face my dad and imparts this chunk of wisdom. That's the secret to dealing with hornets, Jim. They don't know humans make rifle shots, they don't know where the noise came from. You gotta stand still and don't move, and they won't chase you. For being this so called “True American” the degree of contempt you have for us is staggering. America is historically made up  of legal immigrants. All the way up until the 1900’s people were still migrating here for a better future, especially during  the World Wars. You can’t just say you have to descend from the British colonies to be a “true” American. There are plenty of legal immigrants that love this country more than to 10th gen people who were born here. southernnationalist? Oh wow. To be fair, though, the lady in the original post seems like she actually came here and fully embraced America rather than trying to make it like China. She’s one of the ones who did it the right way. I don’t disagree. I’m not crazy about the idea of people who weren’t born here holding federal office, but it is what it is. Fact of the matter is, we hear endlessly about how immigrants built America, and that’s true. What people seem to leave out, conveniently enough, is that the vast majority of those immigrants were from western Europe. True enough, hundreds of thousands of Chinese laborers  helped build California and the railroads. But America’s industrial super strength was built on the backs of European immigrants who were treated only marginally better than ethnic immigrants. And this is used to excuse endless immigration from South America, Mexico, the M.E., Asia, etc - all places where immigration to the US should be heavily controlled from so those who come have time to assimilate to OUR culture, language and customs - otherwise we get what we’re seeing now: people protesting an American running for an American office…….. with the fucking flag of Mexico in hand. Because they don’t like America, they don’t want to live in America, they want to live in North Mexico. No different than the muslims who come here en masse and demand to have their own sharia courts, they don’t want to live in America, they want to live in the American Islamic Emirates.  Wow conservative discourse is such garbage

Despite the oppression faced by the Choctaws in the years preceding the famine, on hearing of the plight and hunger of the Irish people in 1847, they raised $170 to send to the Irish people and ease their suffering. This figure is equivalent to tens of thousands of dollars in today’s currency. The sculpture, consisting of nine giant, stainless steel eagle feathers, is currently being completed by Cork sculptor Alex Pentek. Speaking to the Irish Examiner, Pentek says, “I wanted to show the courage, fragility and humanity that they displayed in my work.” Read more Webofgoodnews.com Okay, so I saw $170 and I thought that is was a cute but largely symbolic gesture of kindness but then i actually looked up the inflation from 1847 and it turns out that it is over $71 THOUSAND in today’s money, raised by a people who themselves were enduring economic oppression. As a descendant of Irish immigrants, I can’t tell you how much reverence and respect I have for the Choctaw people. And as an Irish person, born and bred, I cannot express how deeply touched and overwhelmed with gratitude and respect I have for the Choctaw people, and in general, the Native American people. Truly a beautiful gesture during a very difficult time for us in history. It’s nice to be reminded of good deeds that humanity is capable of carrying out. I’m very happy that my country created and dedicated this work of art to them. A very overdue ‘Thank You’ that will hopefully remain for all time.
