Bad, Bored, and Children: St. Louis day care accused of running a toddler 'Fight Club' 😮😮😳 A day care center in St. Louis encouraged toddlers to viciously brawl with each other in a "fight club," according to a lawsuit from the mother of one of the children and video of the incident that was released Wednesday. Nicole Merseal said her then-4-year-old son, and another child were instructed by teachers Mikayla Guliford and Tena Dailey, to punch and hit each other at the Adventure Learning Center in December, 2016, according to the suit filed earlier this year. Merseal, of St. Charles, Missouri, accused the day care in court documents of permitting another child "to intimidate and harm" her son while directing a "fight club." The video shows Merseal’s youngest son and another boy wearing Incredible Hulk toy fists and punching each other while a teacher looks on. One of Merseal's sons recorded the episode on his iPad and sent it to her. She then called the police and had them visit the day care and interview the director and staff. Her children were also questioned by investigators. In documents released by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Jennifer Scott, the director of the center, said that when she confronted Guliford about the incident, she said the children "were bored" and that "we ran out of things to do." Scott fired Guliford and Dailey and contacted the Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline, according to the health department. Guliford admitted to having the children fight, according to state documents. She said she took the children to the lower floor of the building because of a broken heating system on the other floors. "I meant for the fighting with the Hulk Hands to be a stress release exercise," she said. "It did not last more than three or four minutes." Guliford said no children were hurt in the incident but "it was still a bad judgment call on my part." But the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute the teachers.

Dad, Family, and Fire: Meghan McCain @MeghanMcCain I love you forever - my beloved father @SenJohnMcCain My father, United States Senator John Sidney McCain III, departed this life today. I was with my father at his end, as he was with me at my beginning. In the thirty-three years we shared together, he raised me, taught me, corrected me, comforted me, encouraged me, and supported me in all things. He loved me, and I loved him. He taught me how to live. His love and his care, ever present, always unfailing, took me from a girl to a woman- and he showed me what it is to be a man All that I am is thanks to him. Now that he is gone, the task of my lifetime is to live up to his example, his expectations, and his love. My father's passing comes with sorrow and grief for me, for my mother, for my brothers, and for my sisters. He was a great fire who burned bright, and we lived in his light and warmth for so very long. We know that his flame lives on, in each of us. The days and years to come will not be the same without my dad-but they will be good days, filled with life and love, because of the example he lived for us. Your prayers, for his soul and for our family, are sincerely appreciated. My father is gone, and I miss him as only an adoring daughter can. But in this loss, and in this sorrow,I take comfort in this: John McCain, hero of the republic and to his little girl, wakes today to something more glorious than anything on this earth. Today the warrior enters his true and eternal life, greeted by those who have gone before him, rising to meet the Author of All Things: "The dream is ended: this is the morning. Earlier, Meghan McCain tweeted about the passing of her father, Sen. John McCain.

Friends, Future, and Love: An Open Letter from the Cast of "Guardians of the Galaxy To our fans and friends: We fully support James Gunn. We were all shocked by his abrupt firing last week and have intentionally waited these ten days to respond in order to think, pray, listen and discuss. In that time, we've been encouraged by the outpouring of support from fans and members of the media who wish to see James reinstated as director of Volume 3 as well as discouraged by those so easily duped into believing the many outlandish conspiracy theories surrounding him Being in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies has been a great honor in each of our lives. We cannot let this moment pass without expressing our love, support, and gratitude for James. We are not here to defend his jokes of many years ago but rather to share our experience having spent many years together on set making Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2. The character he has shown in the wake of his firing is consistent with the man he was every day on set, and his apology, now and from years ago when first addressing these remarks, we believe is from the heart, a heart we all know, trust, and love. In casting each of us to help him tell the story of misfit:s who find redemption, he changed our lives forever. We believe the theme of redemption has never been more relevant than novw. Each of us looks forward to working with our friend James again in the future. His story isn't over not by a long shot. There is little due process in the court of public opinion. James is likely not the last good person to be put on trial. Given the growing political divide in this country, it's safe to say instances like this will continue, although we hope Americans from acros:s the political spectrum can ease up on the character assassinations and stop weaponizing mob mentality It is our hope that what has transpired can serve as an example for all of us to realize the enormous responsibility we have to ourselves and to each other regarding the use of our written words when we etch them in digital stone; that we as a society may learn from this experience and in the future will think twice before we decide what we want to express; and in so learning perhaps can harness this capability to help and heal instead of hurting each other. I agree. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a party, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. (they offered to call ambulance)

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid’s husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00pm , Ingrid passed away.)
She had suffered a stroke at the party . Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today.

Some don’t die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this…

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke…totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Remember the ‘3’ steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster.
The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions :

S * Ask the individual to SMILE ..
T * = TALK. Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (eg ‘It is sunny out today’).
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS .

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call the ambulance and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

NOTE : Another ‘sign’ of a stroke is
1. Ask the person to ‘stick’ out their tongue.
2. If the tongue is ‘crooked’, if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.

A prominent cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

And it could be your own.

First reblog post that actually saves a life.

This is a life-saving post.

the more you know

yeah don’t think that this can’t happen to you or someone you know if they’re young. my cousin’s wife is 33 and she had a stroke last year

I’ve had a stroke. Africa, America, and Blessed:
Black artist history day 25: American poet Phillis Wheatley.

Phillis Wheatley was born in The mid-1700s in West Africa and kidnapped to be sold into slavery when she was about seven or eight. She was bought by the Wheatley family of Boston and, unlike many slaves, was actually taught by her masters to read and write, even providing her scholarship in Greek and Latin classics. She received unprecedented classical education for a girl of any race and certainly for an enslaved person. The Wheatley’s encouraged her to pursue poetry when they saw her talent, and she wrote her first poem at age 14.

Her poetry often had religious themes and wrote on a few political topics, including writing King George III a letter praising him for repealing the stamp act. He was a fan of hers, along with George Washington, who invited her to meet with him at his Massachusetts headquarters. Her work was also noticed and re-published by Thomas Paine.

Her work became popular in both England and the colonies. She became the first published African-American female poet and was eventually emancipated by the Wheatley family and married to a free black grocer. She had a complicated relationship with slavery, believing it to be overall cruel and in need of abolishment, but at the same time seeing it as a hidden blessing for her personally since she was blessed with kind masters and found Christianity through it. Her relationship with race and Faith is expressed in her poem “On being brought from Africa to America”

“Twas mercy brought me from my Pagan land,
Taught my benighted soul to understand
That there’s a God, that there’s a Saviour too:
Once I redemption neither sought nor knew.
Some view our sable race with scornful eye,
“Their colour is a diabolic dye.”
Remember, Christians, Negroes, black as Cain,
May be refin’d, and join th’ angelic train.”

Africa, Dancing, and Family: I am struggling to find the words to express my gratitude at this moment, but i will try Filmmaking is a team sport. And our team was made up amazing people from all over the world who believed in this story. Deep down we all hoped that people would come to see a flim about a fictional country on the continent of Africa, made up of a cast of people of African descent. Never in a million years did we imagine that you all would come out this strong, it still humbles me to think that people care enough to spend their money and time watching our film- But to see people of all backgrounds wearing clothing that celebrates their heritage, taking pictures next to our posters with their friends and family, and sometimes dancing in the lobbies of theaters often moved me and my wife to tears For the people who bought out theaters, who posted on social about how lit the film would be bragsed about our awesome cast, picked out outfits to wear, and who stood in line in theaters all over the world- all before even seeing the film.. To the press who wrote about the film for folks who hadn't yet seen it, and encouraged audiences to come out... ones, who came out with their parents, with their mentors, and with their And to the young friends.. Th ank you for giving our team of filmmakers the greatest gift: The opportunity to share this film, that we poured our hearts and souls into, with you. Sincerely. Ryan Coogler P.S. Animals, Belgium, and Black History Month:
Black history month date 13: sculptor Augusta Savage.

Augusta Savage was born near Jacksonville Florida on February 29, 1892 to a Baptist minister. She started her interest in sculpting when she was little, making small clay animals, however her father felt this violated the commandment not to create graven images and often punished her for it. Savage never gave up, and when she was in high school the principal encouraged her talent and allowed her to teach a clay modeling class. This began her lifelong commitment to teaching and art.

Savage was successful in her growing sculpting career and education, but was turned down from a French sponsored summer art program despite having the best qualifications due to her race. This sparked an ongoing interest in equal rights.

As knowledge of Savage’s talent and struggles became widespread in the African-American community, fund-raising parties were held in Harlem and Greenwich Village, and African-American women’s groups and teachers from Florida A&M all sent her money for studies abroad. Later, with assistance as from the Julius Rosenwald Fund, Savage enrolled and attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, a leading Paris art school. In Paris, she studied with the sculptor Charles Despiau. She exhibited and won awards in two Salons and one Exposition. She toured France, Belgium, and Germany, researching sculpture in cathedrals and museums.

Black History Month, Church, and Period: EDOM FROM WANT FREEDOM FROM
Black history month day 7: Sculptor Selma Hortense Burke.

Selma Burke was born in 1900 in Mooresville North Carolina. The 10th child of an AME church minister, she grew up attending a one room segregated schoolhouse and playing with the riverbed clay near her home. This was what first piqued her interest in sculpture. Her mother thought she should pursue a more financially stable career than one as an artist, but her grandmother was a painter and encouraged her interests.

Burke attended Winston-Salem University and graduated from St. Agnes Training School for Nurses in Raleigh in 1924. She moved to Harlem to become a private nurse, and it was there that she began a tumultuous relationship with Jamaican poet Claude McKay and was first exposed to the Harlem Renaissance.

Twice Burke traveled to Europe in the 1930s. Once on a Rosenwald fellowship to study sculpture in Vienna for a year, and once to study in Paris with Aristide Maillol. One of her most significant works from this period is “Frau Keller” (1937), a portrait of a German-Jewish woman in response to the rising Nazi threat which would convince Burke to leave Europe later that year.

We she returned to the United States, Burke enrolled at Columbia University, where she earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in 1941.

She is pictured here with two of her most famous pieces: A bust of Booker T. Washington, given to Frederick Douglass High School in Manhattan in 1936, and a relief sculpture of President Franklin D. Roosevelt that serves as the template for the American dime to this day.

America, Chicago, and Club: Former President Obama Talks Hitler's Rise in Warning to America; Encourages Citizens to "Pay Attention and Vote" @balleralert Former President Obama Talks Hitler’s Rise in Warning to America; Encourages Citizens to “Pay Attention and Vote” – blogged by @MsJennyb ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ America’s forever President BarackObama took the stage in Chicago earlier this week to discuss the current state of politics in America. Obama encouraged voters to stay devoted to democracy, warning of the rise of Nazism in the country. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “You have to tend to this garden of democracy, otherwise things can fall apart fairly quickly. And we’ve seen societies where that happens,” Obama said at the Economic Club of Chicago on Tuesday. “Now, presume there was a ballroom here in Vienna in the late 1920s or ‘30s that looked and seemed as if it, filled with the music and art and literature that was emerging, would continue into perpetuity. And then 60 million people died. An entire world was plunged into chaos. So you got to pay attention – and vote.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Despite the fact that Obama refused to mention Donald Trump by name, many believed the former president’s comments were in reference to the chaos Trump has caused throughout the country and abroad, with his divisive rhetoric. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Obama also touched on the importance of the free press, which has been attacked by Trump on a consistent basis. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “During my presidency, the press often drove me nuts,” he said. “There were times where I thought reporters were ill-informed. There were times where they didn’t actually get the story right. But what I understood was that principle of the free press was vital, and that, as President, part of my job was to make sure that that was maintained.”
