Put another CurlyW in the books! After suffering a tough loss in the ninth inning yesterday, the Nationals bounced back and beat the D-Backs 4-3! It's not easy to win on the road against another playoff-contending team, but the Nationals got the job done thanks to huge performances from Bryce Harper and Tanner Roark. Harper extended his hitting streak to a career-best 15 games in the first inning when he launched a towering home run off Anthony Banda, who was making his major-league debut. The ball was absolutely crushed, and landed above the pool in right-center field at an estimated 467 feet. Harper, who now sports a .338 BA with 25 HR and 75 RBI, has hit five homers in his last seven games coming out of the all star break. The hot-hitting D-Backs were quick to answer, though, and tied the game in the bottom of the first with a double off Roark. After giving up that run, no one could stop Roark. The man was on a mission, and retired nine straight batters with his killer slider and curveball. It wasn't until the sixth inning that the D-Backs scored another run off him, but he didn't seem fazed by it. Roark continued to dominate, and struck out the next batter to end the inning. He ended the night with a season-high 11 strikeouts - looking like the near-all-star we saw in 2016. The 30-year-old got off to a shaky start this year, but after Joe Ross went down, he's been making up for lost time. Roark got enough run support to pick up his 8th win, and once again, it was Harper leading the way. After Chris Heisey tripled in the top of the sixth, Harper brought him in with an RBI ground-rule double. Ryan Zimmerman then followed with a double of his own, and Anthony Rendon kept the line moving with an infield single to push the Nationals' lead to three. With Zim's double, he passed Tim Wallach for most in Expos-Nationals history. The middle of the order squandered an opportunity to take an even bigger lead in the seventh, when Harp and Zim struck out with the bases loaded. It almost came back to haunt us, but Ryan Madson worked around a one-out double and Sean Doolittle escaped a two-on, no-out jam to seal the victory and even up the series! CURLYW!!! The losing streak is over as the Nationals crush the Braves 10-5 on a beautiful Night OUT at the ballpark! It sure is nice to be on the winning side again, and we have Ryan Zimmerman to thank for that. The MVP frontrunner returned to the Nationals lineup in style and made up for lost time by hitting TWO home runs - a solo-shot in his first at-bat and a two-run homer in the sixth inning. He finished the day 3 for 4, raising his batting average to .372 and home run total to 19 - second best in baseball behind Aaron Judge, who has 22. With his two home runs tonight, Zimmerman ties Vladimir Guerrero as the Nationals-Expos franchise all-time home run leader (234) and is only three shy of breaking the Washington baseball record set by Senators legend Frank Howard. What we're witnessing from the face of the franchise is incredible, and he's now on pace to finish the season hitting above .350 with 48 HR and 132 RBI. So happy to see him have this kind of success. While Zimmerman was certainly the MVP again today, the Nationals got contributions from all around the lineup, as every batter reached base. Daniel Murphy collected three hits, and smacked a solo home run right after Zimmerman in the first inning. He's now hitting .345 with 11 HR and 43 RBI, on pace to finish just like last year. Over the last two games, the Nationals have scored 20 runs, and have looked much better from the batters box after getting swept by the Rangers. Even though Joe Ross gave up five runs and only lasted 5 2-3 innings, the increased offensive production and a solid night for the bullpen made this win possible. A combination of Trevor Gott, Enny Romero, Shawn Kelley, and Oliver Perez finished with a line of 3.1 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO. Kelley gave up two straight singles in the ninth inning before being saved by Perez, but besides that, the bullpen got the job done for the first time in three days. Well done.
