Africa, Facts, and Food: 12 African nations have come together pledging to build a 9 mile wide band of trees that will stretch all the way across Africa, 4750 miles, in order to stop the progressive advancement of the Sahara. Ultrafacts.tumblr.com fuck-sayer: thatlupa: jenniferrpovey: jumpingjacktrash: becausegoodheroesdeservekidneys: ultrafacts: Source For more facts follow Ultrafacts YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. Those are the countries. It will be drought-resistant species, mostly acacias. And this is a brilliant idea you have no idea oh my Christ This will create so many jobs and regenerate so many communities and aaaaaahhhhhhh more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Green_Wall it’s already happening, and already having positive effects. this is wonderful, why have i not heard of this before? i’m so happy! Oh yes, acacia trees. They fix nitrogen and improve soil quality. And, to make things fun, the species they’re using practices “reverse leaf phenology.” The trees go dormant in the rainy season and then grow their leaves again in the dry season. This means you can plant crops under the trees, in that nitrogen-rich soil, and the trees don’t compete for light because they don’t have any leaves on. And then in the dry season, you harvest the leaves and feed them to your cows. Crops grown under acacia trees have better yield than those grown without them. Considerably better. So, this isn’t just about stopping the advancement of the Sahara - it’s also about improving food security for the entire sub-Saharan belt and possibly reclaiming some of the desert as productive land. Of course, before the “green revolution,” the farmers knew to plant acacia trees - it’s a traditional practice that they were convinced to abandon in favor of “more reliable” artificial fertilizers (that caused soil degradation, soil erosion, etc). This is why you listen to the people who, you know, have lived with and on land for centuries. ^ The bold.

Being Alone, America, and Clothes: not the reason radfems want to destigmatize and appreciate periods because they're cute and fun and not gross at all. the actual reasonc girls are shamed for their periods, to the point where giris literally die in menetrual huts. periods are given as a reason women should not be leaders. tampons are taxed as a luxury. girls are taught to hide the fact that they get periods (hide pads tampons ke even right now in Britain girls from law- ncome farmilies are missing school because of their peniods: One pupil, who started her period aged , told BBC Radio Leeds that she had taped toilet roll to her underwear and missed school every m because she couldn't access 1wrapped a sock around my underwear just to stop the bleeding, because Ididn't want to get shouted at she said. lonce Sellotaped tissue to my underwear. I didn't know whet didn't gat any money because my mum was a single parent and she had five mouths to feed, so there wasnt much leftover money in the pot to be giving to us. Women in poverty here are using newspaper and old socks. Tina Leslie, who founded Freedom4Girls (a charity that provides sanitary protection in Kenrya) said accessing food banks, but not in schools. It's something you don't think about until somebody tells you. t is linked to poverty. In developing and hird world countries it's well-known that 60 per cent of women a access and they win five days of education, but it's not widely known that it's also an issue here in the UK. We knew it was happening, but nd girls domt have There were 25,000 visits to food banks in Leeds alone last yeer So if you're at cnisis point you go to a food bank and, like in Kenya, if you can't afford food you cant afford sanitary fwiw the population of Leeds is 750,000) In America a model was fired from Hyundai ast month for having her period She wasnt allowed to use the bathroom and conse quently sciled her clothes, then was asked to go home "because of her period situation according to her US Equal Employment he was being the hour, Rickert wanted to carry on working. She protested but was told to go Two days later, Seifred called Rickert and told her she was being fired "because Hyundai heard about Ms. Rickert having her menstrual cycle and they didn't want Ms. Rickert representing the company anymore according to the EEOC complaint The situation is much, much worse in much of the world. In Nepal: the practice of isolating women during theirp chhaupadi] exists a country in differing forms... In some places, women cannot be in their own h their can be in the house, but not in the kitchen and worship room. They are also forbidden from touching other people ( male members of the family or neighbours) or cattle and from growing fruit and vegetables. Women become untouchable. as in some partsl menstruating women are literally banished to a shed while they bleed Some of them die. Women subjected to chhaupadi are at risk of health problems, including pneumonia, suffocation, and sexual assault, during their menstruation. It is also blamed for prolonged depression, young women's deaths and high infant mortality rates. In urban India, 43% ofgirls use reusable cloth, yet they are often washed without soap or clean water Another study found that 88% of women in India use old fabric, their flow, because thery cannot access or afford commercial sanitary pads rags or sand to A study in Mukuru, Nairobi found that girls ages 10-19 reported having sex with older men to afford basic needs like sanitary pads. In another study, 73 peroent of interviewed Bangladeshi garment workers reported they miss work for an average of six days per month (resulting in unpaid work days) due to vaginal infections caused by unsanitary menstrual materials. This is a loss that few can afford, particularly those who live on les8 than two dollars a day. to UNICEF, 83 percent of girls in Burkina Faso and 77 percent in to change their sanitary menstrual 1.25 billion women don't menstruation!! D-WIDE We need to end period stigma and increase access to sanitary protection worldwide Dignity Period, Femme International, and Freedom4G ris all accept financial donations. Can't donate? Then keep talking 1 Menstruation Taboo
