memecucker: memecucker: ghdf i’m sorry i need to bitch to someone about this… i just find it incredible how this person flat out admits that they don’t think mainland chinese people have anything useful to say about how elements from their own culture are used. what do they even think culture is if it can be completely separated from the people who take part in shaping it? not to mention the false dichotomy between evil westerners who would only ever wear something that came from another country for FASHION AND MOCKERY and the mystical INSIDERS who are all perfect experts on the history of the garb and would only ever ‘wear it for cultural reasons’, whatever the vague cultural reasons cited here are. what about chinese people wearing the cheongsam for fashion? this is so exhausting now thats what i call some ethno-cultural nationalism “actually wear it for cultural reasons” does this person know what “culture” means lol This dress was invented in the 1920s. There are people still alive that predate it.  This is like that Futurama episode where the king or whatever of Zoidberg’s planet talks about a tradition of ritual combat thats 15 years old but theyre still gonna call it a tradition : Hi, I'm an actual Chinese person. Input from Chinese people from China is useless here, since China is...mostly Chinese people. If a white person wears a cheongsam, it's trendy or whatever. If a Chinese person wears a cheongsam to a formal event, they are almost definitely going to be scrutinised/exoticised/told to go back to their own country/etc. So until people that actually wear it for cultural reasons can do so without that kind of garbage in Western countries, l'd really rather not have outsiders do SO Like Reply 18m memecucker: memecucker: ghdf i’m sorry i need to bitch to someone about this… i just find it incredible how this person flat out admits that they don’t think mainland chinese people have anything useful to say about how elements from their own culture are used. what do they even think culture is if it can be completely separated from the people who take part in shaping it? not to mention the false dichotomy between evil westerners who would only ever wear something that came from another country for FASHION AND MOCKERY and the mystical INSIDERS who are all perfect experts on the history of the garb and would only ever ‘wear it for cultural reasons’, whatever the vague cultural reasons cited here are. what about chinese people wearing the cheongsam for fashion? this is so exhausting now thats what i call some ethno-cultural nationalism “actually wear it for cultural reasons” does this person know what “culture” means lol This dress was invented in the 1920s. "Not to get political, but something that we al gravitated toward in the writers room was making this character Muslim." "Representation is a really powerful thing," added Ashe. "When I was growing up watching television, I didn't see anyone who looked like me. When I think of the kid version of myself, I think it broadens your perspective. What I think is so lovely about this show is that the Legends are this tapestry that represent America today." According to Variety, Guggenheim said that DC's Legends of Tomorrow doesn't look to define a character by their race, religion, or sexual orientation but did so in this case following the election, in part due to the experiences of a family member who is Muslim "She was talking about how difficult it is to be a Muslim-American in the current political climate," said Guggenheim. "Having a character who's a computer hacker and is from the future but also happens to be Muslim, it's a nice, important aspect of her character." Guggenheim said that the usage of DC Comics' Isis was also done add more women to the cast. "There weren't enough women quite frankly," he said. "It's something we were looking to address." DC's Legends of Tomorrow is scheduled to return for its third season October 10 on the CW. A woman dressed in traditional Muslim clothing was set on fire by an attacker Saturday night in Midtown Manhattan, the New York Daily News reports. Her blouse caught fire, but she was able to put it out herself and is reportedly physically unharmed after the attack. The suspect allegedly lit the woman’s shirt on fire as she stood outside the Valentino store on Fifth Avenue shortly after 9 p.m., the Daily News reports, before walking away from the scene without speaking to her. The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is reportedly investigating the attack to determine if it was an anti-Muslim hate crime.
