Logic, Work, and Break: Guard 1:ONE OF US SPEAKS NOTHING BUT TRUTH Guard 2:THE OTHER NOTHING BUT LIES Wizard: ok, i know this, we have to ask... Barbarian: *takes ax and kills the first guard* Wizard: WHAT THE HELL Barbarian: *to remaining guard* is he dead Guard 2:NO barbarian: this one liar #dnd So this exchange seems to take place amidst an attempt to recreate the classic logic puzzle in which you must gain information by questioning two sources, one of which always responds truthfully while the other always responds falsely The thing is, in order for this puzzle to work, you have to have prior knowledge that this is how the sources will behave. In order to illustrate how monumentally butchered this puzzle becomes when you try to use the sources themselves to set up the puzzle, I will break it down The first and most obvious problem is that if you don't have prior knowledge about the sources then it is likely that they do not adhere to a strict policy for the truth value of everything they say, i,e, they are probably just regular people who sometimes lie and sometimes tell the truth The second problem is that if one or both of the sources do only speak truthfully or falsely, then making the statements that they do about their own truthfulness can easily have paradoxical consequences I have attempted to account for all of this in the following chart. This chart shows the results of the puzzle as either "paradox" or "?" because you are not going to get reliable information out of these guards. These results are based on whether each guard "T" always tells the truth, "F" always lies, or "S" sometimes says whatever he wants. You get the idea. Because English is a language that falls short of logical precision, I have included two possible interpretations of the dialogue and explored both. The first interpretation is probably how it ought to the words "one...the other," seem to give some grounds for the second interpretation. I have included the falsification of each statement under their respective interpretations for convenience. understood, but the use of 1st interpretation: G1: "At least one of us always tells the truth." G2: "At least one of us always tells lies." Then: G1 Falsification: "None of us always tells the truth." G2 Falsification: "None of us always tells lies." Guard 2 Truthfulness T Paradox Paradox IT Guard 1 Paradox Paradox ? Paradox Paradox 2nd interpretation: G1: "Exactly one of us always tells the truth." G2: "Exactly one of us always tells lies." Then: G1 Falsification: "It is not the case that exactly one of us always tells the truth." G2 Falsification: "It is not the case that exactly one of us always tells lies." Guard 2 Truthfulness T Paradox Paradox Guard 1 F Paradox Paradox Paradox So as we can see, it is impossible for guard 2 to tell the truth. So by killing guard 1 and hearing guard 2 tell a lie, the barbarian actually gained no information. Oh well, it's not like there was any information to be gained from this trainwreck in the first place. When they ask if you are using your philosophy degree...
