I will DIE WITH MY HONOR Gear =/= Jear Get =/= Jet Gift =/= Jift Give =/= Jive In English, words with a ‘G’ followed by an ‘e’ or an ‘i’ can be pronounced with either a hard ‘G’ or a soft ‘G’. Words with Germanic roots such as ‘gear’, ‘get’, ‘gift’, ‘give’ (see above) are pronounced with a hard ‘g’ while words with Latin or Greek roots such as ‘gem’, ‘general’, ‘giraffe’, ‘giant’, are pronounced with a soft ‘g’. So no, it’s not exactly a “general rule” that ‘g’ followed by an ‘e’ or an ‘i’ makes a soft ‘g’ sound.  Additionally, “GIF” is an ACRONYM starting with a word that begins with a hard ‘g’ sound, so “GIF” is therefore pronounced with a hard ‘g’. We fight with honor via @greenwoodthegreat. I could not have said it better, my friend. Thor agrees. This is a perfect compromise, it makes everyone unhappy. You know, I can’t argue with that. I don’t think anyone has ever mentioned them to me before and I’d really like to know. Oh, that’s what makes this a TRULY piping hot take. It’s that she, as commander, placed a civilian into combat, which is classified as a war crime because of press ganging and child soldiers, along with the whole general thing about exposing civilians to harm. Like, yeah, generally speaking, inflicting that on someone is a war crime. The trouble is, the civilian she placed in combat? Herself. This guy (and Human Pet Guy) are calling her a war criminal because they’re doing mental somersaults to consider her both a commander and a civilian. At the same time. Yeah. so we’re just stealing our discourse from fifteenth century france huh This blog is pro-Joan of Arc and any antis will be promptly blocked I’m just distracted by the idea of Joan of arc being a “waifu” : libertarirynn: scribblesteph: semituring: meganphntmgrl: spontaneous-purple-giraffe: fakefurby: hottest take Would someone please tell me which war crimes she committed? Why does EVERYTHING have to turn into a race thing? because white people have made sure that everything is about race as proved by the fact that when you say explorer, you think of a bunch of white guys walking the world and discovering it ~exotic wonders~ even though Zheng He travelled through Asia, to the Middle East, and even East Africa. But you’d likely never heard of him before. Same reason you never heard of Ahmad Ibn Fadlan, an Arab traveller who, as early as the 10th century, went to the Volga area for diplomatic reasons. He wrote about it, much as Marco Polo would do later for his own travels, and is one of our sources on what viking were like (and by all accounts, he wrote about them more accurately than western scholars of the same period did) Oh, or Ibn Battuta who travelled throughout Africa long before europeans did, and even went to Europe himself. And that’s just some example of Muslim medieval travel writers Everything is about race because white people keep telling everyone that their race is the only one who every got anything done. i have heard of precisely zero non-european explorers ever in my life, and that fucking sucks. this exhibit is amazing and i need to learn more. That boat is a frickin aircraft carrier comparatively. Holy crap. And no. Never heard a peep. Zhenghe went to over 40 countries in Asia and Africa and probably went even further, but I didn’t encounter that in history books before. He brought gifts from China to every country he went to and everyone loved him. It was just like “Hey, I’m here with a water-helicarrier and a gift,” and the kings of every country were lilke “holy shit son well here have a giraffe.” There are paintings depicting him leading a giraffe as well. Check him out guys, he’s really cool That is so awesome. Fuck western history.
