Appalled, Best Friend, and Butt: Out of Office - Business Travel Re: Melissa Benoist Alienating LGBT Fans of SupegirInbox x o whom it may concern, During the Supergirl cast's first day at San Diego Comic Con, your client Melissa Benoist exhibited some behavior that deeply upset a large portion of her LGBT fanbase as well as supporters of Supergirl in general. It is not my intention to defame Melissa or spew mindless hate; her words and actions today made a noticeable portion of her audience feel not only uncomfortable but also unwelcome as far as supporting her role as Kara on Supergirl Melissa openly, on a live video stream, participated in singing a song with Jeremy Jordan and other cast members that aggressively mocked the concept of Melissa's character having romantic feelings for Katie McGrath's character Lena Luthor. The relationship between these characters, named 'Supercorp' by Supergirl fans, was made an enormous joke by the star of this show. Melissa, Jeremy, and the other cast members at Comic Con were singing and yelling about how Kara Danvers and Lena Luthor would never be more than friends, shouting at the top of their lungs that those two female characters would never see each other in a romantic light in their whole lives. They danced and clapped about the incomprehensibility of a woman loving another woman, save for Katie McGrath and David Harewood who appeared uncomfortable in their already isolated positions behind the couch that the rest of the cast was situated on. The song celebrating how ridiculous the concept of female best friends eventually dating each other finally died down, and Jeremy Jordan said, "l think I'm going to get destroyed for what l just did. I debunked Supercorp." In response, Melissa Benoist said, "It was pretty brave. Is bravery making fun of girls of all ages who see themselves in the characters on a TV show that brands itself as feminist? Is bravery spitting in the faces of non-heterosexual women who find safety and enjoyment in the relationship between Kara and Lena? Is bravery yelling and singing to young girls who are unsure of their sexualities that there is no way someone could ever fall in love with their best friend and have it mean something besides being the butt of a joke? On behalf of LGBT women specifically, I am incredibly disappointed. Watching Melissa make fun of people who see a blossoming relationship between Kara and Lena was hurtful to the point that many are unsure of whether or not we can enjoy her show again. For someone who claims feminism and empowerment, Melissa let down a lot of supporters today by being passive and participatory in an act of disrespect and humiliation initiated by her castmates. Watching that video for the first time felt like a personal attack, like Melissa Benoist and the cast of Supergirl were standing around me on a stage and hurling insults to the tune of a song. I was appalled shocked, embarrassed, and hurt by what I saw Melissa do on Saturday. This email is not about 'shipping' or who I want to end up with who. It isn't about which characters I like more or what Kara's sexuality is. It is about how your client, who has exhibited awareness of the LGBT following of the show, blatantly made a mockery of non-heterosexual women during an interview and caused a large amount of Supergirl viewers to question our place in the fanbase seeing as the lead actor of our show turned romantic feelings between two women into a hurtful joke. She is a public figure who supposedly represents feminist ideals, and shouting her disapproval of women loving women on screen made many women and younger girls feel humiliated, disliked, and unsafe as far as remaining a part of Melissa's fanbase. As an actress myself, I absolutely feel honored when someone relates to a character l play or feels inspired by something I've done. Art is made to be interpreted by many, and as an actress Melissa has greatly disappointed Supergirl fans who interpreted her relationship with Lena as one full of love, admiration, and support. The message she sent with her behavior is one she needs to think about with emphasis on LGBT youth I am writing this because I want Melissa, who many young girls look up to, to know what her words and actions mean to marginalized people. I am incredibly glad that I am not a fifteen year old lesbian who watches Supergirl. I feel lucky that I have been judged for my sexuality in the past so that the first time I got made fun of wasn't by a celebrity that I look up to. If I were a young girl who had romantic feelings for her friend, I would feel completely and utterly shattered based on what I saw today. At 19 years old, I had yet to feel as singled out and invalidated by an actor before today In sending this, I don't expect or desire anything besides for your client, Melissa Benoist, to see how much this decision of hers has negatively affected members of her fanbase as well as fans of Supergirl in general
chloeniccole:

chloeniccole:

I absolutely emailed Melissaโ€™s publicity team, her agents, and her managers, buuuuut someone is in fact on vacation so at least one is out of the office until the 25th.ย

Even so, I sent it to a handful of others and Iโ€™m posting it because I want to do right by all of you.
