In fact, according to the NY Times, back in 2016, the country released a draft law that would criminalize racism, meaning hate speech cases would go to criminal courts instead of civil and would be punishable by up to 10 years in prison. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since then, the nation has moved to implement the new rules and subsequently make an example of a white South African woman. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to CNN, Vicki Momberg was found guilty in November for crimen injuria, better known as the willful injuring of someone’s dignity in her racist verbal attack on a black police officer. The incident was caught on camera and quickly went viral. Since then, Momberg has been prosecuted and sentenced to three years in prison with one year suspended sentence, as she becomes the first South African to be jailed for the offense. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “We’ve had crimen injuria (cases before), but they have always been coupled by other charges. This is the first for a prison sentence for crimen injuria on its own,” a spokesperson said of the sentencing. “We are pleased with the sentence. This sends a clear message to those who undermine other people’s rights.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the incident that led to the sentencing, Momberg was caught on video hurling racial slurs at South African police officers after they stopped to help her after her car was broken into in Johannesburg. According to reports, she repeatedly used words that were used to insult black people during the apartheid. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now, Momberg will have two years behind bars to think about her actions.

Well, the app we all love is apparently gearing up to get back to that. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s no secret that many of its users weren’t too fond of Instagram’s change in algorithm, which began back in 2016. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now, in a press release shared Thursday, the app announced plans to keep your feeds “more fresh,” ensuring that you don’t miss newer posts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Based on your feedback, we’re also making changes to ensure that newer posts are more likely to appear first in the feed,” the statement released to Instagram-press.com read. “With these changes, your feed will feel more fresh, and you won’t miss the moments you care about. However, the case was dropped after the girlfriend refused to press charges. As a result, Vasquez went on with his life with a career. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He eventually signed with Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, since the Astros’ minor league affiliate dropped him in the wake of the incident. He was also ordered to complete anger management as a form of probation. However, once the terms were complete, the case was formally dismissed on March 6. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now though, in the wake of the resurfacing of the surveillance footage from the incident, Vasquez has lost his job and has been reduced to a woman beater. (Well, at least that’s what his Wikipedia page says.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “There is no choice but to sever the relationship,” the team’s manager said in a statement. “Neither I nor the Barnstormers’ organization as a whole, can condone or associate with that behavior.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the video obtained by KRIS-TV, Vasquez is seen walking into the stairwell at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi with his girlfriend on Aug. 2. When the door closes behind him, he immediately slaps his girlfriend across the face. He then grabs her hair and drags her down the stairs before hitting her again. He then leaves and returns to hit her once more, making her fall to the ground.

I am going to have the neighborhood meet these hoodlums out here racing up and down the street,” Chad Copley said to the emergency operator. “It’s 1 in the morning. There’s some devil in them. They have firearms and we’re going to secure our neighborhood. If I was you, I would send PD out here as quickly as possible,” later adding, “I’m going to kill them.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After his conversation with the 911, Copley fired his gun and struck 20-year-old KourenRodneyBernardThomas. He then redialed 911 to explain the incident, claiming one of the boys brandished a gun. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, upon arrival, officials found an unarmed Thomas with a gunshot wound. He was quickly taken to a local hospital, where he was then pronounced dead. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Shortly after the incident, Thomas’ friend explained that their actions were innocent and completely opposite of Copley’s claims. In fact, David Walker said he and Thomas tried to get into a party on Copley’s block, but when they couldn’t get immediate access, they decided to leave. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While Walker’s story was slightly different from Copley’s, the end result was the same-Thomas was shot. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ During the trial, Copley, who the family attorney named ‘George Zimmerman 2.0’, maintained he fired in self-defense against the group of armed men. However, after a cross-examination, Copley admitted that he saw no gun and that there wasn’t even a neighborhood watch. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As a result, Copley was found guilty on first-degree murder charges and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Children, Family, and Friday: Jury Awards Korryn Gaines' Family $38 Million In Civil Case Against Baltimore County @balleralert MOR t ASSO Jury Awards Korryn Gaines' Family $38 Million In Civil Case Against Baltimore County - Blogged by: @RaquelHarrisTV ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A jury ruled on Friday the family of Korryn Gaines, the 23-year-old Baltimore mother who was fatally shot by a police officer in 2016, will receive $38 million. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Two years ago, Gaines became a victim of police brutality when officers entered her home on the morning of Aug. 1, 2016 attempting to arrest her on disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and multiple traffic violation charges. The mother originally refused to open the door, but police got a key from the landlord and walked in. They came in to find Gaines on the floor holding a shot gun along with her then 5-year-old son, Kodi. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The incident became a six-hour standoff between Gaines and police. Gaines who aimed her gun at officer Royce Ruby gave him the right to justly shooting the young mother. Ruby ended up killing Gaines and injuring her son. This Friday, an all female jury of six made a ruling after just three hours. They decided Kodi would be awarded $32.8 million, Gaines’ daughter, Karsyn Courtney, would be awarded $4.5 million, and her father and mother will each receive $300,000. The family was then awarded an additional $300,000. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After the three-week trial, the jury had came down to these deliberations: the first shot the officer had fired was not reasonable; they then distributed damages on the grounds that Baltimore County had violated the Gaines’ civil rights and had committed battery on the mother and son. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “This win is for all of my sisters in the movement who have lost their children to police violence,” Gaines’ mother, Rhanda Dormeus.

America, Donald Trump, and Philadelphia Eagles: No Players Knelt During The National Anthem at Super Bowl Lll @balleralert No Players Knelt During The National Anthem at Super Bowl LII- Blogged by: @RaquelHarrisTV ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sunday night, the majority of America tuned in for the Super Bowl. As P!nk started to sing her rendition of the national anthem, you may have noticed not one player kneeled. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The big game was held in Minneapolis and the opposing teams were the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you watched as the anthem was sung, Patriots stood with their hands over their hearts, as did the Eagles. Back in 2016, ColinKaepernick proudly set off the movement to kneel during the anthem to highlight and protest police brutality, oppression and the social injustices that have most recently plagued our country. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since then, many players have continued Kaepernick's protest, even in his absence. Despite the backlash from NFL sponsors, owners, and Donald Trump, the protests lasted throughout much of the season. However, during the biggest night in sports, players stood for the anthem, putting an end to the longstanding controversy- for now, at least. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ironically, before the game though, Trump released a statement calling for America to "proudly stand for the National Anthem." Trump also held a Super Bowl party in his West Palm Beach, Fla. golf course before flying back to Washington D.C. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Eagles beat the Patriots, 41-33.

A Dream, America, and Beautiful: Memphis Black Santa Brings Joy To Across The South People @balleralert Memphis Black Santa Brings Joy To People Across The South - Blogged by @tktrinidad ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Raymond Conley, 65, has been the resident black Santa for the past eight years at Southland Mall and people have been traveling to Memphis to see him. "Not to be funny, but they want to see a black Santa. They come from Texas, St. Louis, Atlanta. They want their kids to see a black Santa," Conley said. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ About 63% of the Memphis’ population is black, according to the U.S. Census and it’s pretty cool to see a Santa that is relatable to the population. The general manager Michael Rixter, of the Southland Mall, agrees, "we have at least 10 calls a day from people asking if we have Santa here. The second question they ask is, 'Is he black?” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There has been black Santa’s across America since the 1940’s. The Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn got its first black Santa in 2016 for four days, which expanded to nine days this year. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Believe it or not, before Conley donned on the Santa suit, Rev. Larry Lee Love Sr., 66 was the first black Santa in 1997, "Me and my wife were mall walkers. And they were putting up decorations, and advertising Santa, and we kept passing that big, beautiful red-and-white Santa chair with that white Santa, and every time we passed it, seemed like something would come over me." Love said. Back then, Love just worked for the mall, but these days everything is a business including being Santa. Conley works for Cherry Hill Photo Enterprises Inc which puts together the whole Santa experience. The company makes profits off of photo packages and sends Conley two spanking new suits every week. Conley is the only black Santa on their roster, local manager for Cherry Hill, Lyntia Howard, says,” We have a lot of people who come looking for him.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Conley and Love hope to continue being Santa for a very long time and Love has a dream on top of bringing joy to kids,"My only aspiration right now is to be the first black Santa to go to Washington, D.C., and light that 50-foot tall Alberta spruce tree( the National Tree by the White House)" he said.
